1. Explore the relationship between time management and stress management in the context of the statement given The role of leader can be very stressful! Management studies have suggested that these roles include a very wide mix of activities, most of which cannot always be controlled or even predicted. New managers and supervisors - especially supervisors - are almost overwhelmed with the demands of the job. They were probably promoted to be in charge of people, mostly because of their success in a previous role that was focused on developing a particular product or service. Suddenly, they're faced with being in charge of people, which is much less predictable and has much less control than the supervisor had before. Consequently, the ability to manage time and stress is absolutely critical to the success of the roles of manager and leader. A time management means that there is not enough time to get done what needs to get done. A time management is not using your time to your fullest advantage to get done what you want to be done. We may only be doing whats important. Time management require knowing what you really want to get done and if it is getting done or not. Where as many adults dont even know when they are really stressed out until their bodies tell them. Common symptoms of poor stress and time management 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Irritability: Fellow workers notice this first. Fatigue: Many adult notice this. Difficulty Concentrating: We often dont need to just get through the doing. Forgetfulness: we cant remember what we did all day. What we ate yesterday. Loss of sleep: This affects everything. Physically disorder: For example headaches, rashes etc.

The two topics of time management and stress management are often addressed together because they are so closely interrelated Simple Techniques to Manage Stress There are lots of things people can do to cut down on stress. Most people probably even know what they could do. It's not the lack of knowing what to do in order to cut down stress; it is doing what you know you have to do. The following techniques are geared to help you do what you know you have to do. 1. Talk to someone. You don't have to fix the problem, just report it. 2. Notice if any of the muscles in your body are tense. Just noticing that will often relax the muscle. 3. Ask your boss if you're doing OK. This simple question can make a lot of difference and verify wrong impressions. 4. If you take on a technique to manage stress, tell someone else. They can help you be accountable to them and yourself. 5. Use basic techniques of planning, problem solving and decision making. 6. Monitor the number of hours that you work in a week. Tell your boss, family and/or friends how many hours that you are working.

7. Write weekly status reports. Include what you've accomplished last week and plan to do next week. Include any current issues or recommendations that you must report to your boss. Give the written status report to your boss on a weekly basis.

Simple Techniques to Manage Time There never seems to be enough time in the roles of management and supervision. Therefore, the goal of time management should not be to find more time. The goal is set a reasonable amount of time to spend on these roles and then use that time wisely. 1. Start with the simple techniques of stress management above. 2. Managing time takes practice. Practice asking yourself this question throughout the day: "Is this what I want or need to be doing right now?" If yes, then keep doing it. 3. Find some way to realistically and practically analyze your time. Logging your time for a week in 15-minute intervals is not that hard and does not take up that much time. Do it for a week and review your results. 4. Do a "todo" list for your day. Do it at the end of the previous day. Mark items as "A" and "B" in priority. Set aside two hours right away each day to do the important "A" items and then do the "B" items in the afternoon. Let your answering machine take your calls during your "A" time. 5. Learn the difference between "Where can I help?" and "Where am I really needed?" Experienced leaders learn that the last question is much more important than the former. 6. Learn the difference between "Do I need to do this now?" and "Do I need to do this at all?" Experienced leaders learn how to quickly answer this question when faced with a new task. 7. Delegate. Delegation shows up as a frequent suggestion in this guide because it is one of the most important skills for a leader to have. Effective delegation will free up a great deal of time for you. 8. Use a "Do Not Disturb" sign! During the early part of the day, when you're attending to your important items (your "A" list), hang this sign on the doorknob outside your door. 9. Have a place for everything and put everything in its place. That way, you'll know where to find it when you need it. Another important outcome is that your people will see that you are somewhat organized, rather than out of control. 10. Best suggestion for saving time - schedule 10 minutes to do nothing. That time can be used to just sit and clear your mind. You'll end up thinking more clearly, resulting in more time in your day. The best outcome of this practice is that it reminds you that you're not a slave to a clock - and that if you take 10 minutes out of your day, you and your organization won't fall apart. 11. Learn good meeting management skills. Meetings can become a terrible waste of time. Guidelines for good meeting management are included later in this section. Wise Principles of Good Stress and Time Management 1. Learn your signs for being overstressed or having a time management problem. Ask your friends about you. Perhaps they can tell you what they see from you when you're overstressed. 2. Most people feel that they are stressed and/or have a time management problem. Verify that you really have a problem. What do you see, hear or feel that leads you to conclude that you have a time or stress problem?

3. Don't have the illusion that doing more will make you happier. Is it quantity of time that you want, or quality? 4. Stress and time management problems have many causes and usually require more than one technique to fix. You don't need a lot of techniques, usually more than one, but not a lot. 5. One of the major benefits of doing time planning is feeling that you're in control. 6. Focus on results, not on business. 7. It's the trying that counts - at least as much as doing the perfect technique. Connection between time and stress management: Stress is most common cause of aches and pains, as well as time missed from work because stress doesnt just affect us mentally. Its hard on our bodies, too. That overwhelmed feeling many of us have at work and at home is a big source of that stress which is why understanding the connection between time and stress management is so important. Below are some strategies that can help you achieve both. Learn to Delegate: The people who seem the most stressed are the controllers. We may even be one. These have to personally handle everything because no one else is capable of achieving the same standards. As a result, they end being overwhelmed with tasks that could easily be done by their subordinates and that leaves them with less time to deal with the really important projects.

Take Breaks: No matter how much work you need to get done, Its always better to take a break or a walk around the office which dont last for hours but ten or fifteen minutes which keeps you mentally charged and enthusiastic.

Remove Distractions:

The things which distract you such as playing, chatting or internet surfing which sometimes make us enjoy but still with a feeling of plenty of work left do and these cause us more stress even when we enjoy. Hence remove things from your desktop which distracts us. Just focusing on getting your work done and meeting those goals is going to make you feel good and will alleviate a lot of stress. Become a Planner: The stress and time management can be dealt by planning day in advance, by listing what we want to accomplish next day. By this we ll go to bed with sense what needs to be done and will wake up feeling ready to get those things done the next day.

2. Explore your time and stress related issues as a student at TASMAC and compare it with the problems you faced at your work organization. What are the similarities and differences? Job related stress is a widespread problem in the work place today. There are many causes for stress and vary from person to person. We should be aware of stress and try to prevent it before the level of stress increase. It is commonly known that student life can be very stressful. Stress management techniques are plentiful and they must be employed in the organization/institution to ensure that employees/students remain happy and healthy. Stressors in the company should be identified and dealt with so that a company and its employees can operate efficiently and effectively. There are three methods to prevent stress in workplace. Group discussion to be held among Managers and employees so that to get more information and to identify stressors in small companys. In large organization such discussions can be used to help create surveys for gathering input about stressful job conditions from large number of employees. Information should be obtained about employees perceptions of their job conditions and perceived levels of stress health and satisfaction. Data from discussion surveys and other source should be analysed to answer question about a stressor and job condition that may be responsible. One of the best way to reduce stress is exercise. So it is a wise choice to begin an exercise which easily relieves stress. People should follow let go method. People must recognize the difference between the things we can control and the things we cannot. It is wise to make a list of things that often stress us and place them into one of these two categories. Once we have a list we must take a with ourself to stop stressing about the things in our jobs we have no control over. Worrying about those things is useless and it will just cause more stress because we are spending time thinking about it and hanging on it. The concept of job stress is often confused with challenge but their things are not the same challenge both as psychologically and physically and it motivates us to learn new skills and master in job. When a challenge is met we feel relaxed and satisfied. So challenge is important for heavily and productive work. Although learning to manage a stress full job is important. Sometimes it makes more sense to just quit. It is hard to determine when your job is so stressful that you have to leave. If you have tried all recommended methods for resolving your stress with no success, your boss is intimidating, disrespectful or demearing to you, so you are so bored or over worked that your are exhausted by the end of the day or it may be time to quit.

So, as a student of TASMAC, Ive learnt Stress is both a necessary and an unnecessary part of every students life. After all, school life is all about papers, assignments, quizzes, and major examinations. The never-ending information overload would overwhelm just about anyone. Stress is normal and it can help a student keep track of his tasks at school but it only becomes a deterrent to good life when it gets in the way of living a healthy lifestyle. Student life in particular is increasingly becoming more and more complex and difficult with rise in the number of young people opting for higher studies as compared to previous years. The students in fact, never had it so good before. There is a plethora of job opportunities and various new and exciting career avenues which they can take up today. But with all these good things comes responsibility. The responsibility is towards their own self to realize their own potential, to their friends and family and to the society at large. Since the youth today are more confident and seek independence pretty early in life, they also have to cope with the consequences of their own independent decisions and here in lies the challenge to which they must rise. When the students go headlong into the process of being independent without realizing the responsibility that comes with independence, the conflict arises. And this is when the stress kicks in. The balance which is required is missing and then the promises being to break and falter. Sources of Student Stress: There can be a variety of causes for stress among students and you should know that these causes are not much different from general or causes of stress at work. There are inside and outside factors that could easily cause stress and it depends on each individual how this stressors would affect his life. Stress from school workload and the students inability to manage all this work in his allotted time could all lead to stressful student life. In what ways did TASMAC prepare you better for handling time and stress in the world of work? What further steps can be initiated by the Institute? Being a student at TASMAC, Ive learnt a lot about time and stress related issues both as a student and in our surrounding work environment and following are some of the ways according to me to reduce stress at work and some of the steps that can be implemented and initiated by TASMAC in order to prepare us better in handing time and stress at the world of work

1. Understand Roles Be sure you understand your own role and responsibilities in the office wich helps when work is assigned to you. Being new in the workplace you may not know what is needed and expected of you. This can cause delays and hence hamper your efficiency.Have you been given a job scope? If it is a special project for which you have been pulled in, do you know what are the expertise expected of you? Clarify to avoid wasting time. The first time management in the workplace advice is to understand your roles and those of your colleagues.

2. Do The Important And Urgent First The second time management in the workplace tip is to prioritize your tasks at hand. Inevitably, you will be asked to complete a few tasks at the same time. There will also be situations where colleagues or clients would come in with last minute requests. Prioritize your work. Do not overwhelm yourself with too long a to-do list. Many newbies pursuing career success make the wrong assumption that the more they complete at work the better it is for them. This is not necessarily so. Too long a to-do list may cause you to procrastinate on starting the work. 3. Do Not Waste Time One of the biggest mistakes with a to-do list is that there is no time allocated for each task. I often make this mistake early on in my career - a list of to-do things but without an estimated time attached to complete each of them. Hence the list becomes a source of stress at the end of the day. I also realize that it wastes a lot of time. You end up spending too much time on a task that may have needed less time than what you have spent to complete. Time management in the workplace includes being conscious of time robbers. For example, taking long tea breaks, longsmoking breaks, chatting on the phone and surfing on the Internet. Realize that these luxuries have a price tag attached to it your career success. 4. Do It Right The First Time How many times have you seen fellow colleagues fighting mini crisis that can be avoided if only someone gets it right the first time? Whatever you are doing, get it right the first time. Have a high personal standard that says nothing leaves your hand unless you know you have done your best. This time management in the workplace tip while easy to understand, is not easy to practice. Chances are that as a newbie pursuing career success you will have a tendency to rush through your work assuming that speed is a surrogate measurement of efficiency. Not so, quality of work is important too. 5. Do It Now Another common time management mistake for those new at the workplace is procrastination. There are many causes of procrastination. If you feel you have the necessary time management skills but still find yourself procrastinating then you may want to find out the causes and address them. One quick and simple way of time management in the workplace is to do the task immediately. Do not over rationalize and craft the perfect plan. A good plan executed today is better than an excellent plan not executed at all.

Stress at Work: Stress experienced at the workplace is a serious issue because it not only affects the employee, but the organization too. In a recent research, it has been found out that the major reason for absence from work is workplace stress. One of the most important causes that makes an individual feel stressed out in the office is because of the increased pressure to perform without receiving any job satisfaction. Another factor that leads to stress among employees is that their employers expect them to put in their best efforts every single day. Even improper communication between managers and employees about new strategies is reported to be one of the causes of work related stress. Along with these reasons, people who have to suffer workplace bullying, also experience stress. Though the factors or situations that trigger pressure and stress at workplace cannot be controlled by the employees, they can learn to handle them by the way they react to such situations. Therefore, let us look at ways in which we can help ourselves in handling stress at work. Know more about ethical issues inherent with workplace stress.

Steps to Handle Stress at Work: When a person experiences stress and anxiety due to work, he may start feeling irritable and depressed all the time. He may have difficulty in concentrating on the task that he has to do and may also start losing interest in his work. Some people may also experience extreme tiredness and insomnia, apart from other health problems like headache, stomach problems, etc. There have also been cases where people have started drinking or taking drugs to relieve the tension caused by stress at work, leading them to become addicts. As the consequences of stress can be dangerous, learning some important tips for handling stress at work can help employees cope with the work pressure in a positive way. Before you proceed, take a look at these tips on dealing with stress at work. Breathing Exercises: Breathing exercises are a great way of relieving stress and tension. Many times, when trying to complete the work fast, the person becomes anxious which actually hampers his performance, rather than speeding it up. If you come across such a situation, just stop your work for a while and practice some deep breathing exercises for stress relief. You will surely feel better and you will also see improvement in the way you work. Apart from this, learning some stretching exercises that you can do while sitting can also help in decreasing muscle tension and reducing stress. Read more on deep breathing relaxation techniques. Prioritize your Tasks: Many times, stress is caused when you feel that there is lots to do in very less time. Such situations can be easily dealt by prioritizing the tasks according to their importance. Make a list of the tasks you have to complete and bifurcate according to which you have to do immediately, which can be done later and those which can be avoided totally. Also, do not forget to assign a time limit for every task and make it a point to complete it in that time period. Doing this will surely help you in relaxing as well as enjoying your tasks at work. Moreover, if you are at a place where additional responsibilities are bombarded upon you, learn to avoid them by saying 'NO'. Take Regular Breaks: An important way of relieving stress is to take regular breaks while working. To show that you are efficient in your work, you do not need to stick to your desk all the time. Rather, taking small breaks will help in enhancing your performance. You can do things that you like to do like taking short walks, listening to music, reading, etc. to shift your mind from work for a short period of time. Change your Lifestyle: Believe it or not, lifestyle does affect the stress levels of a person. Hence, it is important to make certain important changes in your lifestyle to fight stressful situations at work. One of the most important factor is to follow a healthy diet. Many times, during stressful situations people tend to

10

either lose their appetite or indulge in binge eating. As both these factors are bad for the body and mind, it is important that we learn to eat healthy foods. Apart from this, indulging in exercises like jogging, aerobics, walking, etc. also helps in relieving work related stress. Another important factor that helps in reducing the stress experienced at work is taking ample amount of rest. Do not deprive yourself of sleep and make it a point to sleep at least for 8-9 hours everyday. Identify the Problem: First of all, understand the problem and identify it. Recognizing stress is the first step you can take in order to eliminate it. This involves understanding the symptoms that are affecting you. Depression, erratic mood swings or simple irritation and loss of interest in your personal life are some of the symptoms of stress due to work. Relax and just think about it, you will get the answer. Relax and Learn To De-stress Stress does not strike you immediately, instead it gathers slowly and gradually, and bursts out on you with sudden mood swings and health problems. So, the best way to deal with stress in the workplace, is to take frequent breaks. Now don't confuse breaks with idle time. When you feel you are getting stressed out or burned out, just go out for a short walk or listen to some soft music. If your workplace ethics do not allow you to do these things, then just close your eyes and relax. Stress is more of a mind game, so frequently keep telling your mind and understand the signals it sends out to you. A simple coffee break or talking to the colleagues can just make you feel better. Even if you can just sit silently and give yourself a break from the work, it works. If time allows, a power nap of ten minutes isn't a bad idea. Another idea is to ask for a couple of days of leave from your employer, so that you can rejuvenate and come back with a new vigor and enthusiasm at your work. The reason should be genuine and you must convey it to the employer. If your stress is taking a toll on your health, then better be fit and then return to work. Carry your favorite books, read them to relax or when getting stressed, pen down your thoughts! It would be a sort of catharsis, wherein you release the negative energy building inside your mind. Last but not the least, try to understand the limits of your body and mind and adhere to them. This does not mean that you can't push yourself an extra mile, it only means, just find your balance! Nobody else can do that for you! Yoga and Meditation Exercises have a magical effect on the psyche. It's a scientific fact that mental stress is reduced drastically in the people that follow healthy living techniques. Yoga and meditation have been known to offer a unique solution to the modern age stress. Nothing is more important than your health, so be responsible for it. Talk to Your Seniors Well, we all at some time, feel pissed off at the targets and the deadlines of our work. But the fact is, that stress will always be, and we can't avoid it. However, firms and organizations don't blindly set targets for you. They train you and then give you targets. So, at the core, you must be ready to learn the necessary skills instead of regretting later. If you feel certain projects or tasks need assistance and help of seniors, then don't hesitate in talking to them. Right communication among employees fosters a unity and understanding in the company. Talking out your problems with your seniors is not a bad idea, unless your concerns are genuine and based on facts. A good rapport with your seniors will help you learn from their experiences and they will also feel happy to guide in the tough projects. They may even help you in increasing the team members, so that the task is broken out into small sub tasks. If you have ethical issues inherent with the workplace stress, then it's the right time to talk to your team leaders and tell them your problems. Smiling Costs Nothing

11

It's logical that you can't keep a cheerful face all the time, especially when meeting deadlines, but still, trying to maintain a positive attitude and keeping the spirits of the team members high can elevate the mood of the entire team. Remember, humor is the best medicine ever invented and a simple way to destress.

It is to be remembered that removing stress completely in today's fast paced life is not possible, however, it is possible that we evolve and develop a lifestyle that is natural and healthy. This way, we can tackle the stress at work with full ease. If required, counseling from psychologists and life coaches must be taken. Be cheerful, make good friends at your workplace and keep your professional and personal lives separate. Though, it's not always easy, but still, the motto should be to 'try, try and try, until you succeed'. Tasmac weekend classes are more enriching unlike normal classes in college.
