WEEKLY ADDRESS: Acting Responsibly on Behalf of the American People

WASHINGTONIn this weeks address, President Obama urged both Republicans and Democrats to take action to avoid defaulting for the first time in our nations history. While the two parties are not far apart in their goals, they must resolve their differences quickly so that the United States can continue paying its Social Security checks, veterans benefits, and contracts with thousands of American businesses. The time has come to stop endangering the Triple A bond rating of the United States, put aside partisan politics, and behave responsibly to ensure a balanced approach to reducing our nations deficit. Remarks of President Barack Obama Weekly Address Saturday, July 30, 2011 Washington, DC Today, Id like to speak with you about the ongoing and urgent efforts to avoid a first-ever default and get our fiscal house in order. Republicans in the House of Representatives just spent precious days trying to pass a plan that a majority of Republicans and Democrats in the Senate had already said they wouldnt vote for. Its a plan that wouldnt solve our fiscal problems, but would force us to re-live this crisis in just a few short months. It would hold our economy captive to Washington politics once again. If anything, the past few weeks have demonstrated thats unacceptable. Any solution to avoid default must be bipartisan. It must have the support of both parties that were sent here to represent the American people not just one faction of one party. There are multiple ways to resolve this problem. Congress must find common ground on a plan that can get support from both parties in the House. And its got to be a plan that I can sign by Tuesday. Look, the parties are not that far apart here. Were in rough agreement on how much spending we need to cut to reduce our deficit. We agree on a process to tackle tax reform and entitlement reform. There are plenty of ways out of this mess. But there is very little time. We need to reach a compromise by Tuesday so that our country will have the ability to pay its bills on time bills like Social Security checks, veterans benefits, and contracts weve signed with thousands of American businesses. If we dont, for the first time ever, we could lose our

countrys Triple A credit rating. Not because we didnt have the capacity to pay our bills we do but because we didnt have a Triple A political system to match it. And make no mistake for those who reflexively oppose tax increases on anyone, a lower credit rating would be a tax increase on everyone wed pay higher interest rates on mortgages, car loans, and credit cards. That would be inexcusable, and entirely self-inflicted by Washington. The power to solve this is in our hands. All thats needed is a simple vote that Democrats and Republicans have taken for decades, including all of the leaders in Congress today. It was done 18 times under President Reagan. 7 times under George W. Bush. And it must be done again now. Its not a vote that allows Congress to spend more money. Raising the debt ceiling simply gives our country the ability to pay the bills Congress has already racked up. It gives the United States of America the ability to keep its word. And it will let businesses and our economy breathe a sigh of relief. On Monday night, I asked you to make your voice heard in this debate. And the response was overwhelming. One of the emails we received was from a woman named Kelly Smith, who wanted to send this message to Washington: I keep my home clean, work hard at a full time job, give my parents any monies I can so they can afford their medications, I pay my bills and by all appearances I am a responsible person. All Im asking is that you be responsible. I have my house in order and all Im asking is that you get yours the same way. Here in Washington, we need to get our house in order. And I have to say, Democrats in Congress and some Senate Republicans have been listening and have shown themselves willing to make compromises to solve this crisis. Now all of us including Republicans in the House of Representatives need to demonstrate the same kind of responsibility that the American people show every day. The time for putting party first is over. The time for compromise on behalf of the American people is now. Thank you.

As a child of Chinese If you think they are Alive you better Play Seriously Man... immigrants growing up in the State of Washington, having the opportunity to represent America, the land of my birth, and to represent American values was surely beyond any dream I could possibly have. And I can only imagine just how proud my dad, Jimmy, who passed away in January, would be for his son to be the first Chinese American to represent the United States in the land of his and my mothers birth. It may be clich to say only in America, but in this case and for this role, it is both profoundly true and profoundly important. It is America and Americas promise as a land of freedom, equality, and opportunity that I will represent when serving the President and the American people as the United States ambassador to China.

And Gary did an honor student, an Eagle Scout, scholarships, all kinds of experiences at Yale and getting his law degree at Boston University, and then returning to Washington to become a state representative and a county executive of King County and a two-time governor of Washington State, until recently, when he became our Secretary of Commerce. And Garys hard work didnt just help his family. He helped improve the lives of the people of Washington and of the United States. He was a great job creator in Washington during two national recessions. He has helped to lead our efforts to increase U.S. exports. He has brought the Census in on time and under budget, an unheard of accomplishment. Hes brought comprehensive patent reform legislation closer to passage than it has in decades. And theres just so much else that can be pointed to in such a history of distinction in his many public service responsibilities. And now, he becomes the first Chinese American to represent the United States as ambassador in Beijing. Now, as serious as he is, those of us who know him know that he can loosen up. (Laughter.) And Ive heard the stories about singing the night that he won the governorship in front of casts of hundreds. I love the story about how he proposed to Mona with a banner attached to a little airplane that flew by that said, Mona, I love you. Will you marry me? And I think for his three children, they should know that he says all the time that, despite being a governor or a cabinet secretary, the most important job hes ever had is being your father. And I thank you for going with your father to Beijing. (Laughter.) Because I know its not easy, but I believe youre going to have an amazing experience, and I know how much it will mean to the people of China to meet all of you as well. Gary, I also know that you wish your late father, Jimmy, were standing here today, because you know how proud your family would be that you are, in a sense, going full circle on this journey that brought them here and now brings you to Beijing. But think about the story that Gary takes with him, the son of an immigrant family from China who didnt learn to speak English until he started school, whose grandfather came to the United States from China in the 1890s and worked as a house servant in return for English lessons, whose father and mother worked in their mom-and-pop grocery seven days a week, 365 days a year, so their five children would have better lives. The Locke family understood what the American dream meant. They knew that it was an opportunity and not a guarantee, and that they had to do their part to be able to take advantage of what this country offered.
