Waste as a resource: Converting end-of-life plastics into diesel

Learn about SITA UKs fascinating work on converting end-of-life plastics into diesel. SITA UK is developing plants designed to convert approximately 6,000 tonnes of mixed waste plastic annually, specifically targeting mixed waste plastic diverted from landfill, and to produce in excess of four million litres of end of life plastic into specification diesel fuel. This session will provide an interactive forum for overcoming barriers to respond sustainably to emerging conditions. World Water Day 2012 Water and Food Security: Call for Solutions

Broadcast live from World Water Week in Stockholm, the much anticipated debate is likely to spark a lively session focused on the viability of water and food security solutions. Core topics to be covered are: innovation or traditional methods; intensification or greener agriculture; food import or self sufficiency; increasing food production; or reducing food waste and adopting sustainable diets. Speakers: FAO Rome, UNESCO, Stockholm Environmental Institute, Kings College London, International Council of Youth, Women for Water Partnership, SIWI, Value Chain Development, University of Nebraska, WWF, World Bank, GWP, and more Interest in market-based approaches to solving development challenges continues to grow. Yet while smaller, local entrepreneurs are fairly commonplace, workable modus operandi for engaging them in sanitation up-scaling and service improvement are still being sought. Which Water Quality for Which Uses? A Regulators' and Practitioners' Perspective

How can water quality standards and guidelines protect water resources for multiple ecosystem services, and water uses? Join this session, broadcast live from World Water Week in Stockholm. Key policy-makers, regulators, researchers from around the world will discuss the development of international water use guidelines, drawing on the results of the UNEP-UNESCO study on international water quality standards/guidelines for ecosystems. Speakers: United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UNESCO, World Health Organisation (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), French National Committee of International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) & French Chapter of the International Water Association (ASTEE) Clean, high-quality water is the essential ingredient for all beverage products. Accordingly, beverage companies continually focus on water use avoidance and conservation to ensure this resource is managed responsibly. Laura Nelson will describe how BIER (the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable) undertakes an annual quantitative benchmarking study to evaluate water use and efficiency in the beverage industry. This research provides insight into water use efficiency drivers and demonstrates improvement as an industry sector in water stewardship efforts.
