General Notes
Need to work 100,000 hours in your life to get something you like Difference between playing HS and college is strength and ability Lear 1 thing that you can use 3 Reasons to Dribble 1. Avoid a trap 2. Score 3. Improve passing angle When dribbling, be in a comfortable athletic stance, dont get to low Guard shooting - Left foot forward (right handed shooters) when receiving the pass, step into balance right foot Never miss a shot the same way twice Need to talk on the floor Make drills a competition If you get fouled in practice, shoot the FT Have to teach the kids to want to pass
1 Ball Dribbling - High dribble - Low dribble - Pound dribble (high / low) - Crossover - Behind back - Between legs

2 Ball Dribbling (A) - Knee high - Alternate / together - Shoulder height - Crossover - Push pull on the sides

2 Ball Dribbling (B) - 2 dribbles forward and then come to a controlled jump stop Note: be in balance when you come to a jump stop

JS JS 2 dribbles

JS JS 2 dribbles

2 Ball Dribbling (D) - Defense * keep ball handlers outside shoulder in the middle of your chest * Throw leg out * Work on your defensive stance (low / wide) - Offense * Cannot turn your back to the defense, you will get trapped) * Need to stay in bounds - 1st defender drops once offense gets to half court - Once at half court, offense drops 1 ball and goes live 1 on 1 with 2nd defender Note: Offense cannot turn back during 1 on 1 game

Handling Traps - Have your 4 man flash to the high post - Look to skip opposite - Use pull back dribble to avoid the trap - Attack the slower defender of the trap or attack to your strong hand

O2

O1

Spot Shooting - Start inside the 3 point line - Then move outside the 3 point line - Keep alternating - Take a total of 6 shots from each spot - Move to different spot (baseline, wing, top of key, wing, baseline)

O2 Shot

O1

Forehead Fake - Jab at the defender - Rip the ball through to the direction you are driving - Push the ball out in front - Use the glass if you can - Alternate directions Note: Post to guard pass is a great time to shoot the ball

Series 5 Shooting - Jab step curl cut and shoot - Jab step to wing and shoot - Jab step to wing to 3 and shoot - Jab step to wing to flare cut and shoot - Jab step to wing to flare cut to ball fake and shoot

O2

Series 5 Shooting Jab Step Curl Cut - Jab in and make a curl cut - Have hands ready and show target

O2

Series 5 Shooting Jab Step to Wing - Jab in and cut out to the wing

O2

Series 5 Shooting Jab Step to Wing to 3 - Jab in and cut out to the 3 point line

O2

Series 5 Shooting Jab Step to 3 and Flare Cut - Jab in and cut to the 3 point line - Flare out to the corner

O2

Series 5 Shooting - Jab step to wing to flare cut to ball fake and shoot - On the catch, shot fake, rip and drive for the pull up. Use the glass when you can

Note: add bad passes for the drill, not every pass in a game is going to be a good pass

O O O O

4 Game Shooting - Set a cross screen let them clear and then pop out - Plant inside foot - Add a ball fake, rip and drive

Footwork Shooting - Throw inside leg to set the pivot foot - Stay in balance
O OO C

O3 O1 O2

2 Ball Shooting - 3 players, 2 balls - Follow your shot and pass the ball back out to the open player - After you pass out to an open person, relocate and be ready to receive a pass - Relocate to various spots - Constant communication is needed (players names, ball)

O3 O1 O2

O4

2 Ball Shooting 4 Players - 4 players 2 balls - Shoot, follow your shot, pass to open man - Need constant communication - Relocate to different spots

O3

Purdue Drill (A) - Make 4 3s in a minute - Need to have a rebounder and a passer - To start, O2 must sprint to the baseline where and back up to the wing where he will then receive a pass for a 3.

O1

O2

O3

Purdue Drill (B) - After the first shot, O2 has to sprint to half court, then to the baseline and back up to the wing to get the next shot - Continue until the time has elapsed or he makes 4 3 pointers
O2

O1

- Rotate shooter to rebounder, rebounder to passer, passer to shooter - Shooter runs for each point below the 4 goal

O2

Defensive Closeouts Influence Baseline - Close short if not a good shooter - Bow them out to the corner on the drive - Dont let them get deep on the baseline
O1

O2

Defensive Closeouts Influence Middle - Bow out away from paint

O1

Defensive Closeouts Closeout on Shooter -Closeout tight on defender initially to take away shot and then give them some distance (arms length)

Post Feeds - Guards use dribble to improve pass angle

X5 O5 X1 O1

Options - Post pass back and repost * Bury the post defender on the repost Option - Add perimeter defender - Perimeter defender should dig in the post when the ball is entered to the post

Ball Handling 2 Ball Stationary Together at knees/below knees/shoulders Alternating at knees/below knees/shoulders Left HIGH right LOW Left LOW right HIGH Together with a crossover on whistle 2 Ball Non Stationary Go out to half court performing all 4 moves (together, alternating, L-High R-LOW, L-LOW H-HIGH). Change all of the moves with a jumps stop but do not stop your dribble. 2 Ball vs. Defense Defender plays solid defense, however; not necessarily trying to steal the ball, just wants to work the offensive player side to side. Offensive player works back and forth only using pull back dribble. 1 on 3 Full Court Ball Handling Offensive player is simply trying to get by all 3 defender in succession. First defender covers baseline to top of the 3 point line. Second defender covers 3 point line to half court. Third defender covers half court to end line Shooting Stationary Shooting Player shoots 5 shots alternating between 2 and 3 point line while a coach rebounds. The spots are: Baseline, wing, top of key, wing baseline. Player goes around and back shooting a total of 50 shots. Player shoots 5 free throws. Repeat the drill expect this time they add a shot fake 1 dribble (alternate left hand dribble and right hand dribble). Series 7 Shooting Player starts under the basket with a coach at the top of the key to pass. Here are the 7 cuts 1. Curl 2. Wing 3. Wing shot fake 1 dribble 4. Wing 3 5. Wing 3 shot fake 1 dribble pull up 6. Flare 7. Flare shot fake Early Offense Players start on each wing, swing through (slapping hands together) for a shot on the other wing. Coaches are on the lane lines passing. 4 Game Shooting 2 Players start on each block with the ball. 2 coaches on each wing. Player passes ball to coach then sets a cross screen on the other block, then comes off a down screen for a shot. Alternate shooters, and have the shooters alternate lines.

Defense Straight Closeout 2 players start with ball on each block with a coach on each wing. Player passes ball to the coach then closes out on the coach forcing either baseline or middle. Position Closeouts Coach starts with a ball on the wing with another coach on the top of the key. Player is in weak side position (2 feet in the paint). Ball gets rotated to the top; player is now closes out to gap position (Not on his man). Ball goes to the wing and the player closes out to the ball 1-on-1 live. Closeout Jump to the Ball Coach has the ball on the wing with an offensive player on the lane line. Defensive player starts on the block. Coach passes the ball to the offensive player. Defensive player closes out. Offensive player passes back to the coach. Defensive player jumps to the ball. Offensive player then basket cuts trying to go over the top. Drill is done when defender is fronting the offensive player in the post. 2 on 2 Shell Offensive player on the top of the key and the wing with defense guarding them. Coach on the wing. Rules: Make it take up to 5. Have to be on the coachs side of the floor with the ball to pass to coach. 2 dribble max. 4 on 4 Shell 4 coaches on the 2 lane lines and the wings 4 players guarding them Start with coaches being station. Add baseline penetration. Add weak side interchanges (down screen, flare screen) Final Drill Players start at center court with each player having a ball. Have coaches on the wing. Player passes to the coach and receives a pass back for a 3. Got to make X amount in a row in 3 minutes or else they run.

Scott Nagy
SDSU Mens Basketball Defensive Principles / Rebounding Techniques

General Notes
-Look at off/def ratios effects ----- it is all about the numbers - Rebounding effects possessions (need to have heart, not size) - Toughness as coaches and parents, we are not hard enough on our kids. We need to prepare them to deal with tough times in life. - Number of FTA/FTM in a game * Fouls happen in the paint (drives, post entry) * This effects your defense, keep it out of the paint * Dont foul them when the ball is on the floor - We need to be physical bullies on the floor --- out tough them In order play hard in a game, you need to practice hard To be a good defensive team 1. Take care of the ball on offense 2. Force low shooting percentage (pack defense or pressure denial). You need to select a style that will force the lowest points per possession of the other team. Need to become comfortable with being uncomfortable Will you sacrifice yourself for your teammates? Jump to the ball or back screens will kill you Shots from the wing, baseline usually will go long on the back end Must read: Jay Bilas Mental Toughness Need to know what your philosophy is ---- Winning vs. Teaching Cant feel sorry for yourself
X1 O1 X1

O1

Defensive Closeouts - Defense rolls the ball out to the offense located at the wing - Defense closes out on the offense - Live 1 on 1 - Keep score (example, foul = +2) - Alternate sides - Winners dont have to run

Shell Drill (1) Jumping the ball - Emphasize jumping to the ball - 3 teams of 4 - All players need to jump to the ball when it is being passed - Designate a shooter as the ball is passed around the perimeter * Once the shot goes up, you play live 4 on 4 * Defense has to get the ball to get out * If offense gets the ball, continue to play live - Keep rotating in and out w/ teams Note: players need to turn their hips and sprint to help position Shell Drill (2) Give and go cuts - Offensive players should try and score on a give and go when they pass * If you dont get the ball on the give and go cut, pop back out * Defense needs to jump the ball in order not to get a face cut

O3

X3 X4 O2 X2 X1 O1

O4

Shell Drill (3) Flash - Person 1 pass away always flashes in and then flashes out - Defense needs to stay in HELP when the offense flashes out
O3 X3 X4 O2 X2 X1 O1 O4

Shell Drill (4) Live - Offense needs to try to get into the paint - Defense can NOT allow the offense to get into the paint Note: When players start moving, it is harder to be in correct help position. You could be denying 1 second and then another second you need to be in help position under the hoop. - Hard to know who is going to help Key: Need to know where the ball is

X4 O4 X2 O2 X1 O1

Power Ball - Go by points scored - Charges = +5 - Everyone becomes an offensive player on the miss (if the defense gets a rebound, they go right back up to get a put back) - The team that scores can keep scoring until the other team gets the ball

Bo Ryan
Wisconsin Mens Basketball Swing Offense / Transition Defense

General Notes
The first thing we talk about is transition defense Why? 1. Best defense is 5 vs. 5, transition defense helps you meet that Our opponents hold the ball longer on offense than we do After a poor shot, usually a foul will take place in transition defense Good shot selection helps transition defense Transition defense is a mindset Our goal is to be last in shot blocks If you are jumping to block shoots, you increase your chances of 1. Fouling 2. Being out of position for the dump pass in transition 3. Being out of position for rebounding Cant get back seconds lost in transition defense ---- need to sprint Have to be willing to take a charge Assistant coaches you are always 2 technicals away from being the head coach
First Guy Back - Do not stand under the hoop * Cant pick up the charge ---- step in front of the hoop - Shade toward the ball - Do not give up the lay-up Second Guy Back - Engage the ball - Make him give the ball up

X1

X2

X1

1st and 2nd Guy Rotations (1) ----- Engaging the ball - Top defender needs to drop when ball is in the air - Bottom defender takes 1st pass when 1st player is being engaged by the top defender
O3
Engage

O1

X2

O2

X1

1st and 2nd Guy Rotations (2) ---- Not engaging the ball - If the top defender does not engage the ball, top defender takes first pass
O3

O1

X2

O2

X2 O2 O3 X1 O1

Defending the Lob in Transition -Key: dropping defender needs to Engage the person receiving the lob before he gets he pass * If you engage once he leaves the floor, it will be a foul * Stay on the floor and get tall (arms up straight) --- dont NOT leave the floor

X1 O3 O2 X2
Intercept

O1

3rd Man Down In Transition / 4th and 5th Man Down - Needs to come to ball side guard * Why? To many times in transition offense, the ball gets kicked to the wing and then gets reversed back to the point. A lot of the time, the reversal pass is so robotic, the wing passer does not even look to see if anyone is coming in defensive transition and you can intercept that pass. - 4th and 5th man down locate shooters -Keys: 1. Get wings covered on the 1st pass 2. 3rd guy down covers ball reversal 3. 4th and 5th guys down locate shooters

X3

Transition Defense Drills: 3-0 Weave into 2-on-1 Break - 3 lines on the baseline, ball starting in the middle - 3 players do a 3 man weave down the length of the court - The person who makes the assist becomes the defender in transition defense - The other 2 are offense in transition back the other way Offensive Key: 1. Do not settle for jumpers 2. Do not pass the ball East and West, the defense does not have to move with East and West passes Defensive Key: 1. Do not give up lay-ups, force a jumper 2. Do not stand under to hoop (cant take a charge)

Transition Defense Drills: 5-0 Weave into 3-on-2 Break - 5 players do a 5 on 0 weave down the length of the court for a lay-up - The person who made the assist is the first defender back - The person who makes the lay-up is the 2nd defender back - 1st man needs to engage the ball

O2

O1

O3 C

X2

X1

X3

Transition Defense Drills: 6 Man Drill - Coach numbers the players - Coach calls out a number of 1 of the defensive players - The players number called out needs to sprint to the baseline and then sprint back into defensive transition Example: 1. Coach calls out 2 which = X2 2. Coach throws out the ball for the offense to get and go into offensive transition 3. The persons number who was 4. 3rd guy down needs to come to the ball side guard

X2 O2 X1 O1

O3 X3 C

Search and Destroy - Coach calls out a defensive number (X2) - Player needs to freeze until the ball gets across half court - Coach throws the ball out, and the offense goes in transition - The 2 defenders who are not Froze sprint back in transition defense first person back gets to the rim, second player back engages the ball - 3rd person back comes ball side guard - Play 3 on 3 live if no transition basket is scored

O5

Swing Offense Up Series - Big flashes to high post for a pressure release

O1

O5 O2 O3

Up Series - 1 hits the high post flash - 4 man cuts to ball side block for a post up - 1 and 3 set a double staggered screen for 2

O4 O1

O1

O4

O3 O2

Up Series (2) - If there is no shot off the double staggered screen, 5 should look to 3 - 5 then sets a fade screen for 2 where 3 should look to skip the ball.

O5

O4

Up Series (2) Ball Screen Option - If 5 passes the ball out to the 2 man, he can then set a ball screen and then roll to the basket

O5 O3 O2

O5 O2 O3 O4

Up 1 - 5 flashes high for release - 4 cuts to ball side block and posts up - 2 man clears through to right side corner - 1 man cuts hard to the elbow and then flares out - 5 man kicks out for a 3 point shot Post kick outs for a 3 is the highest percentage 3 point shot

O1

O2

O5 O3 O4 O1

Up 2 - 5 flashes for pressure release - 4 dives to post up

O2

O4 O3 O5 O1

Up 2 (2) - 1 clears out for floor balance - 5 passes out to the 3 man - 4 man sets a flex screen for the 2 man

O2

O4 O3 O5

Up 2 (3) Option - Rather than the 4 posting at the block, he cuts through to the right side wing - 5 kicks the ball out to the 4 at the wing - 3 cuts through and sets the cross screen for 2 who looks to get a pass from 4

O1

O2 O3 O5 O4 O1

Up 3 - After a while seal the post with the 3

O2 O3 O5 O4 O1

Up 4 - 5 man skips to 1 - 2 sets a cross screen for the 4 man - 3 V cuts

O2 O3 O5 O4 O1

Up 5 - 5 catches and uses a reverse pivot to seal the defense - 3 man clears out which gives 5 a good driving lane to the basket Option: Lob over the top if they deny the UP cut on the 5

General Notes Take bits and pieces from clinics add them to your own program Why Run High Low 1. Control tempo and ball ---- play off of the pass 2. Dont have to worry about where the ball is entered 3. Spacing ---- post isolations 4. Take what the defense gives you 5. Run it as your break offense 6. Great pressure release Motion Absolutes 1. Push the defender up the lane if fronted 2. Bury defense if played behind 3. Leg whip to seal for dump pass Punch Pass = Fake pass and go opposite of fake with a pass --- gets help defense to bit Cant always coach the same way Have to adapt to your players, yet stay within your philosophy Areas of the floor - 2 side: has 2 guards on that side of the floor - 1 Single side: has 1 guard on that side of the floor - Sweet spot = high post flash area - Cheat step (post flash) * Step across the defense * Throw ball to outside hand

General Notes Must Read Book: Soar With Your Strengths A great falsity in cohesiveness Why? 1. Must have high achievers 2. Hard to make low achievers want to work They are used to being allowed to underachieve used to having low expectations / goals If you want results, you need accountability Establish Your Philosophy - What do you stand for? - What you teach will leave a legacy - Need to build intrinsic motivation - You need to be humble to be great - If you want to lead, you need to be a servant (Servant Leadership) Create a Mission Statement - How are you going to reach your goals? - Win with integrity Establish Your Style of Play - Want guys with vision (Court vision, off the court vision) - What am I comfortable with? - What is my personality Give player the paint to paint their own picture within your environment How You Prepare Your Teams - Have to have deliberate practices --- need a purpose or focus - It is not just about working hard -Show the players how you are going to prepare * Putting together a jigsaw puzzle --- dont take apart the puzzle after it is put together * Example: Drills isolate a specific performance 5 Things to Teaching 1.
