Part II Do you really need S151?

We expect that many of the students commencing S151: Maths for science will be able to answer one or two of the following questions. However, if you can already correctly answer most or all of the questions, the course may be of limited benefit to you. You should attempt all questions apart from Questions 2, 3 and 6 without using a calculator. You are not expected to answer these questions in your head, but should write down your working clearly so that you can check with our answers at the end. Question 1 Without using a calculator, write each of the following in a simpler form: (a) 1012 10 3 Question 4

A number of the following expressions are equivalent. Which ones? (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) 2x 2y
x+2 y+2

(b) 10 2 10 4 (c) (10 )

4 1/ 2

(d) (125) 1 / 3

2x 2 2y2
x y
x y x2 y 2 x 2y 9 x 2 + 16 x 2 7y

Question 2

If L = 6.1 1030 W and F = 4.4 1010 W m2, find d in the equation

d= L 4F

(vii) 2 (viii)

You should give your answer in scientific notation, with the correct number of significant figures and the correct S.I. units. N.B. You do not need to understand the underlying science, or the units used in order to answer this question.
Question 3

Question 5

(a) Rearrange q = for r.

cb r2

to give an expression

Find the mean and standard deviation of the following twenty numbers: 8, 8, 4, 8, 8, 8, 7, 7, 7, 5, 9, 10, 6, 9, 7, 4, 8, 5, 11, 5.
You may answer this question using the appropriate statistical functions on your calculator or by another method if you would prefer.

b cb and F = r r2 to give an expression for F which does not include b.

(b) Combine the equations q =

Question 9

The period of oscillation T of a simple pendulum is related to its length L by the equation
T = 2 L g

Differentiate the following with respect to x: (a) y = 4 x 2 + x (b) y =

where g is the magnitude of the acceleration due to gravity. Which two of the following graphs would be a straight line? (i) T plotted against L

3 x2

Question 10

(ii) T plotted against L (iii) T 2 plotted against L (iv) T plotted against L L

Without using a calculator, write down the value of: (a) log10 1000 (b) log10 0.001 (c) log10 10

(v) T plotted against

Answers to Do you really need S151?

Question 1

Question 4

(a) 1012 10 3 = 1012+3 = 1015 (b) 10 2 10 4 = 10 2 4 = 10 2 =

1 10
2

(i), (iv), (vi), (vii) are equivalent; they can all x be simplified to . y x+2 cannot be further simplified. In (ii), y+2 can be written as 2 y 2y2 but it cannot be further simplified. In (iii),
y cannot be further simplified.

= 0.01 1 10 2 or

2x 2

x2

This answer could be given as 10 2 , 0.01. (c) (10 )

4 12

x or , y

In (v)

can be written as

x , but it y

= 10 = 10 = 100

This answer could be given as 10 2 or 100. (d) (125) 1 3 = 1

3

In (viii)

9 x 2 + 16 x 2 = 7y

25 x 2 5 x = 7y 7y

125

1 = 0.2 5
1 or 0.2. 5
Question 5

This answer could be given as

(a) Multiplying both sides of q =

Question 2

cb by r 2 2 r

gives
L 4F
qr 2 = cb Dividing both sides by q gives cb r2 = q Taking the square root of both sides gives r= cb q

d=

6.1 1030 W 4 4.4 10 10 W m 2

= 1.103 10 39 m 2 = 3.3 1019 m

Note that your answer to this question is not correct unless it is given to two significant figures and with correct units.
Question 3

You may have omitted the sign, but note that the answer could be either positive or negative.

Mean = 7.2 Standard deviation = 1.9 (Found using the sn or n button on a scientific calculator.)

q=

cb

r b F= r

(i) (ii)

Question 7

(ii) ( T 2 plotted against L) and (v) (T plotted against L ) will be straight line graphs.

Multiplying both sides of (i) by r2 gives qr 2 = cb Dividing both sides by c gives

qr 2 =b c

Question 8

The gradient of the graph is

( 6 2) 4 = =1 , ( 4 0) 4 and the intercept is 2, so the equation is y=x+2

Substituting for b in (ii) gives

F= = qr 2 r c
Question 9

qr 2 cr qr = c
Question 6

(a) y = 4 x 2 + x dy = 8x + 1 dx 3 (b) y = 2 x y = 3x 2 So 6 dy = 6 x 3 = 3 dx x

tan

3 .1 = 6 a

3.1 m tan( 6) 3.1 m = 0.5774 = 5.4 m to 2 significant figures. Note that the angle in Figure 1 is given in 6 radians. so a =

Question 10

(a) log10 1000 = log10 (103 ) = 3 (b) log10 0.001 = log10 (103 ) = 3 (c) log10 10 = log10 (101 2 ) = 1 2
