Question 1
Does stored water ever go bad? A simple experiment provides a clue. Fill a
bucket with tap water and leave it outside for a week. After seven days, algae and
various other life forms can be found in the water. Water stored in an open container is
akin to the water stored in the bucket in the experiment.
Water can also become unfit for consumption due to leachates, that is when
something leaches from the container into the water. One good example is water in a
lead container. Lead leaches into the water and contaminates it. Therefore, it is
important to ensure that the container in which water is stored is made from a food
grade material to prevent leaching problems. Some good examples of such materials
are glass, stainless steel and some plastics. Plastic soda bottles or large 5-gallon
containers specifically intended for water storage are suitable.
There are several methods for storing emergency quantity of potable water for
the purposes of drinking, cooking or brushing teeth. The first step in bottling water is to
clear the water by letting it settle for several hours and the filtering it with a clean cloth.
This removes organic matter such as soil or vegetative debris. Bacteria that have
already bonded to these materials are hard to kill during filtering.
Disinfecting water can be done either through boiling the water, chlorination,
using iodine or exposure to ultraviolet sunlight radiation. Boiling the water for at least
two minutes will kill most disease-causing organisms.

Space exploration has become a hot issue in our country since our first
cosmonaut landed on the moon in 2007. However, space exploration is a debatable
topic since it costs a lot of money. As a science student, would you be in favour of
space exploration or are you against it? Using the information which you have gathered
earlier (as shown in the table below), write a report to your science magazine, giving
your arguments.
Space exploration
Benefits Drawbacks
• Gain more knowledge about the • Programmes and activities cost a lot
universe of money
• Give rise to scientific and • Participating countries need to have
technological developments long term fundings for space projects
- sponsorship necessary
• Applications of space technology • Time consuming – in depth research
can be used in other fields –
communication, defence, geology
• Find other suitable places to live, • Not many people can join the space
in case Earth is one day no longer exploration mission
habitable
You may include any other relevant information to make your report more
comprehensive. Your report should not be less than 200 words.
