National Research Foundation (NRF)


The NRF is a department under the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) that sets the national direction for research and development (R&D). The NRF aims to:
Transform Singapore into a vibrant R&D hub that contributes towards a knowledge-intensive, innovative and entrepreneurial economy; and Make Singapore a talent magnet for scientific and innovation excellence.

A five-year budget of S$5 billion was allocated to the NRF in 2006 to achieve this mission.

A comprehensive series of programmes and support schemes to facilitate the flow of knowledge created through R&D in the lab to the marketplace. These programmes promote academic entrepreneurship in the institutes of higher learning and strengthen their links with industry.

FlightMedia - A Content Management System that enable users to upload the content to the server any time and any where with minimal professional help and cost. WitsVale - A web-based data management system created for teachers and students of the education industry in Singapore. Its database is managed by a proprietary adaptive learning engine. The comprehensive database serves as a repository of teaching materials for tutors and teachers to customise lessons for students.

Extra Chapter Challenge Programme

A competitive fellowship that gives PhD students the opportunity to explore the commercial feasibility of their thesis inventions/discoveries

PhD students interested in commercializing their technology may apply 6-9 months prior to completing their thesis paper Extra Chapter Challenge to commence after the submission of the thesis paper

Extra Chapter Challenge Programme


Up to S$19,200 grant (S$3,200 per month for up to 6 months) Fellows will develop a feasibility study or technology commercialisation plan for their invention. This constitutes the extra chapter to their dissertation. Fellows will be assigned an advisor/mentor who is knowledgeable in the technology commercialisation process. The learning process includes enrolling in relevant courses or workshops on innovation and entrepreneurship, meeting prospective customers, working with ILO officers to draft patent applications, file POC applications, etc.

Criteria for Selection
Made discoveries or findings in the course of their PhD dissertation/research that appear to have potential commercial or socially relevant applications Demonstrated entrepreneurial interest/passion to commercialize their research findings/invention Able to propose some initial ideas regarding the possible commercial applications of their research results and how their market feasibility can be explored

Invention / Developed user-friendly systems that aim to promote mobile Discovery haptic tangible interaction via remote communications. Potential Application A user friendly and cost-effective system for remote human-tohuman or human-to-animal haptic interaction.

Invention / Discovery Potential Application Discovered a new cell penetrating peptide and named it Tritin. Tritin possess many desirable properties not found in other cell penetrating peptides. Tritin is expected to be an important vector for oral drug delivery and topical drug delivery.
