1.0 Overview ________________________ This diskette will update the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) firmware and sensor data records (SDRs) only. It will not affect any device drivers. 1.1 a). b). To use this diskette, perform the following steps: Make sure BIOS version 1.00, or later, is installed. Insert this diskette into the diskette drive and restart the system. If your system does not boot from the diskette, use POST/BIOS setup to configure the diskette drive as a boot device. Please refer to the Server Library that was included with your system for additional information. Once your system boots, a ramdrive will be created, the appropriate files will be copied to this ramdrive and the BMC update firmware update will execute automatically. When you are finished using the utility, remove the diskette from the diskette drive and restart your system. Limitations If there is an error in loading the BMC firmware or SDRs retry loading the software by repeating the instructions in section 1.1. Enhancements - IPMI 1.4. Level of Recommendations and Prerequisites for the update: - BIOS version 1.00, or later, must be installed prior to installing this ISMP firmware update. - A full tape backup should be completed and verified prior to running this, or any other system upgrade. - An IPMI driver is required to update the Baseboard Management Controller firmware. Either the OpenIPMI driver can be used or the combination of the OSA IPMI driver and the IBM IPMI mapping layer can be used.

NOTE: On 2.6 kernels, all versions of the OpenIPMI driver are valid. Run "./lflash -c" from a

command line to update BMC on 32-bit Linux or "./lflash64 -c" from a command line to update BMC on 64-bit Linux. 2.3 Step by step instructions for extracting the DOS update files to diskette. - Run the "BladeCenter HS21 (8853) Linux BMC Update" with the following command line: "./<update>.sh -xd <drive>" where <update>.sh is the downloaded update and <drive> is the path to which the Linux update files will be extracted. If <drive> is omitted, /dev/fd0 is assumed.
