Inspired by the Tenth Doctor... He's like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun. He's ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and he can see the universe. And... he's wonderful. ~ Tim Latimer in The Family of Blood

Dye your own yarn! I quickly became addicted to dyeing my own sock yarns using Kool-Aid some time ago. It is so much fun & you can really come up with some fun colorways! While experimenting with dyeing my own yarn, I realized that I could dye my own yarns to make the perfect Tenth Doctor socks. Start with: Blue: 6 packets of Berry Blue Brown: 6 packets of Orange + 6 packets of Grape I strongly recommend that you purchase twice what you think you might need to reach the right saturation of color. You may need to go up to 8 or even 10 packets each of orange & grape to get the right shade of brown! Here is a terrific tutorial on how to dye yarn with Kool-Aid on knitty.com. These socks are worked cuff down with a heel flap. They are knit using stranded knitting and should be knit loosely in order for the socks to fit over the foot.

Cast on 72 stitches, dividing onto 4 DPNs by placing 18 stitches per needle with blue. Needles 1 & 2 will be the front/instep of the sock while needles 3 & 4 will be the back/bottom of the sock. Cuff: K2, P2 3 rounds in blue. Join brown and K2, P2 7-10 rounds. Leg: Join blue. K1 in blue, K5 in brown while holding the blue loosely at the back. There will be a total of 12 brown stripes & 12 blue stripes. Repeat until the desired length has been reached before beginning the heel. Heel : For the heel, continue with the color striping pattern as closely as possible. On needles 3 & 4, work the heel back & forth as follows: Row 1: (RS) *S1, K1* across the row you will need to anchor the blue float when knitting one of the brown stiches, as the blue stripe will be a slip. Row 2: (WS) S1, Purl the row, continuing with the brown/blue striping pattern. Continue for 36 rows. Heel Turn: Row 1: S1, K20, SSK, K1, turn Row 2: S1, P7, P2tog, P1, turn Row 3: S1, K to 1 stitch before the gap at the previous turn, SSK, K1, turn Row 4: S1, P to 1 stitch before the gap at the previous turn, P2tog, P1, turn Continue until all stitches have been worked. Try to keep the color striping as close as possible while doing so. 22 stitches will remain. Knit one row, adding 1 stitch, then purl another row while adding 1 stitch so that there are 24 stitches total. Gussets: S1, K23. Alternating brown & blue yarns, pickup & knit each sl stitch along edge of heel flap, plus 1 between the flap & the top of the sock. Knit across the top of the sock, following the brown/blue striping. Once again alternating brown & blue yarns, pickup & knit each sl stitch along the other side edge of the heel flap. Row 1: K to last 2 of the gusset, K2tog, work the top of the sock, SSK and K to the end. Row 2: Knit round, following color pattern.

Continue until 72 stitches remain. Rework the color sequencing as needed so that the striping is once again back to 5 stitches brown to 1 stitch blue on the bottom of the foot as you work the gusset you will need to M1 on the bottom to do so. Be sure to wait until the gusset is half done before doing so in order to keep the sock from becoming too loose. Foot: Continue brown/blue striping pattern until the foot of the sock is 2 less than the length of the foot. Toes: Each row: Knit each stitch, but on 2 of the brown stripes each side, K2tog in the middle. At the start of the toes, you will have 6 brown stripes each side each brown stripe having 5 stitches. When the first round is complete, you will have 6 brown stripes each side, but 2 will have 4 stitches and 6 will have 5 stitches. With the next round, select 2 other brown stripes to decrease. Each round will reduce 2 brown stripes another stitch until eventually there will be single blue/single brown stitches left. At this point, 24 total stitches remain (12 on each side of the sock). Bind Off: Use the kitchener stitch to bind off & finish the toes. You can find instructions on this method in several places here is the one at Knitty.com. Enjoy!
