Peru: Fuel taxes according to toxicity

Situation before project start:

The fuel taxation system recompenses the use of the most pollution fuel, therefore hindering the shift to cleaner engine technologies
Project interventions:

Results:

New fuel taxation system that recompenses the use of clean fuels (and therefore modern engine technology) elaborated and in gradual implementation Trend towards cars with modern technology statistically proved

Bolivia: Air quality monitoring

No awareness about negative impacts of air pollution on public health and environment
Project interventions:

Pilot monitoring network established Technical staff trained Joint funding body: municipalities & universities Gradually decreasing co-funding of equipment

Healthcare Waste Management - Separation

To assure the sustainability of the separation of healthcare waste in origin, various steps have been undertaken:
Yearly evaluations headed by Ministry of Health Waste management will be part of accreditation of hospitals Introduction of waste management into university careers

Success stories in pilot hospitals:

Amount of infectious waste reduced by 50% (Cochabamba) 25% of general waste sold to recycling companies Amount of infectious waste reduced by 30% (La Paz)

Healthcare Waste Management - Collection

Assistance to improve separated collection of healthcare waste through the following measures:
Optimisation of routes of the collection service based on the information provided by the baseline studies Adapt vehicles for the collection of infectious healthcare waste, according to national standards Tricycles for areas of difficult access by vehicle, strategic distribution of transfer stations Training the staff of the private operators and the public supervisors of the collection service

Healthcare Waste Management - Disposal

For reasons of sustainability, the project priorizes the following measures:
Improvement of monitoring of final disposal Competence of the local authorities, since urban waste management has been privatised Creation or improvement of existing section

for healthcare waste within municipal landfill

Three big cities (El Alto, La Paz, Cochabamba) are in the process of translation of the landfill Lobbying and assistance for an environmental

friendly deposition of the healthcare waste in the new landfills

A landfill built with up-to-date technology is more sustainable than the decentralized incineration (no hospital incinerator is working properly)

Adjusting experiences made in Central America to the Bolivian context, the action line will emphasise in:
