Relief Protocol for 30th January 2011 JC2 (1st half of the lesson) Okay, the JC2s would

normally start the lesson with a short paraphrase exercise as practice. Write the following short paragraph on the board and ask them to copy and start paraphrasing it. Passage: Four to five years ago, Dr. Watkins said, young peoples social networks were far more limited. It would have been unimaginable for young people to have their family members as part of their network. Over the last year or so, theres been a lot of concern and frustration expressed towards Facebook, in particular over privacy, Dr. Watkins said. But despite those concerns, not only do people keep using it, but the ways they use it continue to expand. When they kids are done (let them take their time and tell them that they can use their thesauruses), ask them to give you inputs on the answer. If they are really lost about a certain section of paraphrasing, nudge them in the right direction. Okay when that is done, do a slight revision of what was covered last week. Two girls transferred from my Wednesday class and missed the lesson last week regarding the Digital Divide. Do up a simple mindmap on the board with the following as inputs: what kinds of digital divides exist? How can they be tackled? Will there be any problems or limitations in bridging the gap?

Tell the students to copy down whatever new information they have discovered with this simple recall exercise. This entire section should take up the first half of the lesson.

(2nd half of lesson) Introduction to Gender and Sexuality. For this part I would like you to just write the definitions of gender and sexuality of the board for the kids
Gender: the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones): Sexuality: capacity for sexual feelings or a person's sexual orientation or preference:

Ask the kids to verbally tell you what they understand by the definitions and ask them to differentiate the two. Please tell them that gender is a socially constructed label and get them to tell you what they know by the term social construct. Show them the same article given to the JC1s are it has controversial issues inside. Ask them if its possible for the term Man as the new woman to exist. In fact, get them to reflect on situations where such a term can be used. Print appropriate copies of the article for the kids and get them to discuss it with you. After that is done, ask them to write an organised response to the article. This should allow them to spend their time doing their work till the last 15 mins of the lesson. Use the article provided in the previous protocol to make copies. Once they are done, tell them its time for some vocabulary. Write the following words and phrases on the board and get them to tell u the definitions 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) facetious emancipate blasphemy meticulous creates an inescapable tar pit

If time permits, they may do the sentence construction using such words in class. Remember to tell them that they need to construct GP quality sentences. For example: Popular culture has taken a blasphemous stance towards religion in our contemporary society. A perfect illustration would the the songs and videos of Lady Gaga where she is seen abusing the usage of religious emblems and symbols. Yup that would be all
