The terms health, fitness and exercise are usually associated with either athletes or celebrities. However, it is not just them who need to look fit and lead healthy lifestyles. Everyone needs to maintain a balanced diet and a fixed exercise schedule. For this issue of CHIP Plus, we stepped out of the tech capsule to explore the world of fitness. Of course, we did have a close look at all the technological aspects that high-tech gymnasiums and workoutbased applications have to offer. We have also reviewed a few cool fitness accessories and gadgets from Reebok, HydraCoach, Adidas and Nike. These products include everything from cool shoes to intelligent water bottles. We also spoke to eminent sportspersons Saina Nehwal and Robin Utthapa and got to know about their views on good health. With the of responsibility of keeping the fervor for the sport alive in India and propelling her nation's name in the sport on her young shoulders, she is one of the most charismatic yet grounded sports personalities India has seen in recent times. Saina Nehwal is one of the sports persons in the country who has made sure that she has carried the name of her sports along with her. She took up to playing badminton at the age of 8. She won her first National Junior Champion in the year 2004, and retained the title in 2005 as well. Her steady and consistent performance in all the major Badminton tournaments in the world is highly commendable. At 20, she has the distinct of being the first Indian sports woman to enter the Quarter Finals for Badminton at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She was rewarded with an Arjuna award in August, 2009.

Fitness for budding players


Badminton players need to have strong and flexible wrist movements, strong calves, and proper foot movements to ensure less injury while playing. Specific badminton fitness involves strengthening of the wrist, elbows, shoulders, neck, chest, abdomen, back, thighs, knees and ankles. To keep the interest alive in the game, one should practice variations in the fitness training.

"I play cricket and train for the love of it"


Robin Uthappa has played cricket at the highest level and tasted much success with his flamboyant batting style. Straight off a successful IPL campaign, here he is giving us his take on fitness.

Hailing from a sports background, Robin Uthappa has the distinction of being one of the few players in the Indian cricket team to have played in every department of the game. He's played the game as a right-handed batsman, a right-arm medium pace bowler, and as a standby wicket-keeper. He has done it all. With all this experience at the highest level, he knows what type of physical fitness each role demands. From dawning the Indian team cap to the IPL, he is one of the few cricketers who have not been out of commission with a major injury. He joins us in conversation and talks about his fitness regime:

MOVING AHEAD ON THE FITNESS PATH


Once settled as a sportsperson, it gets just as harder to maintain your fitness levels. And once you start playing for the country, your fitness regime constantly needs to change depending on your requirements. But for a less physically exerting sport like cricket, you don't really need a rigorous workout schedule. Robin says, "In my opinion, all you need to do is lots of free weights and body weight training. I don't believe that you need too much equipment. Just the bare necessary equipment would do. If any youngster wants to be called fit, he must be able to do

Robin equates fitness to self confidence. He asserts, "For me, it not only helps in improving my physical state, but also helps in improving my state of mind." Following a basic routine of dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls and Swiss balls for both strength and flexibility training, it serves as an addition to the basic weight training regime that he started as a budding cricketer. When asked about managing his hectic playing schedules, especially when it involves a lot of travelling and playing continuously, he positively states, "I play cricket for the love of it. I train for the love of it. So managing this is not a chore for me at all".

the lucky few who haven't had a brush with any major ailments. "Thankfully, I've not had any major injuries, but I do believe that when an athlete is injured, one must spend a lot of time visualizing his or her sport and their skills. The fitness cycle would depend on the kind of injury the athlete has." He also makes sure that he eats right. "When I'm playing tournaments, I dont follow any diet, but in my off season, I do follow a diet.

Sometimes, to follow a diet while playing a tournament can be stressful and I dont like added stress while playing."

FOOD FOR YOUR SOLE


In conclusion, Robin reminds us of his role as the Reebok brand ambassador. What are Swiss balls and medicine balls?


A Swiss ball is an exercise ball filled with air, which is made of soft elastic PVC. The ball is 14 to 34 inches in diameter, and is a popular prop for stretching exercises. You can change the air pressure by either removing a valve stem or fill the air and deflate it as needed. The basic aim of the ball is to create instability to flex your muscles to maintain you basic balance. It is most effective and recommended for back and abdominal muscle exercises. These exercise balls are usually used for exercises falling in the genre of yoga, pilates, physiotherapy, gymnastics, stability and balance among other uses. A medicine ball, on the other hand, is used for strength training and is heavier (between 1 and 12 kgs) and smaller, much like a basketball. It is specifically useful for the abdominal, chest, arm and leg muscles. Made from leather or vinyl, covered with a nylon cloth, and filled with sand, these balls are also used as an exercise tool for injury rehabilitation.

We spoke to India's leading holistic health guru, Mickey Mehta for his take on how easy his transition into holistic fitness was and how much this industry has benefited from technological advancements.

Fitness has usually been associated more with glamour than with health and safety, but the balance is now slowly shifting. Mickey believes that health is as important as fitness. "Fitness to me is very primary, while health is paramount. Fitness is strength, stamina, agility, tone and flexibility, and health is excellence of life and living. I believe health is the pinnacle of wellness. Health covers an exhaustive spectrum of factors that includes physical fitness, mind science and spiritual growth." But can you achieve fitness without equipment? Well, Mickey belongs to the school of thought that believes you can, but adds that the move was personal, and non-imposing on others. by them. Free-hand exercises like yoga, pilates, boot camp, etc. are creative, recreational and address the body in totality."

TECHNOLOGY AND TRAINING


Technology has dradtically changed fitness, not just in terms of better and injury-free equipment, but it has had a dramatic impact in the fields of diagnosis and treatment of muscle-related ailments. "Technology can be used prudently in many ways for assessment and diagnosis, and in facilitating workouts. But you need to know on a personal level, how much is too much," Mickey says. "Every human being, when subjected to time, motion, mass, etc is vulnerable to stress. It is very important to take care. One set back is enough and the whole body can go for a toss," he adds. "When you exercise with love for yourself, for recreation, you can never harm yourself. For example, you can never over eat fruits, but, it is possible to over eat your french fries or burgers," Mickey explains. And that brings us to what Mickey does best - holistic healing. "Holistic health is a composite, multi-pronged approach towards health for inner well being and to regulate disorder to make life and living more meaningful and purposeful. It helps to enhance physical abilities and to bring overall focus in everyday walks of life. This can be achieved through proper integration of practises like corrective breathing, meditation, yoga, regular exercise, diet, prayers, attitude, rest and sleep," says Mickey. But can you combine a holistic workout with equipment? "If done under supervision, both can be combined. The use of machines must be prudent, and do not get dependent on them. Free-hand exercises are imaginative and creative and make the work out complete."

MOTIVATION FOR FITNESS


There is a constant change in the way fitness is viewed by people, and several celebrities train with with Mickey. So is being fit and looking good the same? "I personally think fit and healthy people look good anyway. Just good features with zero health and fitness fails to convey vibrancy. There are no short cuts to fitness.

Discipline, a positive attitude and regularity are the keys. A healthy and a fit mind translates into a healthy body," he says. But self motivation is most important for being consistent and true to your fitness regime. "I stretch, do my postures, I meditate and I stimulate my entire body with these forms of exercises. Breathing and meditation are part of my life", says Mickey, adding, "A healthy body and mind are the prime motivators and can be an inspiring force."

EATING RIGHT
Diet and hydration form a crucial part of any fitness regime. If is important to eat right to be and look healthy. "Food influences our thought processes and attitudes. Food, if incorporated well, can be stimulating. Energy-giving food can alleviate stress and boost immunity. Diet is an important factor that contributes to body and mind wellness. Eating the right food at the right time is vital. Any food in its natural form is ideal, like fruits, raw salads, sprouts, nuts, seeds, herbs, etc." But with the quality of food not being as nutritious as before, supplements have become a rage nowadays. Mickey adds on a cautious note, "Sensible supplementation is the need of the hour. If supplementation is done under supervision and wisely, it can be a boon."

Exercising is a combination of comfort and exertion. Your comfort levels help you pick a form of exercising that your body can adapt to easily. Fitness trainers Uday and Karuna Waghmare talk us through the importance of the right fitness regime, with or without technology.

With technology pushing the world of fitness training and nutrition forwards, most people are now waking up to the idea of living healthy. So if you've been thinking of hitting the gym yourself but dont know where to start, Karuna Waghmare's advice can help you get started. "It is advisable for basic users to start with strength training on machines, because machines offer controlled movements and you know which muscles you are targeting. Advanced users can experiment with their body weight with exercises like push ups and pull ups; these can be done only if you have low percent of body fat. They look easy, but they are difficult," she says. your own body weight or you can use equipment like Smith machines or leg press," Karuna explains.

IS EQUIPMENT FREE TRAINING FOR YOU?


Being a yoga expert, the very mention of the word lights up Karuna's face, but she adds that yoga is not really for everyone. "Yoga is very sacred. Unless your mind, body and soul are not ready to perform, you cannot do yoga. It is difficult to achieve for people who are not willing to ground themselves or who have too much body fat to be flexible. But all is not lost for them," she asserts, "You can use props, and they dont use machines." But how would props help? She explains, "Props are like toys for a kid. They help to ground people who find it difficult to start. For example, breathing exercises begin with sitting in sukhasan (cross legged position), in which all are not comfortable. So you can use chairs instead."

"The human body is basically made to exercise, so you can use equipment or your own body weight for exercise. There are three components to exercise - exercises to enhance flexibility of your muscles, cardio vascular exercise and strengthening exercise. So if you want to train yourself for flexibility, yoga is the best option. You can make your heart stronger from any running activity or by using treadmills. For strength training, you can use

fitness circles. "Technology has improved a lot in weight training and nutrition. It has improved the quality of food," Uday Waghmare adds. "The angles on equipments have changed drastically. It is now easy and more effective, rather than being strenuous. Initially, all machines used to have a square action, so the workout was like that of a robot. But nowadays, the machines are made keeping in mind people's body and spiral structure in mind. So it a lot more natural."

GOING ONLINE
With so many online resources available, fitness has permeated onto the internet as well. Uday and Karuna have started using popular mediums of communication to take their profession forward. "Apart from telephone services through which you can contact instructors, social networks like Facebook have made things really easy. So if there is a new yoga position I want to share, all I need to do is take photos and upload them on Facebook to share it with others."

VIDEO TUTOR
With video tutorials flooding the market today, you must use due caution before trying any postures by yourself in the comfort of your own home. Both Uday and Karuna agree. "If you see something online, you would want to try it out. But it is always advisable to do the same exercise in front of the mirror as well. If you dont have access to a teacher, you can shoot your own video and ask for guidance from an expert. The expert will guide you if your posture is right, because there are small things you need to keep in mind, as they can amount to big

trouble later if done wrongly. You need at least 36 sessions before you go on your own." As for substituting the gym experience with gaming, you can look at options like Nintendo Wii games like Wii Fit. "Its a very good way to burn calories while you have fun. Especially games like tabletennis are very effective and a healthy way to lose weight," says Karuna.

Karuna Waghmare has been in the fitness industry for 14 years, and is the Director of UK Fitness, while Uday is the Assistant Director. Both are certified trainers from Reebok and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Additionally, Karuna holds a certifications from the American College of Exercise, a course on Pilates from the UK, and business and corporate training, while Uday is a specialist in kick boxing and power yoga. Apart from corporate training programs, they also specialize in weight gain, weight loss and diet counseling programs.

PARTING NOTE
If you're considering joining a gym, Karuna and Uday believe that it's never too late. "You have to be fit to look good. But both are not the same. To get a fabulous looking body, you need to exercise, eat well and take a lot of rest. As you age, you need to increase the intensity of your exercise. Ambience is very important for exercising; it boosts your morale".

Achieving peace of mind in the gadget maze


Fitness is incomplete if it's only skin deep. To make sure that you look good, and feel fit, your mind should be fit and positive too. We spoke to psychologist Sonali Gupta on how technology can be used constructively to get the mind healthy.

Clinical psychologist Sonali Gupta agrees. "With companies giving people Blackberrys and other such phones, people have to be accessible 24/7. Since you are accessible all the time, if you get mails even at 11 in the night, you are expected to reply. A few years ago, you would check mail at specific times and be expected to reply only the next morning." It is also true that with technologies like cloud computing and other Internet based utilities, you can work anywhere and anytime. She goes on to add, "With laptops and information available everywhere through the Internet, a lot work gets carried back home. Even when people fall sick, they might still be working from hospitals. People go on holidays with their cell phones and their laptops, and with Wi-Fi available everywhere, right from the airports to the coffee shop, they're working all the time."

CHILD'S PLAY
Children are the most prone to being addicted to any form of technology, be it games, the Internet, television or cell phones. Kids learn to operate these devices fairly quickly and have a tendency to be attracted and eventually addicted to it if due diligence and boundaries are not exercised. Sonali reiterates this point. "With children, a lot depends on how parents monitor a child and how much they are given use of technology. If you let a seven-year-old carry a cell phone to school, it is too early". "A lot depends on the kind of parental monitoring, per se, on what kind of games they play and what they see on television. Yes, it is a lot harder today, especially if the child has access to Internet; they have access to all kinds of sites. If parents substitute TV or video games as a nanny, then it is a problem."

As time passes, technology is becoming more and more part of our daily lives. But it's important to be responsible enough to realize when usefulness turns to dependence. Addiction of any kind is unwarranted, be it alcohol or your cellular phone.

Gadgets like PSPs, iPods, Blackberrys, and laptops are today treated more like toys, rather than utilities. With gadgets getting more accessible, it does contribute to our stress levels as well.

The Internet has been a revelation for every individual, company and profession. Therapists dont want to be left behind, and Sonali is no different. She says, "The Internet has been one of the greatest advantages. It makes it possible to provide counseling to people who are in different cities or countries. It helps especially if the person has moved out to a culturally different location; his problem can be better solved by a psychologist in his home town, who has a better understanding of his environment. In some context, it also helps to come up with alternative techniques for relaxation. Cell phones, in particular, are most beneficially in times of emergencies."

WARNING SIGNS
If the alarming number of suicide cases being reported is anything to go by, it means people dont really pay too much attention to their

mental health and psychological wellbeing. If you are one of those people, and find yourself leaning towards emotional unrest, or if you're unable to handle a situation with due tact, it is time to seek a therapist's help. But at what point should someone ideally turn to a psychologist? Sonali explains, "If a person has been coping with stress for long periods of time or if the problems have continued for a long period of time, they try to resolve it on their own. If they feel they have tried enough and feel there is no way out, it's time to get open to the idea of going to a therapist. It may be too late by then, but then again, not too many people are even open to the idea of therapy. They argue that they are not mad and dont need medical assistance for their state of mind. Therapists or psychologists dont give out medication; it's the psychiatrists who do. Maybe all you need is a different perspective as a solution to your problems."

When you train your mind to focus on a task at hand, you can avoid distraction, Increasing work productivity and concentration on specific things. There are games that also help you better your hand-eye coordination, and sharpen your reflexes. It also helps you make your mind flexible, as you are expected to multitask between a variety of activities. It also boosts you ability to think laterally. Alternative means of therapy


With the quick pace of advancement in technology, even psychological techniques have improved and enhanced over a period of time. Several alternative therapies are now combined for effective results for those with a mind block. Color theory is one such relaxation techniques that have been incorporated using modern technology in bath tubs and sauna baths for home users. If you are in a profession like that, fitness cannot be a chore, but a habit you follow religiously. Bollywood actress Celina Jaitley agrees. "Fitness to me is the perfect harmony and balance of the physical and mental body. The most important meaning of fitness is to have good, vibrant health forever. Besides, having a solid foundation of habits gives you lifelong good body and health." She adds, "My motivation to keep fit is having a healthy love and respect for myself. Being fit is the first step in building self esteem and boosting morale."

Celina feels that a personal trainer is always advisable to have around especially when you are starting off. Having a vast knowledge about what kind of exercises is effective for which body type, their help will make your progress faster. "I have a personal trainer - Sherin, who makes me do everything from yoga to tai-chi to weight training to aerobics to yoga. My fitness routine consists of good eating and good exercise. My exercise routine consists of blending three distinct types of exercises - weight resistance, cardiovascular and flexibility."

BEING FIT AND STAYING POSITIVE


Fitness for me is very important, because since my childhood, I have been an active sports player, in terms of maybe athletics and swimming. Sports has always been a part of my life from a very early age. So my body is very used to playing outdoor sport. But once I started my college life in Mumbai, all that stopped. That's when I hit the gym. Fitness is very important; it puts you, your mind and your body at ease. Fitness also means working out as well as eating right and thinking positive.

GYM VS YOGA
I have been very actively running on the treadmill, and now I am enjoying yoga. Somebody recommended it to me and I have been practicing it regularly for a year now. Now that I've been doing yoga, I love it.

GROWING USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN GYM EQUIPMENT


I think gym equipment has changed tremendously. Today we have some very good quality equipment, and gyms today have machines which are very up to date. I guess it's because people have become so aware of being fit. So I think that's the reason this change has come by, which is great.

GAMING VS PHYSICAL EXERCISE


Gaming might work out for some people, but considering the kind of lifestyle that I've lead from the beginning, in terms of playing outdoor sports, I would still recommend that people go outdoors and exercise instead of sitting at home and give a hand at tennis on the TV or through games. For me, I am more of an outdoor person, so for me even a jog would relax me. Though I've never tried my hand at it, I dont think it would work for me. But if it works for people then great.

HOW DOES IT WORK?


The main Pacer unit is the one that is responsible for communication with the Heart Rate Monitor and Stride Sensor. There is some amount of storage memory in the miCoach Pacer that is used to record all the workout information. You can either attach it to your armband or to your shirt with the help of a clip that is present at the back of the device. You can also use it to listen to your favorite songs via a portable music player. As soon as you open your miCoach Pacer package, make sure that you charge it. Visit the site www.adidas. com/in/micoach and sign up with them. Set up your email account online and select your running plan. Also synchronize your workouts with the workouts on the website.

Next comes the part where you have to get geared up and ready for your first run. Wear the Heart Rate Monitor on your chest using the belt. Attach the Stride Sensor to your shoe. It can be clipped on to your shoe laces. Next you have to clip the miCoach Pacer and turn it on. Select your workout and take to the jogging track. As you run the miCoach Pacer will guide you with audible instructions that let you know when youre going too fast or too slow. This, of course, depends on the type of routine you have selected. Once youre done with your run, get back home, log on to your miCoach account and sync your track progress online by connecting the pacer to the computer.

THE NIKE+ IPOD SPORT KIT


Made for athletes who like to run with music to keep them company, the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit can be used with Nike+ enabled iPods or the 3G iPhones. It comes with all the devices mentioned in the Free Run+ kit but also includes a specially crafted receiver device. The receiver has to be plugged into the charging port of the music player to gather the running information.

HOW DOES IT WORK?


The first thing you need is the Nike+ enabled shoes, indicated by the Nike+ logo located on the outsole of the shoes. Simply hold the the sensor button for three seconds to turn it on. Once the sensor is on, lift the sock liner from the left shoe and place the sensor in the small pocket provided for it. After you replace the sock liner, your shoes are ready for your run. Once your shoes are ready, turn your attention towards the device. On the Nike+ device, press the

center button for three seconds and begin your run after RUN appears on the screen. Clip the device to your arm through the wristband. As you walk or run, the data is sent wirelessly from the sensor to the receiver device, where the data is recorded. The button at the base of the device lets you start, stop, and pause the information being sent during your run. A toggle button on the device enables you to check the details of your run on the device itself so you can track data while youre running. To recover your data from the device, just unplug it from your wristband and insert the device to the USB port of your computer. A free plug-in from nikeplus.com helps Nike+ is compatible with all variants of the iPod you to upload the data nano, the iPod Touch and the iPhone 3G. directly from the device to your account on the website. You will be presented with a graph of your run on a daily basis, giving you a statistical analysis.

USING NIKE+
The Nike+ range of products is not really recommended for beginners, these shoes and gadgets are perfect for fitness enthusiasts, runners and athletes who need to monitor their runs. HOW DOES IT WORK?


The HydraCoach calculates how much water would be needed to satisfy the hydration requirements of a particular person. It sets a hydration goal so that the person using it gets motivated to consume enough water to reach that optimum level. On the front of the bottle is the display/ calculator that helps the user monitor his progress. The first step is for the user to feed his weight into the calculator. Keep the Setup button pressed to receive the option to enter your weight. The weight is recorded in kilograms. Keep clicking the Mode button to change the weight. Once this is

done, click Setup again to set the day. The device then calculates the hydration requirement for the user. If the user is in a warm environment, there is a greater chance of dehydration, so the hydration requirement and be manually set higher than the default setting. After all these settings are done, click Start. HydraCoach begins monitoring the total amount of fluid consumed throughout the day and updates the display accordingly. It also displays the average amount of fluid consumed on an hourly basis. Finally, it tells you how much time has elapsed since you had your last drink.

Technology behind the HydraCoach


The HydraCoach hydration monitor is a small electronic device comprising a low pressure, low volume, liquid flow sensing mechanism linked to an interactive computer/display module. When the unit is inserted between a hydration source and its drinking port, a complete system is created that provides an accurate measurement of fluid intake for proper hydration. The HydraCoach hydration monitor functions by means of Generated Electronic Pulse technology. A magnetized impeller floating within a sealed cartridge is placed in-line with the path of fluid, and in close proximity to a sensor located within the head unit. When the flow of liquid comes in contact with the impeller, it begins to rotate, causing the equi-spaced magnetic elements embedded within to pass the sensor, generating a small electronic pulse. This pulse is transmitted to the microprocessor where a measurement of fluid volume is calculated. The volume of fluid is directly related to the rate at which the impeller spins and these pulses generated. The amount of fluid passing through the system is shown on the display. WHAT IS NSD POWERBALL?


NSD Powerball is a hand gyroscope, which offers a rotating mechanism on a universally mounted spinning wheel that can spin in any direction with little resistance. It helps you tone your fingers and hand, wrist, forearms, biceps and triceps with its rotary motion. All you need is to use the right technique. The NSD Powerball is available in 9 variants that you can pick from depending on the levels of difficulty. They are listed in a table on the following page.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Yank the chord in a single motion to set the rotor in motion. You will see the lights on the ball come on. Start rotating your writs in the direction of the ball. Just use your wrists to change the direction. Your muscles will take some time to get used to the motion. Once the ball is set in motion and it catches speed, it generates quite a lot of counter resistance, so you will have to ensure that you have a firm grip on the ball.

WHEN TO USE?
The Powerball is perfect for anyone who wants to develop their arm muscles. But you should be cautious not to over do it. For beginners, a maximum exercise of 2-3 minutes per hand is sufficient. You can increase the time gradually. For the best results, use it between 6000-8000 rpm for a period of about 7 minutes daily. Also, it is not recommended for people below the age of 15. Kids in the age bracket of12-14years may use it with supervision. If you are unable to set the rotor in motion, check your technique. Otherwise, you can opt for the electric starter called Eezi, which can also run on batteries. This utility will start your gyroscope each time with relative ease. The starter is available in blue and amber colors.

We placed a range of products inside the fridge for eight hours while on the go. The box was packed with ice, a warm soft drink, melted chocolate, ice cream and milk. The ice lasted for 3 hours before turning to water, which was promptly replaced. The ice-cream lasted around 4 hours. The milk and the soft drink remained chilled even at the end of the 8-hour period, and the chocolate had hardened enough to be eaten and enjoyed.

For the purpose of testing, we got our hands on a Mini Fridge 12. This fridge can store up to 12 cans of beverages. All you need to do is fold the bag and place it inside the freezer compartment overnight. To start your diet diary, go to the 'Energy intake and output' tab, and click the 'Energy Intake' button. Select the nature of your meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack) from the tabs appearing at the bottom of the screen. Doubleclick on a food type from the list below. Browse for a food category under the 'Food' section on the right-side panel. Set the amount of food consumed in a 'Unit' of your convenience from the drop-down list. Click 'Yes'. If you dont find the food you have just consumed, you can add it to the list. Click the dropdown arrow appearing next to the 'Energy Intake' button and select 'Own Compound Meals'. Click the 'Add meal' button in the 'Compound Meals' panel of the box. Type the relevant details. Next, click the 'Add meal' button in the 'Compound Meals' panel of the box. Search for the relevant foods that make up your meal and create the meal type. If you cannot find a suitable ingredient for your meals, you can create a new food variant. For doing so, click the dropdown arrow appearing next to the 'Energy Intake' button and select 'Food'. Click the 'New Food' button appearing at the foot of the 'Foods' dialog box. Type the relevant details. Click the 'Yes' button to create the food ingredient for your meals.

WHAT IS BMI?
