1. Land and Climate

Location and Area: The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is located in the far west and southwest part of the United Arab Emirates along the southern cost of the Arabian Gulf between latitudes 2240 and about 25 north and longitudes 51 and about 56 east. The total area of the Emirate is 67,340 square kilometers, representing some 87% of the total area of the UAE. The territorial waters of the Emirate embrace about 200 islands off its 700 km coastline. The topography of the Emirate is dominated by low lying sandy terrain dotted with sand dunes exceeding 300 meters in height in some areas southwards. They provide habitat to the sparse vegetation cover that characterizes the region. The eastern part of the Emirate borders the western fringes of AlHajar mountains. Jebel Hafeet mountain, Abu Dhabis highest elevation, rising about 1,300 meters above sea level is located South of Al-Ain city. Climate: Abu Dhabi has a tropical, semi-dry climate, with hot summers, warm winters and scanty rainfall. The weather is sunny for most of the year, with high temperatures and relative humidity in summer, especially in coastal areas, while winter temperatures are generally warm but occasionally fall to lower levels. Two types of winds prevail in the emirate, namely, dry northerly winds in winter which helps to ameliorate the weather, and the brief, extremely hot south easterly winds. Occasionally, non- seasonal southerly to south easterly and westerly to north westerly or northerly winds blow across the Emirate. Average Minimum Temperature (0c) 21.4 29.9 % 46 33.1 76.3% 1009.23

64 I Statistical Yearbook 2009

Health services in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi experienced a remarkable development and expansion, both quantitative and qualitative, in 2008. This is evident from the rise in the number of hospitals and health clinics in the emirate to 37 and 196, respectively. Relevant data for 2008 also point to an increase in the number of health professionals and in the resources available at health facilities. In this regard, the number of doctors grew to 5,299, and the number of hospital beds reached 3,546. During 2008 the Emirate of Abu Dhabi provided 750,881 vaccinations for various diseases. 6. Security and Justice

72 I Statistical Yearbook 2009

Data on civil defense and judicial services are key indicators of the Emirates efforts to bring greater security and stability to the society. Such data help to demonstrate the extent to which justice is served in the society and the standard of protection, safety and security enjoyed by members of the community. This is done by monitoring the speed and accuracy practiced in deciding on lawsuits, enforcing court rulings and judicial decisions and orders, endorsement of contracts and other documents, referring of accused to relevant courts, protecting public rights and interests and protecting peoples lives against fire, road accidents and all sorts of hazards. 100 I Statistical Yearbook 2009

Abu Dhabi Emirate is one of the worlds major producers of oil, which was discovered in commercial quantities for the first time in 1958. Since then the Emirate has been able to achieve remarkable progress in the investment and development of its oil and natural gas resources. The Emirate now ranks the sixth worldwide in terms of proven oil reserves, sits on 10% of the worlds oil reserve and accounts for 8% of OPECs production. The Emirate also ranks the seventh worldwide in terms of natural gas reserves. Oil revenues constitute the main source of funding for Abu Dhabis programmes of sustainable development and income diversification. The value added of this activity contributes more than 60% of the Emirates GDP, leading the Government to adopt a plan aiming to diversify the economic base and reduce this ratio to 36% by 2030, since such diversification offers a true guarantee of a balanced and sustainable development. Currently there are 6 companies operating in the extraction of crude oil and natural gas in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in addition to one company operating in the area of refining and petroleum products, two companies operating in the production and export of liquefied natural gas, two companies specialized in the production of petrochemicals, one company operating in the sale and distribution of petroleum products and 6 companies engaged in oil and gas services. This chapter contains statistics on oil and natural gas production and exports, petroleum products and statistics on and petrochemical products , which represent a strategic option for diversification of the economic base and income sources. 11. Water and Electricity

110 I Statistical Yearbook 2009

Since March 1998 the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) has become the higher supervisory authority regulating the water and electricity activity in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and implementing government policies in this regard. The Government accords special importance to this activity, being one of basic constituents of the infrastructure. It to be noted here that privatization of this activity has had a clearly favorable impact in enhancing its productive efficiency. There are currently seven companies producing electrical power and desalinated water. The government fully owns two of them and has a 60% stake in the remaining five. The said companies operate 17 power and desalination plants. There are also four ADWEA affiliates dealing with water supplies and power transmission and distribution. This chapter presents statistics on the production and consumption of electricity and desalinated water. Electrical Energy Generated (MWH) 34,452,127 26,786,967 15.33 172,565.33 172,099 239

17. Consumer Price Index

150 I Statistical Yearbook 2009

This chapter contains the results of monthly CPI calculations for the year 2008, setting 2007 as the base year. The CPI basket items and their weights were updated on the basis of the 2007/2008 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES). In the new updated CPI both the weights and the base year prices refers to the same period (i.e. 2007). In the old CPI basket, the base prices represent the year 2000, while weights dated back to 1997. Calculation of the updated CPI estimates has revealed the following results: The CPI for the year 2008 (2007=100) was 114.88, i.e. the inflation rate for the year is 14.88%. Upon exclusion of the Housing Rentals group from CPI calculations, the following results were obtained: The CPI for the year 2008 becomes 115.14. Accordingly, the inflation rate for the year 2008 edges up to 15.14%. The largest proportion of inflation in 2008 (about 10 out of 14.88 points) was caused by the price increases that took place in January 2008.

19. Environment

162 I Statistical Yearbook 2009

Abu Dhabi is constantly seeking to raise the standard of environmental work and strike a balance between the Emirates aspired economic and social prosperity on the one hand and the challenge of preserving its cultural and social heritage and the environment on the other. This unique experience attests to the success of the sustainable development model. Abu Dhabi pays particular attention to waste management, with the total amount of waste reaching 4,892 ton, 70% of which is generated by construction and demolition works. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi generates more than 13000 tons of waste per day, which adds up to about five million tons annually. Some 96% of the Emirates waste is disposed of in designated landfills, while only 0.33% of total waste is recycled. The western region produces only 3.4% of treated wastewater, while Abu Dhabi accounts for the largest share (73%). Wastewater treatment has been increasing steadily since 2005 at 10 - 13% per annum. In 2008 there were 72,560 groundwater wells in use and 26,970 unused wells. About 454,896 million gallons of groundwater were pumped during the year under review. During 2008 there were 277 cases of food poisoning in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (i.e. 17.6 cases per 100,000 of the Emirates residents), resulting from ingestion of food and drinks contaminated with bacteria and viruses. The most common type of poisoning was that caused by typhoid bacteria, which was responsible for 117 cases or 42% the total cases of poisoning.
