Campbell Soup Labels - Saving the UPC portion of a Campbell Soup Product earns money for our school.

Just cut out the UPC label and send it in. For more information please visit their website at: www.labelsforeducation.com Car riders are picked up using a number system. Please help your child learn his or her number; it will make the car rider process much smoother. The car rider line does tend to be long the first few weeks, but does improve quickly. Please be patient as our little ones get accustomed to this routine.

If your child is absent, please call the school sick line (386-206-4622) to report the absence. In addition, please send a note on a separate piece of paper as to the reason why and I will turn it into the office. Knowledge of the alphabet is key to learning to read and write. We will cover the alphabet however; many children enter Kindergarten already knowing their letters and many of their sounds (not just able to sing the alphabet song), which is great! If your child does not know their letters, please begin to work on this at home immediately to give your child a good start. Begin by teaching the letters in your childs name.

Discipline is simple. We work hard as a class to make the classroom a positive and safe place for all. Our rules are: 1. Be Respectful 2. Be Responsible 3. Be Safe Please refer to the Classroom Behavior Plan located in your Purple Parent Folder for additional information. Dress Code - Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for school. As a general guideline, shorts should come to their fingertips and tank top straps should be the width of two fingers. Please dress your child appropriately for the weather. You may want to send a sweater/jacket to keep at school due to the air conditioning working hard during the hot months of the year. Remember to put your childs name, teachers name, and room number in their clothing. Children should also wear sneakers for PE and recess time.

Birthdays are a very big deal for all children. If you would like to celebrate your childs birthday at school, you may bring in a store bought treat for the class. Please let me know at least a day in advance. Please see the Birthday letter in your Purple Parent Folder for additional information. I will send home book order forms from Scholastic for you and your child to look over every month. Book clubs offer books at reduced prices. It's a great way to build your child's home library and our classroom earns free books when you purchase! You can send your order and payment back to school with your child or you can order online. Children will need a backpack big enough to fit their planner, folder and projects coming home. Backpacks with wheels are not allowed at school. Please write your childs name, teacher name, and how your child gets home on their backpack. Good behavior is essential so that all students have the best learning environment possible. The number one rule in our class, Treat others as you would like to be treated. It is my belief that children learn better when they feel secure. I strive to develop a classroom community where students work together and are surrounded with structure and creativity. I redirect students and provide positive reinforcements for appropriate behaviors. Please save all Box Top Labels from items you have purchased at home. These labels help earn money for the school. Please make sure you are sending the labels cut around the actual label. For more information, please visit the website at: www.boxtops4education.com My school email address is caronnam@flaglerschools.com. I check email daily. If you have an email address that youd like me to be aware of, please let me know. Please complete and return the emergency forms promptly. If your home or work phone number change, please inform the office and me. If you will be signing out your child from school early, please write a note in your childs planner. You will need to go to the front desk to have your child called down for dismissal. Regular dismissal begins a 3:15. Extended Day - Students will be walked to the cafeteria in groups at the end of the day.

Your child will be running and playing every day. Flip-flops or shoes without back are not allowed. Please make sure that your child wears the appropriate footwear to school. Please send your child to school in sneakers during the weeks we have P.E. as our Special Area class. FAIR - Three times a year your childs early literacy skills will be assessed. This is an oral test; teachers will administer it on an individual basis. After each assessment, a letter will be sent home explaining your childs results. Folders - A green folder will contain work from that day, notes from school, and the monthly newsletter. Your childs work will be sent home daily in the school planner. Please remove and review your childs work with them nightly. Flexibility Grouping - By the end of the second week of school, all students will be placed in a reading group. This will

Parent Teacher conferences are held at the end of the first and third nineweeks. As we get closer to the dates, I will send a sign-up sheet home for you to select a time that is convenient for your family. Communication is important. Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question, comment, or concern. You can reach me by phone (386-206-4600 ext. 4727), in person, by email (caronnam@flaglerschools.com), or by writing a note in your childs planner. It will be the responsibility of each child to show all notes to the teacher. If you send in a note, please remind your child to show it to the teacher.

be based on their FAIR results and reading level. The students are grouped with like abilities in order for them to get the most benefit from reading instruction. Reading, Language Arts, Science/Social Studies will be taught during the Reading block by myself or my teaching partner, Mrs. OShell. The students will be moved from group to group as their needs change. Homework patterns may change for some of the students based on their reading teachers procedures.

Jackets - When the weather starts to cool off, please make sure your childs name and teachers name or room number is in your childs jacket. You would be amazed at the number of jackets in the school lost and found with no name on them.

Please make sure your child and his or her teacher knows how your child will be getting home. On days that your child will be going home a different way, a note must be written in the planner. I cannot change your childs dismissal routine without a note from home. Grades - Letter or number grades are not given in Kindergarten. Our grading system is as follows: + = All items are correct/consistently demonstrating + = More than half of the items are correct = Half of the items are correct/making progress - = Less than half of the items are correct - = There are no correct items/needs improvement

Keep updated by reading the classroom newsletter every week and checking the planner every day for other notes and information. You can also find important classroom information on our website: http://flaglerschools.com/schools/res/teachers/oshellm and http://flaglerschools.com/schools/res/teachers/caronnam.

Our class will visit the library once every two weeks. Your child will check out a book when we visit the library and return it on or before our next visit. If your child forgets to return the book, they will not be allowed to check out a new book until it is returned. Our class eats lunch at 1:15. If lunch money is sent to school, please send it in the planner. I encourage bag lunches the first week of school while students are adjusting to the cafeteria process. Children can bring their lunch or purchase the school lunch for $1.50. Lunch can be prepaid as far in advance as you would like. Any money sent to school needs to be sent in a sealed envelope with your childs first and last name, teacher name, and childs lunch number. You can also place money into an online account for your child to use at each meal. Visit www.PayPAMS.com to learn more about this service. Please remember to pack a nutritious lunch for your child. Help your child learn to open all juice boxes, chip bags, and any other snacks that you may pack. Kindergarteners are not allowed to bring soda for lunch. When buying lunch, check the school lunch menu to make sure your child will eat the meal being served. Our cafeteria offers PowerAde, Yoo-Hoo, fruit snacks, cookies, rice crispy treats, ice cream and other treats everyday for an extra charge. Kindergarteners are only allowed to buy a treat on Fridays for $.50 to $1.00. We encourage the students to eat the lunch provided instead of snacks due to our limited time to eat lunch. Once our 30 minutes of lunch is up, the students must throw away or pack up any food left on their plate. You may come visit your child during lunch if you like. Please help your child learn their lunch number if they are going to buy lunch.

Homework ~ Homework will be sent home on a monthly basis. In addition to the assigned homework, you should be reading, writing and reviewing letters and words with your child nightly. There will be an average of 30 minutes of homework assigned every night. Even though some of your children are unable to read words yet, they are able to look at the pictures, tell a story about the pictures, or retell the story to you. Help at Home - Please help your child with his work, but do not do it for him or her. High-Frequency Words - (Also called Sight Words) each week we will work on learning a few new words. These words will be written every week in the newsletter. Please help your child learn these words. Flashcards and bingo are great ways to help your child learn these words. The more fluently (automatically) a child can read these words, the better a read he or she will become. Harcourt - This is our reading series. We will be reading stories, working on letter knowledge, working on phonics and phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and learning how to put all of the components of reading together.

Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-esteem and selfconfidence. Kindergarteners are very capable of doing many things on their own and I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom. Please work on the following self-help skills at home with your child: zipping, tying, dressing, etc. Illnesses - Please do not send your child to school sick. If your child becomes ill at school, he or she will be sent to the nurse. If the nurse feels the child needs to go home, she will call the parents. A child must stay at home if he or she has a fever, diarrhea, or has thrown up. Please make sure there are at least two contact numbers on file for your child.

The Kindergarten math curriculum provides students with mathematical experiences that help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics. Math concepts are covered through our daily calendar and math workshop routine. When sending money to school please place it in a sealed envelope. Write your childs name, teachers name, amount of money, and purpose for the money on the outside of the envelope. The easiest way to pay for school lunches is to put money in your childs account for several lunches. Your child will be given notice when their account is getting low.

Writing takes place every day in Kindergarten. One way we accomplish this is through writing in our journals during writers workshop. Encourage your child to write at home for a variety or purposes.

A monthly newsletter will be sent home on Fridays to keep you informed about what is happening in our class. Your child should know his first and last name, and know how to write them as well. During the year we will work on writing first and last names with capital first letters and the rest lowercase.

3. Raise your hand for permission to speak. 4. Make smart choices. 5. Make your dear teacher happy! During the first few weeks, we will be going over the rules and procedures everyday.

Open House will take place on Thursday, September 16 , from 6:30 7:30 PM. We will discuss kindergarten expectations and answer parent questions.

th

A list of school supplies for the year will be given to you during meet the teacher day. Depending on the usage of supplies there may be additional supplies required for the second half of the school year. We will have a designated snack time every morning in the classroom. Please send your child daily with a small snack they can eat neatly during this time. I ask that you pack their snack in a separate Ziploc bag (not in their lunch box). The children are very hungry by snack time and starving by lunch, please try to provide your child with a snack to help them stay focused on learning. Spelling - During writing, your child will not be expected to spell all words correctly. Your child should spell a word as it sounds. An example may be spelling army as rme. The only words we will work on spelling correctly will be our highfrequency words. Otherwise, I encourage the children to sound out their own words. I do not spell words for the children. Sentences - Your child will be expected to compose and write sentences on his or her own. We begin with stressing that children speak in complete sentences and then we will get focus on putting it in writing. We are looking for sentences that begin with a capital letter, have spaces between words and ending punctuation. Generally children begin writing simple sentences during the second nine weeks. At the close of the school year, the students will be able to write at least ten sentences that are complete and on topic. Your child will be attending a special area class daily. We rotate to and from these classes every two weeks. The special area class will be announced in the newsletter every week for the upcoming week. Special areas include: PE, Music, Art, and Health.

Please check and sign your childs planner every night. Your childs daily behavior and any notes from the teacher will be written in the planner. This is also a good place to write notes to the teacher. The RES Parent Teacher Organization is a great group in which to become involved. The PTO helps with various aspects of RES. Many things would not be possible at our school without the PTO. Kindergarteners will have the opportunity to play on the playground during the school year. On rainy days, we will be inside watching a movie or doing indoor games. During the school year, I will take pictures of the children participating in class. I will use these pictures for class books and slide shows. Occasionally newspaper photographers or other school staff may also come in for pictures. Please let me know if you would not like your childs picture to be taken or used.

Class begins promptly at 9:00. If your child arrives after 9:00, he or she will be counted tardy and will need to check-in at the front office before coming to class. Kindergarten report cards are sent home at the end of each nine-week period. A skills assessment will be discussed with you at conferences at the st rd end of the 1 and 3 nine-weeks. Kindergarteners have recess daily from 1:45-2:15. It is so important to read everyday! Read to your child, with your child and listen to your child read. It is also important to let your child see you read for pleasure. We will send home readers and your child will bring home library books. While reading, dont just read the words, talk about the story and help your child understand the story. Predict what will happen, summarize what has happened, discuss how you could change the story, and ask reading comprehension questions (who, what, where, when, and why). The students will participate in Reading Mastery (a curriculum based on letter sounds) everyday. A sounds chart is included in your Purple Parent Folder for use at home. These sounds may look funny to you, but the students will learn how to recognize these sounds fluently and put them together for reading and writing success. Our classroom rules are: 1. Listen when others are talking. 2. Follow directions quickly. Units & Themes ~ During the school year we will cover various units and themes. Units include: The Gingerbread Man, Nursery Rhymes, Apples, Fall, Thanksgiving, Holidays If your child has any changes in their transportation please let me know in writing prior to, or the day of, the transportation change. Calling the office is the best method for letting me know about last minute transportation changes. If your child is unable to tie their shoes, please double knot his or her shoes. Continue to have your child practice tying his or her shoes. Toys are not allowed at school. Toys brought to school will be kept in a June Box and will be returned in June or when a parent is able to pick the item up form school. The exception is Mystery Bag days; the toy must be kept in the backpack and not brought out until time for Mystery Bag.

Around the World, Seasons, Dr. Seuss, 100 Day, and Earth Day. If you have valuable information (books, pictures, guest speakers) relating to our themes, we would love for you to share them with our class. I will list the theme of the week in the newsletter for the upcoming week. If there is a theme that you do not want your child to participate in due to religious concerns, please let me know so that I can make other arrangements.

Please do not send them in frozen, they leak and make our papers wet. Students who are walking home will be escorted to the South Side of the building. Two staff members will walk the students down the path and to the parents. Kindergarten students will only be released to a parent. Dismissal will begin at 3:05. The school website www.flaglerschools.com/RES is full of useful information. Zzzzzzz - Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give your child.
