Each year, groups of students
embark on trips to selected coun-
tries around the world through
the People to People Student Am-
bassador program. This year, stu-
dents from Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, New York and Massachu-
setts were in a group that went to
Australia from July 8 through 27.
Jaden Tyrrell, 15, of Shamong,
was one of the students to attend
the trip.
The People to People Student
Ambassador Program operates
under People to People Interna-
tional, a non-political, private-sec-
tor organization founded by
Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 to
further international goodwill
and understanding.
It provides educational good-
will travel programs for three
groups fifth and sixth grades,
seventh and eighth grades and
ninth through twelfth grades.
Each group can have 40 students
with four leaders. The leaders can
be teachers, retired teachers, or
school administrators. Programs
are offered all over the country
and thousands of students travel
each year.
Tyrrell was first approached to
go to Germany with the program
for tennis.
I looked online and saw what
the itinerary was, but I didnt
want to do the Germany trip,
Tyrrell said. But I was recom-
mended for the Australia trip and
I looked at the itinerary for that
and wanted to go.
After being recommended,
Tyrrell had to complete the appli-
cation process. She had to move
through the process quickly be-
cause she was applying in April.
You have to do the application
and an interview, Tyrrell said.
The selection process looks at
your GPA, there has to be three
teacher recommendations, you
have to be well-rounded and a
good student. I also had a month
to do quizzes, but they were easy.
Tyrell was picked in May and
was very excited about the trip
and all the new experiences she
would have and learn from.
The programs give students
an opportunity to be great ambas-
sadors for themselves, their fami-

About 20 years ago this article
never would have existed, but
today its a necessity. School is
just around the corner, and stu-
dents and parents alike will be
flocking to different school dis-
trict website to see their class
lists, download permission forms,
physical forms, and even track
their grades.
Parents and students of the
Shamong Township Schools can
get up-to-date information, break-
ing news, curriculum changes,
and contact information for both
Indian Mills Elementary and In-
dian Mills Middle School by visit-
ing the districts website at
www.ims.k12.nj.us. Parents of stu-
dents who are at the high school
level can get much of the same by
visiting Seneca High Schools
unique site at the Lenape Region-
al High School Districts website
at www.lrhsd.org.
The K-8 districts welcome page
allows visitors to visit the indi-
vidual schools pages, administra-
tion pages, the board of educa-
tion, and receive faculty informa-
tion. A news feed called The Dis-
trict Spotlight can be found on
the bottom left side of the page
and is updated regularly with dis-
trict breaking news and curricu-
lum changes.
Visitors can also take advan-
tage of an interesting program
called Moodle on the website,
which puts students and parents
in touch with teachers at each
grade level. Teachers can post as-
signments for students to com-
plete and parents can track what
their children are completing at

The 9-and-under Seneca War
Eagles baseball team finished off
its season with a victory, beating
10 other teams for the champi-
onship. The team competed in the
2011 Southern Grand Slam Tour-
nament held in Manahawkin,
clinching its championship with
a win against the North Howell
Bombers.
A lot of the teams were asking
where we were from in the begin-
ning of the tournament, Mark
Jasinski, head coach, said. By
the end of the tournament, they
knew where we were from.
This is the first year that the
War Eagles had a 9-year-old team.
The team started doing its indoor
workouts in February at the
Pinelands Center, building skills
on batting, hitting, fielding and
other essentials. In March, they
held tryouts.
We played in about 21 games
and a couple tournaments, and
then the boys went their separate
ways to play in the local leagues,
Jasinski said. We won 11 games
and lost 10.
Around the Fourth of July, the
boys called the coach asking to
get the team together again and to
play in a tournament. Jasinski
found the 2011 Southern Grand
Slam Tournament and entered it.
There were 10 teams in the
tournament, Jasinski said.
Seven were from New Jersey,
and three were from, the New
York, Long Island area.
The teams had to play in six
games in the tournament. The
Seneca War Eagles played in one
game on Friday, July 29 which
they won. On Saturday, they
played two games against the
North Howell Bombers, both of
which they lost. On Sunday, they
played three games, one of which
was the championship game
against the North Howell
Bombers.
It was the last out, runners on
second and third, Jasinski said.
We pitched and struck out their
No. 3 hitter to win the game. It
was pretty exciting. We were play-
ing against some kids that were
six inches taller, 20 pounds heav-
ier than us. We have no big
bombers on our team. We just
continued to hit the ball and
pitched strong.

lies, their schools, their churches,
and the United States, Jeanne
Hayes, People to People delega-
tion leader, said. The students
also see and do many activities
that will help them decide what
they would like to become. They
also show goodwill to the people
they meet and when they are
completing a service project.
While in Australia, Tyrrell and
her group got to see the many at-
tractions in Australia and partici-
pate in some amazing excursions.
They traveled the coast of Cairns
and went scuba diving in the
Great Barrier Reef, among many
other activities.
We went sand bogging in the
sand dunes, which was amazing,
Tyrrell said. We went to Tanga-
looma, which is a dolphin re-
search center, that was a lot of
fun. We got to propel down a 200-
foot cliff; that was probably my fa-
vorite thing we did.
During the trip, all hotel ac-
commodations and meals were
paid for, but the groups did get to
stay with host families for a few
days out of the trip.
I got to stay with a family of
four on a farm in the Outback,
Tyrrell said. They had two kids,
so that was cool and they were re-
ally nice.
Tyrrell isnt sure if shell go on
another trip next year, but she
loved the experience of Australia.
She also tries to stay in touch
with her delegation.
I do talk to people from my
group, Tyrrell said. Im not
sure if Ill go on another trip next
year because of the cost, but Aus-
tralia was a lot of fun.

According to the Burlington
County newsletter you can help
celebrate the bicentennial of the
Historic Burlington County
Prison Museum by taking a self-
guided tour of the national land-
mark.
Located in downtown Mount
Holly, the prison was designed by
renowned architect Robert Mills

vaulted ceilings of poured con-
crete and brick and stone con-
struction, it was the oldest contin-
ually used prison in the United
States at the time of its closing in
1965.
Today, the prison is considered
a fine example of innovative plan-
ning and the growing notion of
social responsibility to rehabili-
tate criminals. Visitors to the mu-
seum will see numerous artifacts
and exhibits on display.
The prison museum is open for
self-guided tours Thursdays

Wednesdays and Saturdays
through August and September
from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Although these classes are
open to all drivers, this is an im-

it on Saturdays, we are hoping
that parents will elect to take the
class with their child before send-
ing them back to school. This
might be the most important
seven hours you spend with your

Motor vehicle crashes are the
leading cause of death among
teens in the United States, with
an average of 6,000 teens killed
each year and another 300,000 in-
jured.
In New Jersey during 2009,
there were 47,960 crashes involv-
ing teen drivers. Out of that num-
ber, 34 teen drivers and eight teen
passengers lost their lives. Preva-
lent factors in those fatal crashes
included speed, distractions, in-
experience and the lack of seat
belt use. All of these issues and
more are addressed in the course
curriculum.
Persons completing the course
may receive up to a 5 percent dis-
count from their insurance com-
pany and/or have two motor vehi-
cle points removed from their
record.
Although the course is free,
there is a $10 fee, which is man-
dated by the New Jersey State
Safety Council and the State of
New Jersey, which must be paid
in order to be awarded the neces-
sary certificate to receive the dis-
count or point-reduction. Seating
is limited. To register for a class,
call the Sheriff s Department
Community Services Unit at 265-

like it is, which is way, way more than
what we are getting from any other
politician.
A week or so ago, Nutter threw po-
litical correctness out the window. Ac-
cording to recent reports, he spoke
with passion, honesty and sincerity.
And that's more than we get from most
politicians, who are worried only
about securing votes and pandering to
their political bases.
Nutter channeled Bill Cosby when
he talked about personal responsibili-
ty and addressing some of todays is-
sues. It wasn't the usual political fluff
we hear from officeholders. He didn't
blame society or unknown, unseen,
unavoidable forces of nature.
No, he said that parents need to be
responsible for raising their kids.
Now, it's sad that saying something
so obvious, so simple, so logical gar-
ners this much attention. It's sad be-
cause we've come to expect so little out
of our elected leaders. We've come to
expect excuses, lies and cowardice.
We're so conditioned to watching sup-
posed "leaders" dodge and duck basic
questions that, when someone just
says what's on his mind and steps up
to seriously address an issue, we're
blown away.
So, Mr. Mayor, how about it? Toss
your hat into the ring. If you get Cos to
run as your VP, you're in.
Finally, a politician with sense
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter should run for the nations top job
And your pick?
Do any of the presidential hopefuls
get you excited to run to the polls
next November?

Congratulations, Kevin Comer: Hes a Jay
Seneca High School grad
chooses Blue Jays over Vandy
Kevin Comer is going straight from high
school to professional baseball, without
stopping for college along the way.
But he might go back later.
After verbally committing to attend Van-
derbilt University on a baseball scholar-
ship, the powerhouse pitcher from Seneca
High School in Tabernacle chose instead to
accept the offer from the Toronto Blue
Jays.
The Jays had chosen him all the way
back on June 6 the 57th overall pick in the
draft and Comer apparently has been
weighing his options from that day until
late Monday night...
...Yeah, a college education is important.
But they offered him $1.65 million. What
would you have done when you were 18?

Police uncover alleged burglar
by hearing him snore
Police in South Brunswick say they
caught a burglar napping loudly.
Officers who had arrested two suspects
at a commercial break-in were searching
the site afterward when they heard snor-
ing from over a large refrigeration unit in
the basement.
Police say they pulled out Israel Cortes,
35, of Ewing, whose brother Christian
Cortes of Pemberton had already been ar-
rested in the same burglary, according to
MSNBC.com.
A couple of hours earlier, an officer had
noticed cars parked behind the former Big
Eds restaurant on Route 130. After police
entered the basement, three suspects fled.
Christian Cortes was arrested right out-
side the building. Another suspect,
Richard Wilson, 39, of Ewing, was arrested
near the Travelers Inn Motel about an
hour later.

South Jersey natives producing
horror flick Deer Crossing
Swerving to avoid a deer can lead to un-
foreseen consequences.
Thats the jumping-off point for local in-
dependent film-in-the-making Deer Cross-
ing, which horror movie fans are already
buzzing about.
It starts with Maggy Chancelor (played
by Laura Lynn Cottrel) who has a 6-year-
old son. They are on their way to visit fami-
ly in the Poconos, get detoured, swerve to
avoid a deer and crash. They are abducted
and held hostage for eight years. The son
escapes and tells a detective of the horrors
he and his mother suffered during that
time.
Cameraman Amel Figueroa has lived in
South Jersey most of his life. He and his
business partner, Brandon Brooks, have a
small production company called SaintSin-
ner Entertainment based in Salem.
Id like to think of myself more than
just a cameraman, Figueroa said. I
mean, I believe (Im) an artist who can easi-
ly work with other artists to create some-
thing magnificent.
