DAY 1 OVERVIEW: The I LAUGH Model of Social Cognition This workshop is designed for parents and professionals to understand the inner mind of persons with special learning needs, specifically those high on the autism spectrum (Asperger Syndrome, PDD-NOS or high-functioning autism), with ADHD, with Nonverbal Learning Disabilities or who have no working diagnosis but they may fit the clinical picture! Participants will learn not only functional treatment strategies they can use both at school and at home, but they will also better understand why these students react and respond the way they do. On this day, we will introduce the I LAUGH model of Social Cognition which helps to demonstrate how social processing difficulties impact not only social skills but also the ability to work as part of a group and focus on specific academic tasks such as written expression, reading comprehension and organizational skills for many of our students. We will also address how best to approach writing IEP goals that impact real, albeit, slow change in how students understand the world around them. This workshop is noted for its depth in explaining WHY students with social skills difficulties have related academic challenges, which impact them across their school and home day. Participants will be able to explain how teaching "think with your eyes" is different from simply teaching good eye contact. explain why a person with social skill deficits may have reading comprehension problems in the classroom. distinguish and describe the difference between a useful IEP goal and one that is of little benefit towards developing their program. describe how the use of strategy cards can facilitate teaching of initiation of communication. explain how to teach students strategies to cope with boredom and manage blurting. explain how gestalt processing relates to written expression and organizational skills. DAY 2 OVERVIEW: Implementing Social Thinking Concepts and Vocabulary into the School and Home Day: A Day to Develop Team Creativity This is a favorite workshop day for parents and educators given the very practical nature of the information. Lessons are relevant for all school age students; and those working with preschoolers and young adults will also benefit from parts of this information. We will define many social thinking concepts and how to apply the Social Thinking vocabulary across the school and home day. Beginning with exploring how we work as part of a group, the three parts of play, exploring lessons on abstracting and inferencing information, sharing an imagination and how all this is combined to learn how to teach students the tools for participating in a conversation. As with all of our workshops, clinical examples will be used to highlight how to teach these abstract concepts to help make the information more concrete. Social Thinking Vocabulary (STV) has become the backbone of the Social Thinking teaching program. Research published in 2008 (Crooke, et al) in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders demonstrated how students benefited from learning these specific concepts in that they were able to generalize the information once taught how to think about it. Conference participants will also experience working as part of a group to expand upon this information by creating one or two of their own lesson plans. The focus of the day will be on making the teaching realizable across a variety of environments with the focus on helping students to carry the concepts from their classroom into their everyday lives.

Participants will be able to describe how teaching social thinking and related skills can be done in the classroom during academic and social tasks. define 5 different social thinking vocabulary concepts. describe how social thinking vocabulary concepts facilitate generalization across settings. create a lesson plan to teach students they are part of a group. create a lesson plan to teach students how to be more aware of non-verbal or verbal communicative information. explain the three parts of play. POPULATIONS TO BE DISCUSSED: School-age students and adults who have social and communication difficulties, including but not limited to those related to high-functioning autism, PDD-NOS, Asperger Syndrome, NLD, ADHD and undiagnosed challenges. Information presented concentrates on students with near normal to far above normal verbal intelligence (verbal IQs above 70). PRESENTER: Michelle Garcia Winner is a Speech and Language Pathologist who specializes in students with social cognitive deficits. She runs a clinic; has authored numerous books and speaks internationally. Michelles goal is to help educators and parents appreciate how social thinking and social skills is an integral part of students academic, vocational and community success. She was honored with a Congressional Special Recognition Award in 2008. She developed the Social Thinking program that for 15 years has assisted individuals with diagnosed and undiagnosed social- communicative difficulties. Students with high-functioning autism, Asperger syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), ADHD and nonverbal learning disorder (NLD) have benefited from this treatment approach, but Michelle's practical strategies are increasingly being taught to a broad range of students and adults, with or without diagnosis. Research published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders supported Michelles methodologies for higher- functioning autism and Aspergers. Social Thinking materials provide the basis for instructional programs developed in the U. S. and abroad for specific settings and student needs. Michelle directs a practice in San Jose, CA, where she works with clients and consults with families, schools and professionals. Michelle's goal is to help educators, therapists and parents appreciate how Social Thinking is a key foundation for a student's academic success and lifelong growth.
