Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is becoming an increasingly important


activity to business nationally and internationally.Globalization accelerates and large corporations since as global providers these corporations have progressively recognized the benefits of providing CSR, programs in their various locations.CSR activities are now being undertaken throughout the globe.

What is corporate social responsibility?


The term is often used interchangeably for other terms such as corporate citizenship and is also linked to the concept of triple bottom line reporting (TBL), which is used as a framework for measuring as organizations performance against economic, social and environmental parameters. The rational for CSRhas been articulated in a number of ways.In essences it is about building sustainable businesses, which need healthy economics, markets and communities. The key drivers for CSR are. 1. Enlightened self-interest-Creating a synergy of ethics, a cohesive society and a sustainable global economy where markets, labour and communities are able to function well together 2. Social investment- Contributing to physical infrastructure and social capital is increasingly seen as a necessary part of doing business. 3. Transparency and trust-Business has low rating of trust in public perception. There is increasing expectation that companies will be more often more accountable and be prepared to report publicly on their performance is social and environment arenas. 4. Increased public expectations of business Globally companies are expected to do more than provide jobs and contribute to the economy through taxes and employment. The unifying message for all these initiatives is to inspire them to become better citizens and leaders of tomorrow, leading to a Happy India.In addition Individual Tata companies have launched program with specific messaging for the youth: 1. Tata crucible- The Tata crucible started in 2004 is a corporate/ campus quiz held in India, UK and Singapore. The objective of the programme is to engage participants, mainly college students and young manager across India, on an intellectual level and stimulate the thirst for knowledge. 2. Tata building India- Started in 2006, Tata building India is a national essay writing competition for Indian school children (class 6-12) that is meant to inspire young student to think about nation building. The competitive promoters patriotism as a value and motivates children to think along positive path. 3. Tata international social entrepreneurship scheme- Tata ISES, which began in 2008, is a two-month social internship programme for international student from select universities in UK and the US the aim of the programme is to give students from leading foreign universities grassroots level exposure to Indiathrough internship with community initiative projects of Tata companies this help to promote international understanding while bringing international perspectives to the projects. 4. Tata JagritiYatra- The Tata jagritiyatra initiative was started in 2008 and involves political social and business entrepreneurs after 20-25 years. It is an 18 days experiential train journey across India that promotes a journey of selfdiscovery and entrepreneurship. The aim to awaken the spirit of entrepreneurship in the youth and inspire them with the entrepreneurial spirit that drives India beyond the big cities it also encourage them to take up social and economic enterprise project by giving them an opportunity to meet iconic leaders who are developing unique solution to Indias challenges.

Serve to community
Tata companies and Tata trusts support community development programme involving health, education women child welfare, income generation and other initiatives Tata council for community initiative:- The Tata council for community initiative is the umbrella that guide and supports Tata group companies with their community development initiatives, TCCI has a charter that embraces social development environmental management biodiversity restoration and employee volunteering.

 TATA index for sustainability: - The index provider guidelines for Tata companies looking to fulfil their social responsibility, and are built around the Tata business excellence model.  Tata company initiatives: - The most prominent of these are the Tata chemicals society for rural development, the Tata steel rural development society, Rallilove acts (Assisting communities through service) and Voltas for women.

Sports and arts


As part of its social responsibility Tata has become a senior support of art, heritage architecture; cultural legacy and sports academies across the country.  National centre for the performing arts NCPA, gifted to the city of Mumbai by the sir Dorabji Tata trust, is an institution created to serve the cause of the performing and allied arts  Marg- A unique magazine of the arts and a publisher of books on the arts, was founded in 1946.It is an encyclopaedia of the art and culture of India and related civilizations.

ENVIRONMENT:A deep concern for the environment drives TATA companies to undertake green projects that preserve and regenerate local ecologies. The TATA ethos places a special emphasis on environmental and ecological issues. Its efforts to preserve and regenerate the environment find expression in the slew of projects and programmes it has undertaken in and around its facilities and operations. A focus area in this context is the climate change crisis.  Fuelling the movement: - The TATA power energy club is driving a huge initiative to sensitive people and school children about the need for energy conservation.  Green strategies: - TATA Metaliks has given a green slant to all of its business and plant operations in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint and mitigate its environmental impact.

 The power of green: - Concern over the degradation of the urban green cover leads NDPL to start its own environmental movement- planting 2500 bamboos sapling in its locations.  A tale of two ideas:- TATA Steel has blended two desperate ideas to crystalline the Jamshedpur ideal of an industrial township that is wedded to environmental consciousness.

Ecology of Hope: - How do you provide a livelihood to the growing number

TATA Institute of Social Sciences:- TISS is a pioneer in the field of social work education in the Asia Pacific region. TATA Medical Centre: - The TATA Medical Centre coming up in Kolkata, India is a state-of-the art centre for diagnosis treatment and cancer research.
