The seniors on the
Chapin football squad feel
as though they finally have
reached dry land.
After wading through
three coaches in three sea-
sons, the Eagles expect to
gain ground in their second
campaign under coach Jus-
tin Gentry.
Its the first time weve
had the same playbook for
two seasons, and I feel like
were in a much better state
than last year, senior wide-
out Matthew Hite said.
Last year, coach Gentry
wasnt able to spend the full
spring and summer with
us, but this year it has been
easier to get ready knowing
what to expect and know-
ing that hes got our back.
Gentry said earning the
players trust is crucial to
improving the teams re-
sults.
This group of seniors
are fine leaders and pretty
good football players, but
its been hard for them with
all the changes they have
gone through, Gentry
said. We spent a lot of last
season working to gain that
trust, and by now there is a
sense of identity. And weve
created a bond that makes
this season much different
than the last.
Though they have con-
sistency in the coaching
staff and with the system,
the Eagles lost plenty of tal-
ented players to gradua-
tion. But several key play-
ers return, including lead-
ing tacklers Ryan Moore
and Devin Lawrence and
offensive lineman Mason
Zandi.
We lost a lot of weap-
ons, Gentry said. Weve
got a lot coming back, but
theyre young. Our youth is
going to show early, but
once we get the game expe-
rience, well be as good as
anybody in our region.
Last season, the Eagles
started region play with
three losses. But they fin-
ished tied for second in Re-
gion 3-3A and wound up
with the No. 3 playoff seed;
they lost in the first round.
This year, Gentry is trying
to get the Eagles in position
to capitalize on a wide-
open region.
There is no clear-cut
No. 1right now, and it could
be us, he said. The Clin-
ton game, thats going to be
a key game for us, how we
respond to that first region
game.
Gentry said he has not
spoken to the team about
goals, but the objective is
clear to the players.
I dont strap on my
cleats for any reason but to
go for the state champion-
ship, Zandi said. I expect
us to play our best every
week, and we are working
hard to put it together.

Coach Kemper Amick
could not ask for much
more.
His 2011 Columbia Cap-
itals return firepower
from last seasons offense,
plus stronger, faster line-
men. They have confi-
dence and consistency
and should be one of the
top teams in Region 3-2A.
Quarterback Ky Tyler,
running back Justin Mull-
er and wide receiver Casey
Gladney are the corner-
stones of an offense that
averaged 32 points per
game last season. The of-
fensive front has changed,
but for the better, Amick
believes.
Senior William Harris
moved from guard to cen-
ter, and juniors James
Works and Michael Har-
riot are new on the line.
Were younger up
front, but bigger and prob-
ably more athletic, Amick
said. Because of that, this
year well be more spread
than we have been on of-
fense before.
Amick looks forward to
seeing what Tyler, Muller
and Gladney can do. The
three, who have been
starting intermittently
since 2008, worked hard
in offseason conditioning,
Amick said.
Anybody we play has
been impressed with those
guys, and they have just
gotten better, he said.
Tyler is excited about
the possibilities.
We are so much more
athletic this season, I
know well make more
plays, said Tyler, who al-
so will see playing time at
defensive end.
The Capitals fell one
touchdown short of the
Upper State final in 2010
and finished 8-5.
Thinking about that
Woodruff game, the heart-
breaker, and going out in
the third round (of the
playoffs), that makes us
want to do better, Glad-
ney said.
But there is one thing
Amick would add to his
wish list: good health.
Staying injury-free is key
for the Capitals, who have
seen their postseason ef-
forts mired by injuries to
playmakers.
Everybody feels fresh
and ready to go, Amick
said. Weve done OK in
our scrimmages, and we
feel pretty good right
now.

ROSTER
After losing five starters
from its offensive line, Ir-
mo will have a high hurdle
to clear this season if it is
to make another playoff
run.
Weve got some good
kids up there, said coach
Bob Hanna, whose team
averaged more than 400
yards of offense per game
last season. They are
young and they got some
experience last year, but
they are still learning.
But Hanna is confident
that the offense, especially
the running game, will re-
main strong while two
quarterbacks vie for the
starting position.
Most importantly, he
said, were not going to
drop off at all in the run-
ning back position. The
line may be a challenge at
first, but I still think Mar-
cus (Smith) will put up
some good numbers and
keep the running game
moving.
Smith, a senior, made
three starts and notched
over 600 yards last season
subbing for injured starter
Dawan Scott. The latest in
a long line of strong backs
at Irmo, Scott neared the
2,000-yard mark despite
his missed time. Smith is
confident he can sustain
that level of production.
Were really trying to
match last year, and even
though the line is new, I
just keep motivating them
and encouraging them,
Smith said. They are get-
ting stronger already, and
the better they get at their
job, the more I am going to
be able to do.
We are working hard
in practice, and I think Ill
be able to find room (to
run) even if we have prob-
lems early.
Hanna said the key for
Irmo early is getting cover
from an experienced de-
fense.
Weve got to be the
ones that set the bar, not
let the other team score, so
that our offense can play
with a cushion, senior
linebacker Matt Dickert
said. Weve just got to
work that much harder,
but its OK, because well
do whatever we need to do
to help us win.
Though the Yellow
Jackets are a fixture in the
postseason, defensive
lineman Kendrick Mines
said they are not taking
anything for granted.
We like to win, and we
have that expectation, but
we know that we cant
take any team for grant-
ed, he said. We are going
to have to be prepared for
every game.
The Yellow Jackets
have a tough early slate
following a competitive
scrimmage schedule.
August is a difficult
month with the teams
were going to face, but
weve just got to learn
from our mistakes without
dropping our heads,
Hanna said.
Irmo is not without mo-
tivation.
Our goal is always to
be the best football team
in the state, Hanna said.
Were a long way from
that now, and I think the
kids realize that. Thats
why they are working so
hard out here.

Dutch Fork could see
the mountaintop in its first
season under coach Tom
Knotts. The next step is
reaching it.
The Silver Foxes re-
bounded from a 2-9 outing
in 2009 to post a 10-3 rec-
ord in 2010 that included a
trip to the second round of
the Class 4A Division I
playoffs.
It was a difficult loss to
Byrnes; we really felt like
we could compete with
them and win, said
Knotts, whose team fell to
the eventual state-champi-
on Rebels in the postsea-
son.
After that turnaround,
the Silver Foxes offense
took some big hits. Dutch
Fork lost dual-threat quar-
terback Justin Suber, who
accounted for 1,500 pass-
ing yards and nearly 1,000
rushing yards. C.J. Can-
non, a tight end/wide re-
ceiver who provided op-
tions in the passing game,
also is gone.
Brandon Quattlebaum
was slated to start at run-
ning back after topping
1,200 yards rushing and
scoring 21 touchdowns
last season. But he was in-
jured in a preseason out-
ing and might be out until
region play begins.
Thats tough, because
everything was going to
run through him, Knotts
said.
Instead, Dutch Fork is
working with an offense
with a lot of potential, but
it has a ways to go.
On the line, senior
Chase Williams leads a
mostly new crew, and
Clayton Little and Derek
Olinchuk are dueling for
the quarterback position.
Little gained starting ex-
perience last season when
Suber was out with inju-
ries, but Olinchuk has had
strong performances in
scrimmages during camp.
Jordan Berry and Shaq
Price will be the primary
receiving targets, and
Knotts said he is looking
for Chad Geter to become
a versatile tight end in the
mold of Cannon.
But the best news for the
Silver Foxes is on defense,
where the linebacking
crew and backfield remain
sturdy. Top performers
Paul Bynoe, Jared Pryor
and Brett Shore return.
Our defense is basical-
ly intact, Knotts said. Im
not sure why it isnt click-
ing yet, but maybe it will
all come together on Fri-
day (for the opener against
Irmo).
We had a great offsea-
son, our summer work
was great, but we havent
had a great preseason on
offense or defense. The
encouraging thing is we
look good on paper. We
just have to get it to be on
the field as good as it looks
like we should be on
paper.
