Synopsis

Introduction to mechanics of mechanical principles of bodies in motion. Application in kinematics of particles and solid bodies, kinetics of particles in two and three dimensions, undamped and damped vibrations, torsional vibrations and ship vibrations. The objectives of this module are to: 1. Provide students with knowledge of the principles and laws of dynamics and their application to engineering systems especially in marine systems. On completion of this module the student will be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Describe the concepts of positions, displacement, velocity and acceleration. Describe the principles of particle motion straight line, curved path and relative motion. Apply the Newtons Laws of motion, gravitational attraction, and to define mass and weight. Identify and describe the principle of work and energy and apply it to solve a problem that involves force, velocity, displacement, power and efficiency, and also ability to solve kinetics and kinematics problems. Identify the principles of impulse and momentum. Apply the 1st and 2nd degree of freedom vibration, damped & un-damped vibration. Hours T 2
