Dear Sir, I am K.

Vikram Reddy, and interested to start Goat Farming in Warangal Dist, can you please assist me with the following details: 1. Area required 2. Number of goats to start with 3. Meat goat or other goats 4. Costing 5. Feeding etc Regards K. Vikram Reddy 9849484245, 9848310843 Vickram296@gmail.com [Jan 7, 2011 10:41:26 AM] You may go through following points1)Quality animals:- Animals which can sustain in perticular climatic conditions & having proper breed character needed for goatary business.Eg- According to geographical situations, anima accustoms with environment & give production. From these animals ,selection of good quality animals. 2)Management- As the production of animal is increases according to high quality animals demand for good quality fodder, concentrate, water, housing and care is needed more .If this is not fulfilled ,then goat owner can have a loss in terms of less meat production as well as economic losses. So it is necessary for goat owner to access his strength for providing this kind of facilities for its animals. So for that if goat owner has good kind of knowledge (By training & practice)and will to do whatever work in his goat farm, then he can be profitable goat farmer. As per my knowledge this is 24 hours business & it can not be as supervisor's job. 3)Facilities:- Whatever facilities required for dairy like availability of farm land, availability of fodder throughout the year, availability of veterinarian, skill for first aid treatment, skill for feed formulation is important for goat farmer.Goat owner must provide minimum kind of facilities which are needed for his animals. 4)Market- Before producing meat or other goat product,it is better to search what are market opprtunities in your area.See if there is no any goat farm functioning in your area what are the resions behind it?If there is no any farmer who dare to take this entreprice then it is opportunity to you set up good quality of goat farm.If market is not there ,try to create your own market by creating demand for your product in the market. 5)Value addition- In business of goat farming,it is better to not to rely on only one

entreprise or product eg- meat,If you do value addition in kid for weight gin in short time or good male kids for breeding purpose etc.,You will get more money,If you do value addition in goat dung by preparing vermicompost you will get more money . So think on this aspect, Do personal visits for survey the area, try to find out market as well as study market chains developed in that perticular area. Then make decision for dairy farming . 6)To be updated- For goatowner it is necessary to aware about new practices & changes in goat farming. So for that he must take training before starting the goat or any animals related enterprise & after that timely necessary trainings to become updated .New practices, trends & changes in management will be helpfult to reduce the losses & improve production of animals. He must be adaptive & positive in nature & willing to take responcibilities or change as & when needed. 7) Keep records- Some farmers which do not have land but are successfully run their business because they keep records for feed,fodder,Meat/Milk production,Reproduction, health & management aspects. In which they can get ideas as well as point our problematic points or situatuation to avoid losses.Today, many goat farmers are not keeping records as like businessman,so they do know what is the status of the goatary they are running now. On the above points, you may decide number of animals to be kept for goat farming which can run sucessfully. Also visit to nearest goat farms which are running their farms very well & then share the ideas with them for runing successful goat farm. Please see following link for getting more details:Dear Vikram Reddy, Regarding Shed & Goats 1)The area for the shed can be as follows (i.e. - 4200Sq ft inside the Shed for protecting against Robbers in Night, bad weather+ 8400 Sq ft outside, this you can use for feeding the Goats in hay racks, water and relaxing) 2)Inside shed- 14 Sqft / Goat 3)Outside space- 28 Sqft / Goat 4)The information is for 300 goats but you can start initially with 50 or 100 Goats as per your Budget and expand your live stock as money and time permits you. I am telling you since it is very hard to expand the shed in future 5)Costs of the shed + yours and labor accommodation you have to check locally in your area but you can reduce the cost as per the site condition and availability of labor and material on time from near by locations. 6)For 150 Goats you need 1 Skilled labor + 1 Helper (Salary- 5500 for skilled + 3500 for

helper) 7)I recommend you to do semi stall feeding( stall feeding + 0nly 3 hours Natural Grazing) because the animals will get good exercise, they will active for mating and the fodder from the land can also be saved to some extent which can lead to reduction in Running Cost. Go for Meat Goats as there is less demand for Goat Milk in the market except in Big Hospitals and Super Markets. Goat rearing is an enterprise which has been practiced by a large section of population in rural areas. Goats can efficiently survive on available shrubs and trees in adverse harsh environment in low fertility lands where no other crop can be grown. In pastoral and agricultural subsistence societies in India, goats are kept as a source of additional income and as an insurance against disaster. Goats are also used in ceremonial feastings and for the payment of social dues. In addition to this, goat has religious and ritualistic importance in many societies. B) BREEDS OF GOAT :\ India has 20 discreet breeds of goats out of the globally identified 102 breeds. The Indian breeds are evolved through natural selection for adaptation of specific agro -

ecological conditions. Important breeds like Jamunapari and Barbari are reared in central parts of India. Black Bengal and White Bengal in Eastern regions and Sangamneri and Malabari in Deccan, Osmanabadi in Westerns Plateau and Coastal areas. The Goat has its authorative place under all production system. It is the only species that can be successfully farmed with any level of intensification. C) ADVANTAGES OF GOAT FARMING The initial investment needed for Goat farming is low. Due to small body size and docile nature, housing requirements and managerial problems with goats are less. Goats are friendly animals and enjoy being with the people. Goats are prolific breeders and achieve sexual maturity at the age of 10-12 months gestation period in goats is short and at the age of 14-16 months it starts giving milk. Twinning is very common and triplets and quadruplets are rare. In drought prone areas risk of goat farming is very much less as compared to other livestock species. Unlike large animals in commercial farm conditions both male and female goats have equal value. Goats are ideal for mixed species grazing. The animal can thrive well on wide variety of thorny bushes, weeds, crop residues, agricultural by-products unsuitable for human consumption. Under proper management, goats can improve and maintain grazing land and reduce bush encroachment (biological control) without causing harm to the environment. No religious taboo against goat slaughter and meat consumption prevalent in the country. Slaughter and dressing operation and meat disposal can be carried without much environmental problems. The goat meat is more lean (low cholesterol) and relatively good for people who prefer low energy diet especially in summer and sometimes goat meat (chevon) is preferred over mutton because of its "chewability" Goat milk is easy to digest than cow milk because of small fat globules and is naturally homogenized. Goat milk is said to play a role in improving appetite and digestive efficiency. Goat milk is non allergic as compared to cow milk and it has anti-

fungal and anti bacterial properties and can be used for treating uro genital diseases of fungal origin. Goats are 2.5 times more economical than sheep on free range grazing under semi arid conditions. Goat creates employment to the rural poor besides effectively utilizing unpaid family labour. There is ample scope for establishing cottage industries based on goat meat and milk products and value addition to skin and fiber. Xv ) Goat is termed as walking refrigerator for the storage of milk and can be milked number of times in a day. Syed Mustafa Hussain Razvi syed@shinefarms.com www.shinefarms.com
Capital cost & Running Cost in Goat / Sheep Farming

Reply #2 on: January 25, 2011, 07:20:20 PM The cost can be divided in 2 mainly Capital Cost and Running Cost Capital Cost Comprises of amount required for purchasing the Live Stock, constructing the shed, accommodation and toilets for you and your labour, water troughs and feeders, fodder cutting machine and other small expenses like ears tags if you have your own land. It is very good if you can take any land with poultry shed on lease and start goat farming as many people who are in shortage of money are doing this by taking my advice. Running Cost includes cost incur from salaries of labour, vaccination, light and water, transportation and fodder maintenance
Fodder for Goats

Reply #3 on: January 25, 2011, 07:23:49 PM Dear Friends, You can grow the fodder like Maize, Jawar, Hybrid Napier RBN13, Lucerne, Stylo Scabra, Subabul and Bajra for your Goats if you are sending the animals for Grazing also. You have to grow Monocotyledons which comprises of Maize, Jawar, Hybrid Napier, Gunea Grass, Oats and Para grass. These fodders are rich in energy and are used for supplying energy to animals and this should contain 66% of the diet.

Secondly you have to also grow Dicotyledons like Stylo , Lucerne, Berseem and Subabul. These fodders are rich in protein and helps in Body building of animals and Milk Production. Please contact your local Agriculture University to get best variety of seeds / Slips of Fodder. Hi i have mango garden in outskirts of hyderabad and we bought 100 sheep with near by farmers 20 days back, their age is 3 months and they are doing good. which type of rearing you'll recommend, stall fed or semi intensive or intensive? and your opinion about silage Thanks Rajesh Reply #6 on: January 31, 2011, 11:45:22 PM Dear Sir, This is what I feel and I am sharing my experience on intensive and semi intensive with all the Goat / Sheep farmers on this website. Intensive farming is suitable for those farms where there are no near by lands for grazing or the owners are more cautious about the health of the exotic breeds and they dont want his animals to get mix with the flocks of local farmers and catch various diseases or drink the contaminated water on road side due to in competent grazing staff. where the farm owners are having only limited land and they cant get near by land on lease or not allowed for free grazing due to their bad relationship with the neighbors. Where the live stock farms are very closed near by villagers who are having crooks or near by forest or presence of irresponsible staff where the owner is 100% sure that if the animals are taken out they can easily stolen by near by villagers who are un employed or eaten by fox or wild dogs or sold by the grazing staff in the market at cheap rate and this staff will always give miss lead them that Goat / Sheep has been eaten by wild dogs or wolfs or it has mixed by mistake in others people flocks by mistake and bring back the animals from their home or relatives if the owner take severe action on them. Where the near by land can only be available after harvesting the crops if the owner is only confined land. Semi Intensive Farming I like to high light some more benefits which I am knowing and I am always recommending all my friends to do semi stall feeding ( stall feeding + 3 to 4 hours of Natural Grazing) because

Most of the farm owners start with low budget or take loan from bank and I dont want our farmers to incur high running cost due to intensive farming and it is my 1st responsibility to reduce the running cost of poor farmers as a educated farmer. The animals will get daily good exercise and they will active for mating, The fodder from the owner land can also be saved to some extent which can lead to reduction in Running Cost. The farm owners of the Goats /sheep farms can leave their Goats/ sheep to graze/browse on the crop residue of near by agriculture farmer when the crop has been harvested. The advantages of this system is that increase in fertility of the land by droppings and urine of these animals, control of wasteful habits, good growth rate, easier management and possible increased crop yields in future. Here the Goat / sheep farm owner will get fodder for his goats and agricultural farmer will get fertility in the land by the droppings. If the land and time is more the goat farmer can give some day / night droppings. Here the goats/ sheep are grazed round the year for a few hours daily animals should be given good nutritious fodder which is rich in energy and protein apart from Concentrate. This system of management can be suitable for variable type of climate and small to medium size flock as very few farmers are having animals in thousands. Due to the non availability of grazing lands, it is very difficult to find free grazing lands especially surroundings of Hyderabad city. Health management is also a task in extensive grazing. Cost of the silage is not less than Rs.6/- per animal/day. It is also costing a lot. In both breeding and fattening business models it is a rope walk. But our clients are managing as the end unit selling price is good and they have their own marketing systems Syed Mustafa Hussain Razvi syed@shinefarms.com www.shinefarms.com Reply #7 on: February 01, 2011, 10:28:30 PM Thanks for the informative answers. what i feel is that semi intensive is a better choice than the rest, In intensive farming Maintaing hygiene of the shed is very difficult, the amonia released from the shed is causing more mortality than the parsite mortality of semi intensive which can be controlled with regular deworming Cost per day is more than what we gain from animal weight leading to loss Different varieties of grass are available in semi intensive leading to more intake (upto 5 kgs) by the animal per day than the monotonous silage ( 2 kgs/day) which leads to more wt gain with less cost

The soil will be more fertilized with droppings and urine which leads to more yeilds Reply #9 on: February 04, 2011, 05:54:12 PM Dear Sir To avoid more ammonia Floor is tiled with bricks with gap of one inch filled with sand so that urine drains off immediately without soiling the droppings Maintaining good hygiene Allowing plenty of sunlight to the shed Pls correct me if i am wrong and add your suggestions Reply #11 on: February 12, 2011, 10:47:48 PM Project Report on Osmanabadi Goats (Not for Bank with following topics) at 1000 Rs only with folllowing topics Introduction & Advantages on Goat farming Complete details of Osmanabadi Goats General guide lines based on practical experience & theoretical guide lines Assumptions taken to prepare the project report Shed & feed facilities Expenditure - capital cost which is 1 time set up & running cost & profit for 1 year.
