Year 6 Curriculum Newsletter 1


Thursday, 18 August, 2011 Dear Parents of Year 6 students, Periodically throughout the year we will be providing you with details about the Year 6 program to enable you not only to be aware of what is going on in the Year 6 classrooms, but also to enable you to better support your childs learning at home. We hope that you find this information useful. We greatly value parents taking the time to discuss educational and current event issues and with their children. Our current unit really lends itself to some great discussions please feel free to engage your child in discussions about issues related to organisation and how to be organised. Please see the details below: UNIT OF INQUIRY: How we organise ourselves Central idea: Being organised empowers us to achieve Key Concepts: Function, Responsibility Related Concepts: Organisation, Independence, Empowerment Lines of Inquiry:

The organization of self and groups Organisational tools, attitudes and actions that determine success The relationship between organization and achievement

Things you may wish to discuss with your child may include: How you and your family organise your lives The tools and strategies you and your family use for organisation The relationship between organisation independence In this unit students will be inquiring into many different things including photographic and presentation skills; organisational skills and how this assists the development of independence; goal setting; and organisation structures in the community.

Each class will be running its own Language Arts program, but you will find common elements amongst the classes as they develop skills in reading, writing, speaking & listening and viewing and presenting. Students in all classes will be investigating how language is organised and similarities and differences between different written and literary styles. In Mathematics the students will be involved in a range of integrated activities related to mental calculation; place value and larger numbers; number systems used by different cultures; decimal fractions; location, mapping and scale; data collection; classification of shapes; and problem solving skills. Year 6 Camp Meeting We will be holding an Information Evening for Parents and Students to more fully explain the program and expectations for our annual camp at Kanchanaburi. The date of this meeting will be: Tuesday September 27th, 5.30 6.30pm in the school theatre Please put this important event on your calendars now so that you are able to attend.
