Course Description

This course offers an in depth examination of how to develop or buy a certified emissions reduction project in a carbon market. The course will offer a step by step guide for people who want to develop and sell carbon credits from a greenhouse gas emissions reduction project, and information for buyers on how to identify quality projects and partners and avoid risk. Participants will examine case studies and market rules to understand how to identify a potential project, develop the necessary data, find financing, and meet the requirements for project verification and validation. They will gain an understanding of the information and personnel required to develop or evaluate a successful project. The course will provide an overview of the major markets and standards for carbon credits, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), the Voluntary Carbon Standard and the Gold Standard, how the standards and markets differ in terms of rules and types of credits allowed, who are the main buyers and sellers in each market, and the prices and terms of market sales. Course participants will be able to review examples of the types of projects that have been successfully developed in the past, and to discuss new, emerging opportunities and project areas such as forestry credits and energy demand reduction credits. At the end of the program participants will have the information they need to initiate the potential sale or purchase of carbon credits in a carbon market. Who Should Attend? Facilitator: Gurmit Singh is the founding director of UCC. An educator and ecologist with an entrepreneurial spirit, Gurmit received the Lockheed Martin Innovation Award 2008 Gurmit has over 25 years experience in natural resource stewardship including work as a solar energy consultant, naturalist guide, park interpreter, scientist, business owner, community leader, and volunteer activist. He is currently a Stewardship Advisor for wildlife habitat conservation lands and various Government and Private bodies. He is a qualified engineer from Heinrich-Heine-Universitat Dusseldorf, Germany. He worked in Germany for 14 years in USA for 8years in renewable energy sector. He has been involved in policy studies, project development and strategic consultancy in the areas of Emissions Trading and the Kyoto Mechanisms, since 1995. He has authored 2 books, namely Understanding Carbon Credits and Exploit Nature-Renewable Energy Technologies. Gurmit has extensive experience as an educator of adults, families, and youth in a variety of settings including retreats, workshops, conferences, college seminars, classes, and mentoring. He is also an active learner, participating in many ecological education programs through many organizations. He is a sought-after presenter at national conferences and universities. His book "Understanding Carbon Credits" is also a reference book with UNFCCC.
