Enterprise Architecture Project: Windows 7 Migration/Upgrade This document outlines the justification for a migration or upgrade of all desktop and laptop computer systems to the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. Windows 7 offers significant security, performance and reliability featuresfeatures which will allow our organization to reap significant benefits from the migration. Users will be more productive, Home Support operations will be more streamlined and long-term PC administration costs will decrease. At the same time, Home Support plans to take this opportunity to review its deployment and maintenance strategies for PCs and ensure they provide the best return on investment (ROI) possible. This means a review of the existing tool sets for maintenance and administration as well as a review and update of the processes behind the tool set. This will be an ideal opportunity to make sure all PC-related IT processes rely on standard operating procedures (SOP) in support of updated service level agreements (SLA). Finally, Home Support plans to rely on this project to introduce two new technologies: x64 processors on the desktop and IPv6 transport for networked communications. These two new technologies will be enablers for the organizations move into 21st Century computing. The overall project will take an estimated six months to complete and will rely on our current three-year attrition program to introduce the required hardware modifications. Last years attrition program replaced 65 percent of our systems with machines that are Windows 7-ready. This means that only 35 percent will not have the most up to date hardware. These systems will be moved to low-intensity productivity workers.

Page 4

Enterprise Architecture Project: Windows 7 Migration/Upgrade

1. User productivity is significantly decreased because our users find it specific applications wont work with Windows XP 2. User productivity is affected by system crashes. On average, our users are reporting multiple crashes daily which in most cases means there machine will need to be re-imaged 3. The organization will be upgrading the network and moving to IPV6 by the spring of 2012 4. Computer security is compromised because laptops are not being encrypted when users with laptops have to work outside of the company or even travel. 5. Collaboration solutions are not integrated and several solutions are deployed in the network. 6. Network performance is poor with remote users suffering from slow and disrupted access to central resources. 7. PCs are difficult to deploy with multiple images to manage and extensive efforts to update these images on an ongoing basis. For example, our organization manages 10 images and it takes a technician 10 hours to update them every month. 8. Applications are difficult to manage with multiple versions of the same software in the network and multiple applications providing the same functionality. Today, our organization manages 50 applications in total.

Types of Installation

In Windows 7 there are 3 types of installations. Below is a diagram of all three installations and what they entail. In our environment, we will be using cleaninstallations along with Migration installations. A clean(also known as custom) installation is performed on an existing or new PC and installs Windows 7 with fresh settings. Choose a clean installation of Windows 7 in one of the following cases:
y y y y There is no operating system yet installed on the computer. The installed operating system does not support an upgrade installation to Windows 7. The computer has more than one partition and needs to support dual-boot or multiple-boot configurations. You prefer a clean installation

An upgrade(also known as in-place) installs Windows 7 on the same partition as the existing operating system, but maintains applications, user settings, and user files. Be aware of the following:
y y y You can upgrade from Windows Vista service pack 1; you cannot perform an upgrade installation from Windows XP. A Windows 7 upgrade automatically rolls back to Windows Vista if there is a failure during the installation process. You can also roll back to Windows Vista if you have not performed a successful log on. If you want to return to Windows Vista once you successfully log on to Windows 7, you must perform a clean Windows Vista installation or restore the system from a backup.

A migration copies user files and settings from an existing computer to a new Windows 7 installation. Use a migration when you would like to upgrade to Windows 7 but an upgrade is not supported, or if you want to perform a clean install but retain your current user settings and data. To perform a migration:
1. Save existing user settings and data to a temporary location. 2. Install Windows 7 on the same computer (over the existing operating system) or a new computer. For example, you might perform a migration on an existing computer that cannot be upgraded to Windows 7, or on an existing computer if you just want to start with fresh operating system settings. 3. Transfer user settings to the new installation.

System Images
A system image is a single file containing all the contents of the Windows 7 operating system installation and any additional files on a computer's hard drive. System administrators typically use system images to centrally deploy Windows 7 to computers throughout large, enterprise environments. A Windows 7 system image is stored as a Windows Image (WIM) file. A WIM:
y y y y y y y y Contains all of the necessary installation files. Is file-based (not sector-based as in ISO files). Has the .wim extension. Can contain multiple disk images. Uses a single-instance storage and references in a file system tree to save space and imaging time. Is hardware independent. Can be spanned into multiple parts, each with a .swm extension. Can be mounted as a new volume under Windows with a drive letter for extraction or content updates.

In our environment, we will build a Windows 2008 server that will hold all of the Windows 7 images. We will have a base image for every different model on the network and then well have an image for every department in Contoso.Every department needs different applications, which is why well need an image for every department. Below is diagram on how our images will be created.
The windowsPE configuration pass is the first step in the installation process. The following steps are performed: 1. If Windows PE is used, the WinPE environment is initialized. Tasks performed include: o Adding drivers required by WinPE (such as non-native drivers or network drivers if booting to a network share). o Creating WinPE log files or the page file. 2. The Windows Setup program starts and performs the following: o The operating system edition to install is identified. o The product key is entered. o The hard disk is partitioned and formatted. o The Windows image is copied to the hard disk.

Hardware and Applications

Windows 7 in most cases will include the drivers for most hardware. A devicedriver is software that enables interaction between a computer's operating system and hardware.Drivers are typically provided by the manufacturer and are often present with a Windows 7 installation.Windows 7 supports Plug and Play devices so that when a new hardware device is plugged into the computer, the operating system searches for the appropriate driver package to be installed. To insure all drivers are properly installed, use Device Manager.Device Manager is a good way to double check the installation of all drivers went smoothly. If there are question marks present after opening Device Manager, this is an indication that all or some of the drivers were not successfully installed. Below is a diagram of what Device Manager looks like.

Hardware and Applications (Continued)

Prior to upgrading to Windows 7, the first step is to make sure your applications are compatible with Windows 7. To determine if an application is compatible with Windows 7, Program Compatibility or Application Compatibility Toolkit will need to be run. Program compatibility is a tab within the application that is manually set. Compatibility modes are designed to replicate the environment of previous operating systems. If the application is not compatible with Windows 7 the following will happen:You will see a warning and an option to run the program if the program does not cause a serious problem or if the problem is known to cause a serious problem, it is blocked from running.Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) is a set of tools used to resolve application compatibility issues with Windows 7.The Application Compatibility Manager collects, configures, and analyzes compatibility information, and will report compatibility issues you are likely to experience with the currently installed applications.

Hardware and Applications (Continued)

Windows 7 as you may have hoped is not compatible with all applications. For applications that are specific to Windows XP, Windows 7 has a feature called Windows XP Mode.Windows XP mode is a virtual machine that runs within the Windows 7 operating system. The idea behind the XP mode is to be able to virtually run XP, which in turn will allow a user to run any application that was not compatible with Windows 7. In a sense, a user would be able to get the best of both worlds. In order to run Windows XP mode, we will need to upgrade/migrate to any of the following versions: Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise editions.

Networking

Home Support division will implement a VPN solution along with a terminal server for all of our users to connect to the Network. Home support will purchase a VPN switch from Juniper Solutions that will support at-least 200 users at one time. Once the users come through the VPN switch, they will be sent to the home page that will allow them to access the Terminal Server. Once the users are on the Terminal Server, they will have to log in using their network credentials. Once logged in, the users will have desktop, MS applications and access their home directory. The Terminal Server will be configured to handle 200 connections just like the VPN switch. Below is a diagram of network configuration.

Resource Access

In Windows 7 resources access consists of the following areas: Authentication and Authorization, NTFS Permissions, Resource Sharing, Printer Sharing and Management, Auditing and Encryption. In our environment, our users will be authenticated and authorized to specific resources depending on their credentials. All of the Windows 7 machines will support NTFS as its a higher security standard than FAT. In Resource Sharing, all machines will be part of a domain. All users will be able to access files through a file server. Print Sharing and Management will take place by having all printers on a file server. The users will be able to search the directory and find any printer on the network. Auditing will be done via group policy. Encryption will be implement by using bit-locker that comes built in with Windows 7.

Mobile Computing

In Windows 7, Mobile Computing covers the following areas: NAP, VPN, Direct access and Bit-locker. NAP will be installed to insure that any machine that comes on the network has the latest updates. Any machine that does not have the latest updates will not be able to access any resources on the network until all updates have been installed. VPN will be used as all of our users in this department work from home. Direct access will not be implemented for this department. Bit locker will be installed on all laptops in the event a user loses their laptop.

Monitoring and Maintenance

Laptops and desktops that will be running Windows 7 will not be monitored. The only equipment that will be monitored is servers, routers and switches.NETIQ will be used to monitor the servers, routers and switches. Maintenance on the desktops and laptops will consist of a service contract with Dell that will replace any faulty parts within a 24hr time frame.

Enterprise Architecture Project: Windows 7 Migration/Upgrade

Backup and Recovery

Windows 7 will not be backed up as we will have an image stored on the network in the event a computer becomes corrupt with a virus or has a hardware failure. Every department will have their own specific image so if a users machine has to re-image, they will receive an image based on their job position. When users log into the network, they will be mapped to a shared drive on the file server. This is where users will be encouraged to store any data that is of any importance. The users data will be backed up on the file server nightly. There will be incremental backups on the file server nightly and full backups once a week. For recovery, once a month the backup team will perform test restores on the file server to ensure the backup tapes are working appropriately.
