at the Mare Island lift bridge while a maintenance crew repaired a malfunction. They arrived in time to join the festivities sponsored by the Martinez YC in celebration of National Marina Day. Drawings were held throughout lunch and several of our members came away with prizes. Norm and Else hosted cocktails aboard Elsinor on Saturday evening. Starship and Cking Fun left for Napa early on Sunday and avoided another bridge delay that caught the rest of the fleet. This time the delay was less than 30 minutes. Except for the bridge problems, it was another great cruise. Thanks Norm and Else!

our Board of Directors is always in search of new ways to attract new members and has approved a new membership structure. The basic membership structure that is in place will remain with these modifications: 1) If a new member is of the age 40 or under, they may join by paying the initiation fee and then the regular annual dues. 2) Legacy membership: If we have a member that is the son or daughter of a current or deceased member, they may join without the initiation fee and pay only the annual fee continuously. Both memberships were done to create an interest for new members; and the second was inspired by Lindsay and enjoyment that was achieved by Bill and Merrilee Newton having their daughter involved in the club. I have to believe that other members could experience the same enjoyment. (Kurt Stahr has applied for a refund and I had to explain that this was not a retroactive plan.) The vetting process will remain for all member levels. We need to look for new ways to grow the club. We have gone through some challenging years in lease negotiations. The future will depend on bonding with the community and the promotion of water activity. ---Steer the course

une and July were two very busy months at the club. V-32 sailboat races, electric boat parade, and a July 4th Cruise-in by members were just a few of the events dockside. Loveliest Lady a 70 yacht from Sausalito spent nearly a week at our dock and almost made us think that we were living the life of the rich and famous. A defibrillator is a portable piece of equipment that can deliver an electric shock to a victim of cardiac arrest in order to restore the heart to its normal rhythm. The defibrillator contains computer software that can analyze the cardiac rhythm and deliver a shock only if the heart requires it. Therefore, it is not possible to administer defibrillation to a person with healthy, regular cardiac rhythm. Survival rates of cardiac arrest victims are directly related to the time it takes to resuscitate and administer defibrillation. Contact: Rear Commodore Ken Graham - 224-7015

The Lady Di, a 40 Krogen, departed Napa on

May 31 with Donald Buresh & Kurt Stahr as my crew. We were looking at 5-6 days of reasonable weather for a cruise up the Pacific Coast of Oregon, Washington, the San Juan Islands and Victoria Island in Canada. We hoped to arrive at our destination after 120 hours of pow-- log of Scott Brown ering continuously and taking shifts at the helm.
(Editors note: I have received 6 pages of ships log from Scott . It is impossible to run all of it in the NVYC Newsletter. Therefore, I am just going to give you a taste of their adventure and hope that Scott will post his log when he gets home.) Scott reports: As we approach Eureka, the sea turned south with big long swells ...much better not to look behind us...no boat traffic. Weather holds ok until Columbia River...and then we get kicked around all night. We hold on tight and next day approach Cape Flattery into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. 120 hours after leaving the Golden Gate we pull into Neah Bay and turn off our little engine for a well-deserved rest and oil change. We take a wobbly land walk and go out for a nice dinner. We arrive at Friday Harbor on a sunny afternoon and it is gorgeous...we are minor celebrities in Anacortes...not too many boats from California. The crew catches a shuttle to the airport and home. Now I am on my own. I crisscross bays and inlets looking for good anchorages and found some beauties. My only contact is HAM guru Bruce Butler back in Napa. July 20 and Lady Di is comfortably docked in front of the Empress Hotel in downtown Victoria. Diane has arrived from Napa. It was a little dicey getting into Victoria coping with fog, looking for the shipping channel and dodging float planes. Finally, I contacted another boat and followed her into the harbor. Next stop was Reid Harbor on Stuart Island where we had to drop off wine to avoid confiscation by customs. Who else is there? Nancy and Phil delEtoile (former members) aboard Brave Duck. They trucked her up a year ago and are now in their second season of sailing the San Juan Islands. July 30 update: Kurt and Dominique Stahr chartered a boat for a week and it was great cruising together. They left for Napa today. Will probably bring the boat back down after the Delta Cruise when my crew is available.
