Together with all of these clubs we form a division (or what I see more as a family!) called MAGIC KINGDOM, and its the most amazing family you could possibly have of friends in college! Its doing what I love most as a position within Circle K! I plan to work hard to unite our division and make it fun through service, socials, and especially our spirit and cheers! EDITORS

Jennifer Que, President

My name is Jennifer Que, your Orange Coast College Circle K President! Youll often be hearingor rather reading short blurbs from me in our newsletter. In this way, Ill be able to update you on what our club has been doing, as well as inform you all on some past and upcoming events! During our June Magic Kingdom DCM, our club was selected by our LTG as Junes Club Champ based on our achievements such as earning 322 service hours in the month of May alone and taking a huge part in planning divisional projects and socials! AMAZING job, you guys!! In June, our club has helped cancer societies in events, such as the Costa Mesa Relay for Life and the Walk to End Alzheimers. When it comes to service, our Vice President of Service, Ryan Pham, is determined to reach our goal of 2,000 service hours by the end of the summer. Were close to reaching those hours, but we need your help, club members! If you have any questions or concerns, please never hesitate to ask! Its my job to be here for you all and to help you have a great experience in OCC Circle K!

Toodles for now, Jennifer Que Welcome! Bienvenidos! Bienvenue!

My name is Phil Ly, and this is the first issue of the second volume of OCC Circle Ks newsletter, the Squeeze. As some of you may know my predecessor, Jonathan Cao-Nguyen, first started this newsletter about a year ago; and I must say how difficult it is to make a newsletter even decent especially after he set the bar so high with placing second on the district level and first on the international level. This newsletter is designed to not only inform you of what OCC Circle K has been up to and accomplished within the past months but also to entertain, inspire, and motivate my fellow members to come out to more service projects, divisional events, district eventsand even encourage them to take up a leadership position in the future. Im not a man of many words so Ill end this here. I hope you enjoy reading this issue! ^__^

When I woke up to the screaming of my alarm clock on Sunday, April 10th, at around 8:00am, I had forgotten why I had set my alarm so early. Thats when I remembered that I was supposed to chair the Second Sunday in Upper Newports Back Bay service project! I rocketed over to Intouch Suriyaviruns house to give him a ride, and then powered over to the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center. Since we were the first Reid McKee (right) points to something while Gavin Galang (left) to arrive, we headed down to the sign-in area. chuckles as he tosses weeds off to the side. As we waited, more and more people startAs we were digging, Karen XinYi Chung, ed to arrive: the first were high school students, folmade an unpleasant and smelly discovery: lying lowed by a large batch of UCI Circle K members, among the weeds was what appeared to be a dead and finally, some of our own Orange Coast Colrodent. The park rangers told us that because it lege Circle K members started to arriveincluding was part of the natural ecosystem, we couldnt Gavin Galang and Eduardo Ixchajchal! As we bemove it; so we had to very carefully work around gan to mingle with our UCI counterparts, the park it while holding our breath. By far the coolest moranger in charge assigned us to our task: weeding ment of the event was when a young coyote apout non-native plant species. It started out being peared, and everyone immediately dropped what boring, but when we got to hang out with each they were doing to watch it run around for five other, as well as UCI Circle K , it became really fun minutes. It was a first for me because I had never not to mention a few memorable events occurred. seen one during the daytime!

Get Ready, Get Set,

The Special Olympics took place on April 13, 2011 right on our very own track. Being the very first event I chaired for Circle K, it was definitely a good experience. Although this event took place during school hours, it was convenient for both our members and attendees because they were able to come and go based upon their class or work schedules. Two of UCIs Circle K members, Cynthia Huang and Carl Miya, as well as many of our Kiwanians were also at the event with us! At the start of the event, we helped set up the track by putting up canopies, tying balloons all around the track as well as stringing, cutting, and tying the yarn for awards for the athletes. We finished setting up early and still had time left before the actual event beganthus we had plenty of time to bond and take pictures. The ceremony and order of events began at 10:00 A.M. All of us were divided into groups and were assigned an event to volunteer forwhether it was the softball throws, the long jump, or the races. Some of us helped spot where the softball landed while others helped rake the sand for the long-jump athletes. Overall, it was a productive and fun event for all those that attended. We even got a free, delicious hot dog lunch at the end cooked by our Kiwanians!

A Weekend Master Piece!

By Jacqueline Vu Given a hot Saturday morning, most people would spend their time taking a walk in the park, riding bikes at the beach, or hiking up Yosemite; however, were not like most peoplewere OCC Circle K. And we like to spend our days a little differently: like say going to the Paint Your Heart Out event located in Placentia! OCC Circle K members teamed up with CAYP Kiwanis to repaint a house that needed it! Upon arrival, we were given ENORMOUS blue shirts that read, Paint Your Heart Out, to keep our clothes paint-free. Along with our shirts, we were handed a small pail of egg-shell colored paint and a handy-dandy paint brush. There was not a member in sight who wasnt taking the opportunity to make a painting-buddy and paint the sides of the house, doors, wooden staircases, or mailbox. Some painters even looked so concentrated on their work that you would think they were painting a masterpiece to save their life! Aside from painting, some volunteers took it upon themselves to replace the window screens or sweep the driveway. After all sides of the house were completely covered in paint, the window screens replaced, and the floors clear of dust and dirt, we were generously rewarded with boxes of pizza and a special homemade lunch which was kindly provided by the owner of the house. I guess my friend was right to say that food always tastes the best after a day of hard work because there was not a person in sight that was not pleased or dissatisfied with their first bite. Overall, it was a great event that left you with new friends, memories, and the skill of house painting.

CHOC Carnival
By James Lau

A shot from outside the Childrens Hospital of Orange County (or CHOC for short).

Saturday, April 30th. 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Getting up for school isnt easy, and getting up at 6 in the morning is definitely pushing it. The commute to our destination point was nothing spectacular: dull-colored buildings that made you want to doze off, rows of cars on the freeway that were in no particular hurry to drive ahead or cut each other off, and street lights that seemed just as eager as the cars in starting the day off. But these were the circumstances under which I, along with other Circle K members, committed to today wasnt about us or our preferences for sleeping in. Now what, might you ask, were we doing this early in the morning? Today was the day that aimed to brighten lives of patients of the CHOC Hospital as well as their family. The CHOC Carnival was sure to be a blast. Upon arrival, I watched as numerous members from Circle K, Key Club, and Kiwins as well as Kiwanians all gathered excitedly to help set up and guide the process in preparation for the big event. Right at the start, Mr. Golden, the Region 3 advisor, informed us that our goal was not to conserve and hog all the prizesbut rather the opposite: the fewer prizes we have at the end of the day, the better. We WANT the participants to leave with the prizes we have to offer. With that in mind, Id say that our day went highly successful. The thought of childrens smiles as well as their joy in playing the minigames and winning prizes was something we all strived for. Fellowship Extras Resources

MARCH OF THE BABIES!!!

By Sam Trinh Okay, so there werent really any babies marching nor has the world been taken overrather it was more along the lines of people running and jogging for the cause of babies. March of Dimes or March for Babies was 5 miles of running, jogging, or walking (and in some cases strolling) for the participants to raise money to help fund research that will potentially help mothers and their babies. As a part of OCC Circle K, we were in charge of checkpoint 3, which was located at the 3rd mile mark of the walkathon. At the checkpoint, we had orange and banana slices as well as water bottles for when the walkers passed by. The turnout was amazinglets just say that by the end of the walkathon, Eduardo Ixchajchal (left) and Sam Trinh we had no bananas nor oranges left, and there were barely a handful of water (right) each hold a tray of oranges slices to give to bottles leftmind you this was only one checkpoint of five. So the turnout was the tired walkers for their replenishment. outstanding! After the last walker crossed the finish line, everyone was invited to join in the festivities near the finish line. There was free food: a Wienerschnitzel truck was serving hot dogs, Key Clubbers were serving snow cones, and plenty of cotton candy and popcorn for everyone. And there was even a band performing LIVE. Additionally, there were also booths giving out free bags and pens as well as an area for kids to play in: rock climbing, HULA HOOPS, and JUMPHOUSES! Overall the event was super fun and its always good to help out such a great organization, such as March of Dimes, that further progress mothers and babies alike.

LXM PRO
By Rachel Le Sunday, June 5th, 2011 was the event LXM Pro, which was about professional lacrosse players who came to OrFrom behind the window, Mike Sur ange Coast Colleges football field to play and Stephen Pino (far back) are hanin an all day event. It started from 10 am dling the payment and ticketing prountil 10 pm at night. We had various jobs cess. that day: guarding the doors, monitoring the entrances and exits, managing the ticket tables and wristbands. Being on of the people who managed wristbands, my job was fast paced but very funquickly receiving tickets and handing out wristbands in exchange. Sometimes I even made conversation with the attendees and helped them put on their wristbands Colin Wu (left) and Patrick Jun- (for the majority of them). pradub (right) are checking wristbands Throughout the day, we got FREE before admitting spectators inside. monster drinks that were ice tea flavored and perfect for the hot day! Additionally, I got free socks, stickers, shoelaces, lanyards, and even free food from my services. Shwayze and Cisco had a concert towards the end of the event! Although I didnt get to see them perform, I later helped clean the stage they performed on and received this music list from them! It was so cool. At the end of the night, we (OCC Circle K members) stayed for an extra hour to help clean up and direct traffic; however, people kept disobeying our orders and got so mad at us because they wanted to take a shortcut out. There was a hilarious moment when some lady tried to call out Christine Nguyen until a supervisor came and told the lady off. After cleaning up everything, we were standing around waiting to be cleared; basically we all just bonded, and it was great.

CHILDRENS CENTER CLEANUP

By Stephanie Nguyen The Childrens Center on Orange Coast Colleges campus is a wonderful resource that provides students who are also parents with reliable childcare. It is one of the most successful and well-run services on campus, and the center itself is award winning. OCC Circle K has been helping out for a few years now and a lot of planning is involved in ensuring that the day is both productive and fun for the volunteers who attend. Being part of the committee this year was an exciting opportunity because it would be one of my last projects at OCC before transferring to a university. I really wanted to stay involved as much as I could because I would truly miss being part of OCC Circle K. The committee had representatives from both Circle K and the two high school Key Clubs: Costa Mesa and Estancia. The committee got together a few times to finalize details of the days events, and we couldnt believe how fast the day approached. We started off the day eating a delicious breakfast made by the staff at the Childrens Center and then were divided into several groups and assigned various tasks. My group was in charge of sanding and I must say that I took home a lot of dust and sand with me that day. Other groups were reorganizing the supply closets, painting the fences, cleaning out the sheds, or painting shelves. We all had our respective tasks and worked diligently to improve the look of the Childrens Center in a matter of hours. While we were working hard outside, Jonathan Cao-Nguyen, Rachel De La Torre, and Reid McKee were working hard inside the kitchen to prepare lunch for everyone. Their hard work really did pay off because they made such an amazing lunch that there was hardly any leftover! The committee had also planned an activity for the volunteers, where each group had to make up a skit Kimberly Van and Matthew Richaccording to their theme. ards are re-varnishing the weatherSome themes included: torn garden fence. Lady Gaga, Pokemon, Superheroes, Medieval Times, and Dinosaurs Each group had about 10 minutes to think of a skit before performing it in front of everyone. The committee judged each group on creativity, storyline, and effort. In the end, the Medieval Times group came out victorious! Each group member received a prize and the days activities were ended with an enormous thank you to the staff of the Childrens Center and the volunteers who spent their Saturday helping out. It was a longbut rewardingday and still is one of my favorite projects ever.

Relay for Life

Kids OCean day
By Phil Ly On a cloudy Saturday morning, I rolled out of bed and headed straight to the car without any food or a combing my hairjust to pick up Alan Chung from his house before finally heading out to the beach. We were the first to arrive there while the Coastguard Keepers group was setting out breakfast: granola bars, fruits, coffee, orange juice, and many other small item breakfast snacks. Eventually, the rest of OCC Circle K dawdled in just as registration and location assignments began. I was assigned to be the volunteer coordinator of the group who oversaw the children from Sunkist Elementary (named just like the orange flavored soda); now these are children from Southern California that have never been to the beach nor seen its vast waters before. With my group, we headed out to the parking lot to wait for the bus filled with excited childrenhowever, bus after bus after bus our excitement became watered down. Nevertheless, it simply came late and rushed through the orientation with the kids because this was a smart bunch who already knew why it is important to keep the ocean clean. After handing them gloves and trash bags, they ran onto the sands picking up whatever colored plastic, cigarettes butts, and other trash they found. Around noon, we headed to the aerial art area in a single-file line and proceeded to sit in the sand, forming part of the shape of a flounder. A small blimp came by and took a picture from the aira proud achievement for both the volunteers and the kids!

Jennifer Que (far right) helps the children enjoy their first day at the beach by helping them make a sand castle.

With over 850 kids and 100 volunteers sitting in the sand, this smiling flounder and its catch phrase was recreated and shot with an aerial camera.

BOYS HOME RENOVATION

By Matthew Lee
Rachel De La Torre (left) is reading assembly instructions while Phil Ly (right) is putting the furniture together. Jonathan Cao-Nguyen and Lauren Kim are finishing assembly of a drawer from IKEA for the boys.

As I drove up to the nice and comfy looking home that I was going to help prepare for children in need, I took a moment to reflect on the scenery along the way. Warm and inviting California weather tagged along with a friendly neighborhood seemed like the ideal environment for boys who needed a safer and better livelihood to study in. Knowing that these children in need were going to have a chance at a good education, provided all the motivation I needed to work hard. Personal anecdotes aside, the Boys Home Renovation Project was a wonderful event in which Circle K members from Orange County/Irvine areas collaborated with Kiwanis members. This was a demonstration of their love for kids who were from low-income families and needed an escape to a more hospitable environment. Chaired by project member, Julie Nguyen, and OCC Circle K member, Rachel De La Torre, this event certainly showed how on top of things OCC was in regards to Orange County projects. Although the sound of such raw manual labor sounds unappealing, roughly eight of our Circle K members attended this event and brought a lot of help to the renovation project. Of course, OCC wasnt the only school that went

to this event since this was an interclub event. Many people from other Circle Ks arrived too, such as Saddleback, UCI, and Fullerton. With so many Circle K members working together hand and hand the dastardly confusing IKEA furniture instruction booklets were no match for their combined effort. Spackling holes in ceilings, assembling drawers with limited screwdrivers, and shooting the breeze over In-N-Out turned out to be precious moments; in which stronger bonds were formed amongst members of our own club and others. It is in this writers opinion that the Boys Home Renovation Project was a gem of an event and a real miss for people who didnt go. A real rarity it is, that a project that requires so much hard work ended up being so much fun and rewarding. Interclub events like this one really help one feel a sense of accomplishment, and it is advisable for people who missed out to go to the next interclub service project!

From OCC to the District

Jonathan Cao-Nguyen (AKA J-Cao) was the Immediate Past Secretary for OCC Circle K and has been elected to serve as the 2011-2012 District Secretary for the Cali-Nev-Ha District. Even as he transfers to UCSD this Fall as a Biochemistry/Chemistry major, our club will not forget the hours upon hours of hard work and dedication that he put into our club--making it the success that it is today.

Ruben Ruiz was the Immediate Past Vice President of Administration for OCC Circle K and has been chosen to serve as the 2011-2012 District Awards Chair. As an incoming Sociology major with a minor in Global Poverty and Practice at UC Berkeley, he has a lot in store for the upcoming year but is always willing to help out those who ask--an admirable characteristic that was detrimental to the development and growth of our club.

Congratulations to the following OCC Circle K members for applying and successfully getting into the 2011-2012 District Committees:
1) Stephanie Nguyen: MD&E, Awards 2) Lauren Kim: MD&E 3) Alan Chung: DCON 4) Colin Wu: DCON 5) Michelle Nation: DCON

You Got TRAINED!

By Jennifer Que

Its Raining...AWARDS!
By Tracie Ly When I joined Circle K International, I did not expect to receive any sort of recognition for the community service I have done. When I received the invitation to the United K Awards, I was quite taken back that the Kiwanians took their time to appreciate the effort and dedication that we have put into our community. What was most memorable about that night was not the awards that we had receivedbut rather the time we shared together. There was a lot of laughter that day and Im pretty sure I can speak for everyone when I say the food was quite scrumptious. Why else would some of us go back for a third or fourth time? Jeff Dimsdale talked about the various awards that were given out. The most prestigious of them all was the Student Leader of the Year award. This award was given to our very own Christine Nguyen (immediate past President), Stephanie Nguyen (immediate past Membership & Development Education chair), and Kelly Ho (immediate past Kiwanis Family chair). Im thankful to have met these three wonderful individuals who have helped build OCC Circle K to the club that it is today. Also, I would like to thank everyone who made the United K Awards possible and huge thanks for those who came. Keep up the fabulous job, OCC Circle K!

Alan Chung holds up the sign for the Magic Kingdom Trainer with the divisonal flag waves in the background.

A cloudy morning with our flag waving in the wind. As we sit and wait, some of us nervously wonder what lays ahead on our journey, and before we know it, it is time for the heroes of the nations of Cal State Fullerton, Irvine Valley College, Saddleback College, Whittier College, UC Irvine, Chapman University, Santa Ana College, and of course Orange Coast College, to rise--and train--to protect our Kingdom. Magic Kingdom. Okay okay, so Ive been reading too much into the Guild Wars world lately, but in the early morning of Saturday April 2, 2011, Orange Coast College Circle K was proud to host the 2011 Magic Kingdom Divisional Trainer, an opportunity for our division to come together and, through a series of workshops, learn about our jobs as Board members. We had a taste of what our responsibilities would be through the workshops at District Convention, but now as a division, we were going to get the guidance, wisdom, and experience from our own family, from our own division. As the training day began, our regional advisor Armando Velazquez welcomed us and shared a few minutes of the history behind the Magic Kingdom Trainer, ending with an introduction to the workshops along with their hosts. Each of us were to attend three workshops: one directly following Armandos speech (a workshop hosted by California Young Professionals Kiwanis Club member Ronald Liu), and two workshops of our choice. How would I sum up the event in a few words? Leadership and responsibility. Many of the attendees had already been installed on the Boards (both Executive and Appointed), but OCC wanted to go even further. The Executive Board and I welcomed anyone from our club who was interested in joining our Appointed Board to attend the trainer with us. As a result, our members were able to enhance their leadership skills whether they were appointed to the Board or not. Also, as a division, we realized how much responsibility it would take to succeed in our jobs. After I left the Presidents Workshop, I realized that there was so much I needed to do as president, things that I never knew before, but that sense of responsibility also served--and continues to serve--as the force driving my determination to make our club grow stronger. A day of workshops, meeting people, fun, and more!

Spring Training Conference (or STC) is one of Circle K Internationals annual leadership training conferences that is held in the spring just as the new Circle K year begins--the first opportunity for the newly elected and newly appointed club officers to get a feel for what it is like to be a leader. There are actually two STCs: one in Northern California (for the unviersities and colleges up north) and one held in Sothern California. This year, STC South took place at Calfornia State University Fullertons Titan Student Union--each aspect of the day followed the overall theme of Pac-Man: the design of the programs, the names of the rooms had been changed, and even the games and raffles required knowledge of the franchise.

What is STC?

Opening Session

After registration, everyone took their seats in the large auditorium eagar to hear what was in store for the day. Immediate past District Service Chair, Natalie Platon, gave the opening address and then an overview of how the entire day would go: workshops, lunch and an icebreaker, more worksshops, DCMs, and then ending with a closing Q&A session by the District Board.

Throughout the day, you can attend various workshops that will teach you valuable leadership and personal skills or take a break from learning in one of the activity workshops. Whether you want to learn interview tips for your next job, a new dance move, or how to stay active in Circle K over the summer, there Paul Jessup and Karen Truong (UCI) Tina Nguyen (left) is acting out a are practicing on how to properly tie a tie is a workshop for everyone! hilarious pan left, pan right scene in the

Yum-tastic Yogurt!
By Rachel De La Torre
Yes, you read that correctly, I said, Yum-tastic as Circle Kers from CSULB come out and support. Our Yogurt, and that is in reference to the Yogurtland Fun- club received 20% of each purchase for customers who draiser we held on May 26th said that they were there for OCC Circle K. At the end in order to raise money for adof it all, we raised a humble ministration funds. It was definitely a sweet treat as it was amount of $21.49 (since Yoafter spring finals week, and gurtland is pretty inexpensive to begin with). I thought Yogurtland sure sounded delicious. It was an awesome way it was a good first fundraiser for the new term, and its just to start the summer! Everyone the beginning to bigger and was encouraged to come out and pig out on their favorite better fundraisers. Plus, a BIG yogurt topped with a mounthank you, gracias, and merci tain of cavity-causing sweets. to everyone who came out and supported OCC Circle K! We had members from all over Magic Kingdom as well

Theme: Fairly Odd Parents

In case you havent heard, OCC Circle Ks 2011-2012 theme is Fairly Odd Parents. From our t-shirts to the non-traditional scrapbook to the website--and yes, even this newsletter--will be featuring elements from the popular cartoon series. You will notice that the magic wands, the colors, or even the floating crownie things through the entire issue--keep a look out for them!

Kelly Ho, Thank you so much for all the help you've given me and the continued help. You're. Great leader, and a wonderful friend. Although many and myself thought you were an angry person that wanted pop tarts all the time, getting to know you, I got to see you were just an angry person that wanted wheat thins not pop tarts. I'm just kidding. But really, you are a selfless sweetheart and I really wish you the best. You're a very close friend to many of us here in circle k and glad that you are staying for one more year. Where ever you choose to go next, you will devour, and own. I am glad to have you as a leader, mentor, and friend. P.s. admit it. You love Selena Gomez's song "Who says"

Peachy-Lime Sorbet : A Summer Treat

Ingredients:
-1 1/2 cups water -2/3 cup sugar -2 tablespoons light corn syrup -1 pound fresh peaches, halved and pitted -1 teaspoon freshly grated lime zest -6 tablespoons lime juice -1/4 teaspoon salt

Tips:

--Always smell peaches to make sure theyre sweet. --If you dont have peaches, you can also use nectarines. --Lime zest comes from the green peel of the citrus and must be fresh!

Directions:

1. Stir water, sugar and corn syrup in a large saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. 2. Add peaches; bring to a simmer. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes. 3. Pour the fruit-syrup mixture into a blender. Add lime zest, juice, and salt; blend until smooth. 4. Pour into a large bowl and refrigerate until cold (about 4 hours).

5. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze until solid (about another 4 hours). 6. Unmold cubes, place half in a food processor fitted with the chopping blade, and process, scraping the sides as necessary, until fairly smooth but still icy. 7. Repeat with the remaining cubes. 8. Put it into a bowl, take out a spoon, and enjoy your treat!
