The Quarter Horse Wire

June 2011

President’s Message

With the passage of our Gambling Bill, Senate File 526, the future of Quarter Horse Racing and Breeding has never looked brighter. I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make this finally happen, including the IQHRA, HBPA, ITBOA, the IaHHA, Prairie Meadows, and the IRGC. I look forward to our continued partnership as we work together to strengthen horse racing in the State of Iowa.

We are rapidly approaching our second stand-alone Quarter Horse Meet at Prairie Meadows and things are coming together well. Response from trainers around the country has been outstanding and we are expecting another large field of horses. Entries for Championship Weekend continue to rise with late payments and entry numbers up greatly from 2010. A reminder that the nomination deadline for the Challenge Races at Prairie Meadow is July 1 st .

This year’s meet will be full of excitement. Just a few of the dates to mark on your calendar include opening night, August 9 th , when Coach Tom Brands and the Iowa Wrestling Staff will be on hand. On Friday the 26 th of August, Coach Fran McCaffrey and his Iowa Basketball staff will be on the apron to meet and greet everyone. The next night Ben Hudson, owner and editor of Track Magazine will be with us. Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night is scheduled for Saturday, August 20 th . Morning at the Meadows is scheduled for Saturday, August 27 th , Youth days the 9 th and 10 of September, Fiesta on the Prairie will be Friday, Sept. 16 th , Bass Pro Shop Night September 24 th , and more to be announced soon.

Finally, don’t miss the consignment deadline of July 15th for the Annual IQHRA Fall Sale. The entry form is enclosed in this month’s newsletter. This year’s sale is Sunday, September 11 th , at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. A special thanks to the Sale Committee Chairman Terry Thorson and his committee for all of their hard work on this event. Also, don’t forget that this year’s IQHRA Awards Banquet is scheduled for Sunday, August 28 th at the Ramada Tropics-Resort and Conference Center. Make plans now to attend!
