SEEL ASSIGNMENT - 1

(31090)

A. The behavior of Susan which I approved is that her decision to overstayed summer-break
working at the hospital at Israel. It is more important to help people who are injured in war than getting some bigger number on the score card. I also approved the behavior of Susan when she raised voice against the use of Benzene over the permissible limit. It can cause severe health problems to employee working in the plant. I appreciate that even though she had recently joined the organisation but then also without the fear of the consequences of raising voice against companys wrong policy, she raise this issue up to the level of Personnel Director. The behavior of Susan which I disapprove is leaving her job of Parke-Davis. She took that decision on the basis of action of one employee. She over-generalizes the behavior of one male employee and blames the whole company culture. Leaving a job merely due to ill behavior one employee cannot be justified in any way. Similar thing can happen in any other organisation so it does not mean that resigning from a job is the only ultimate solution. Susan also gave much emphasis on its religion, which too is not appropriate. The way Susan chooses the course she wanted to pursue was also not the appropriate way. She pursued MBA only because she was scared of her anger and thought she can damage chemical lab in anger. Course should be chosen on the basis of interest not on the basis of dislike other course. Susan also inappropriately blames the marketing subject as unethical subject. It is not correct to blame any subject only because you do not like it. It may be true that she got to know about some people who were using unethical means in marketing. But this does not give the authority to abuse all the people in that field. Susan behavior at training trip was also inappropriate. She felt superior to the others who were not from a background of chemistry. Such behavior will only impede her learning and ruin her relation with other colleagues. She should have helped other trainees and build a good relation with them so that in future she could learn from them in the field where they are expert.

B. Susan considers herself capable of doing all things. As in the case of choosing the course, she
was confident about herself that she can pursue any course be that PhD or M.B.A. She prefers to do things which she consider correct. Susan educational background gives her confidence. She develops an attitude toward anything on the basis of small event or observation without

understanding things completely. She directly jumps to conclusion without even trying to understand the whole thing. She always over generalise things. She did not like that any one disrespect her. She does not want to do thing which she consider ethical and even try to stop other from doing it. Susan always had in her mind that people around him were not as intelligent as her and this result in considering herself superior to other. She never discuss thing before taking any decision with any other people. She did not care what people think about her and she do whatever she consider appropriate. But Susan attitude toward world at large is very supportive. She helped people in Israel who are injured in war at the cost of grade. She even did not care about her career when it is matter of human life security. This all signify that although she may be little bit arrogant but she care for society at large.

C. I can understand that Susan is in big dilemma. According to me, Susan should not leave her
job. It is because running away from the problem, does not means that it is solve. It may be possible that in some other company where Susan joins after leaving present job, there also they are doing some unethical practice. Even if she leaves the job then also company will continue its malpractice. So it will do not solve the purpose. Susan should continue the job and she should constantly try to convince company to stop using the chemical above the permissible limit. I can understand that it is not easy but atleast this will give her satisfaction that she put her all effort to stop it. Susan should take it as challenge and try her level best to stop it. Otherwise if she complains to government about the company then it can spoil her whole career. She cannot take any radical decision otherwise it will ruin her life. Leaving the job will be equivalent to ignoring the offence and Susan will be doing nothing different then other employee who are not raising voice against the misconduct. I think she will accept my suggestion because it is the best possible option. This option will help her to fight for what she thinks is correct and gives her satisfaction at the end of the day. This suggestion is given by analysing the situation from all perspective not on the basis only ethical or career point of view.
