CHEMISTRY FOR HUMAN WELFARE PROMISES AND CONCERNS Big Bang theory and the advent of Atom is the

driving force of life. Atom is the basic substance for both living and non living things. Atom is the Origin of science. Mans knowledge of Science can be traced back to the Emergence of Universe and the Origin of Life. Thus Science is the prerequisite for our existence. Interlink age of Chemistry and mankind can be traced backed to our civilization. The first major contribution came from the field of medicine. Innumerable lifesaving drugs were developed for major ailments like diabetes, TB, cancer etc. Robotics along with drug therapy helped in early diagnosis and accurate surgery. Thus continuous research and development in this field can improve the longevity and better standard of life. Green revolution and resultant higher agricultural produce owes its credit to effective nitrogen fertilizers. Present day invention of organic farming is an extension of green chemistry which aims at sustainable development of human mankind. The growth of genetic engineering has enhanced the production of good quality and high yield seeds, drought resistance seeds and high yield livestocks. Cloning is yet another field which sees steady progress and likely to adds immense value to mankind. Invention of Silicon and the subsequent advent of Chip have made our world into a global village. Internet along side the social network has revolutionized the way we live. Invention of Rocket made mans dream of outside world into reality. The first rocket was launched by Russia Sputnik marking the beginning of space age. Remote sensing satellites of India and other countries immensely contributed for weather forecast, agricultural surveys and town planning. Man is thriving to set a permanent footage in the outer space with his steady and continuous R&D. Entertainment industry got a face lift with the invention of optical fibers, LED, LCD, 3D, animation etc. This list goes on. Lets see the challenges faced by mankind faces due to overusing of our inventions Ozone layer life protective shed which prevents the harmful Ultra Violet (UV) rays from entering the earth is depleting at a faster rate due the release of CFC gas from our refrigerators. Post industrialised period world witnessed excess pollution; increased global temperature mainly owing to increased level of greenhouse gases especially carbon dioxide. This leads to acid rain, melting of polar ice shield, raising sea level, uneven distribution of rainfall, drought, epidemic and poverty.

Another important factor is man made disaster starting from Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Bhopal gas tragedy, BP oil spill, and the recent Japan nuclear disaster have compounded the problem of humans. No doubt rapid scientific and technological developments helped mankind to live a highly sophisticated life. But the present day focus of development satisfies the needs of fewer echelons of people as against the mankind in its totality. The consequence of such a pace of development is likely to be disasters, so it is high time to focus on sustainable development for the betterment of entirety our ecosystem. In order to spread this message UN as designated this year as International Year of Chemistry focusing on chemistry and its contribution to human being. Lets live and lets make others live
