Is Baker Woods State Na-
ture Preserve Mercer Coun-
tys best kept secret? Coldwa-
ter resident Ron Westgerdes
thinks so. He serves as Baker
Woods volunteer employee
for the state and says, Baker
Woods is the best woods trail
foot path within a fty mile
radius. He would like to
see more visitors on the trail
enjoying the beauty and plea-
sure of the forested area. The
path is not overly maintained
and yet easily and safely
walked single le for a 1.25-
mile hike.
Walking sticks are avail-
able at the entrance of the
woods to assist in walking
the paths. Mr. Westgerdes
fashioned these sticks from
harvested saplings cut during
clearing for the trail.
There are three paths from
which to choose. The main
eastern edge path from north
to south, the Lela Mae Loop,
or the Pawpaw Loop. Both
loops take off from the main
path and are easy to navigate.
The Pawpaw Loop is a col-
lection of Pawpaw trees that
are especially plentiful this
year. Mr. Westgerdes has
placed wooden benches in
the area of each loop path for
the pleasure of hikers.
He has also added a Log
Book in a standing mail-
box for visitors to sign. His
original entry states, He has
been serving as volunteer
trail keeper for the woods
since February of 2009 and
has enjoyed every minute of
it.
Fall is probably the best
time to walk the paths to en-
joy the beautiful foliage but
winter would also be inter-
esting as deer tracks may be
found. Westgerdes spends
time walking the paths with
snowshoes to keep the paths
open and user friendly.
Spring will nd the grounds
carpeted with wildowers
while summer brings out the
mosquitoes that breed in the
swampy wet areas.
Baker Woods State Nature
Preserve is located north of
Coldwater at 4316 St. An-
thony Road. Parking is con-
veniently located near the
entrance. Hiking requires a
sturdy hiking shoe or sneak-
er. Long sleeves help to pro-
tect arms, a touch of insect
repellent and a hat to cover
the head. Good etiquette re-
quires leaving everything as
you nd it. Pack out what
you pack in. Pets are not per-
mitted.
Thank you Ms. Baker for
your vision and donation of
the woods. Thanks also to
Mr. Westgerdes for his con-
tinued dedication to the Bak-
er Woods Nature Preserve.

The Midwest America
Healing Field oat along
with this group of volun-
teers and committee mem-
bers have currently trav-
eled over 500 miles this
summer covering eastern
Indiana and Western Ohio.
From the rst week of June
and almost every weekend
thereafter these youngsters
have persevered through
the scorching temperatures
this summer and some of the
faster paced parades and fes-
tivals without a complaint.
Well maybe there was a
small sigh or two on those
exceptionally hot days but
they were soothed with a
chilled bottle of water or
gatorade.
But the summer isnt over
yet and there are still more
parades to go. Having both
family and friends that are
currently serving our coun-
try and our community they
hope to encourage everyone
to take part in thanking their
own heroes at this special
event.
The oat and the volun-
teers have been out promot-
ing the 10 day event taking
place this September 2nd
thru 11th in Jay County
Indiana, on the grounds of
Bearcreek Farms Resort.
The event is being held
to show Honor, Love, Re-
spect and Remembrance to
all those who serve or have
served our country and our
communities by their ser-
vice in the military, or as a
reghter, in law enforce-
ment or in the Emergency
Medical Service. Letting
them know they are not for-
gotten as well as providing
educational speakers and
demonstrations to help in-
form the public to the vari-
ous services they provide.

your hero, volunteer or just

about the special 10 day
schedule, please contact the

How They Spent Their Summer Vacation
BBBS Rafe
Rake and Corn Picker reunite at farm market
Two individuals that en-
joyed a reunion last Saturday
at the Coldwater Farm Market
were Mr. Hay Rake and Mr.
Corn Picker. Both were made
at the Sycamore street facil-
ity of New Idea. Mr. Rakes
birthday dates back to 1951
and did not cause a big cel-
ebration at the time. He had
quite a few siblings making
their way into the farms and
ranches around the country
and each was a blessing by
making hay making a little
easier for the farmers. Mr.
Picker, on the other hand, ar-
rived later in that century and
along with his siblings caused
quite a stir by putting a lot of
people out of work. Prior to
Mr. Pickers arrival, all corn
was harvested by hand, put-
ting droves of people in the
eld shucking corn around
harvest time. Other siblings
of the picker family had
slowly made their way into
the American Farm scene but
none had created such a stir
by doing quality work in re-
cord times.
Both of these individuals
made their way around the
dealer markets and eventual-
ly arrived at the farm of Bob
Seeger just west of Coldwater,
where they worked diligently
most of their lives. They were
eventually relieved by larger,
faster, more advanced mod-
els and for the last few years
enjoyed the retirement shed
at the Bob Seeger farm. Bob
just recently released them
of their duties and they now
have joined the Agriculture
and Industrial Heritage Cen-
ter at the Old New Idea plant
where they will be training
the younger generation as to
how to make things right.
Both of these indi-
viduals wish to show others
who work today, that is you
are made right by people who
care, you too can enjoy a suc-
cessful and productive life.
They will both be available
for interviews next Saturday
and days to come at the Heri-
tage Center. Drop in some-
time and wish them well.

10 YEARS AGO (2001)
Bruns Building and
Development celebrated
their 50th anniversary on
August 18, 2001, with a
crowd of over 600 visitors at
their business in Cranberry
Prairie. Bob Bruns and his
wife Flo and their seven sons
and one daughter are a living
witness to what you can do
with hard work, fair play and
a dedicated family.
The Coldwater Police
Department has purchased
two Iron Horse bicycles
which will be used to check
on local business places to
be sure their doors are locked
at night and also to patrol
on the grounds of Memorial
Park at night or during the
day.
25 YEARS AGO (1986)
Area high school football
teams are in their final week
of pre-season practice with
the 1986 season openers on
tap Friday night August 29,
when Coldwater travels to
Celina, Marion Local heads
to Versailles and St. Henry
plays host to Miami East.
The Community Hospital
Board of Governors elected
new officers at their regular
meeting August 20. Ed
Elking was elected president,
Ken Wuebker vice president,
Leroy Pohl secretary and
Gertrude Jamieson treasurer.
50 YEARS AGO (1961)
A new self service or
check out counter will be
in operation when Pearces
5 Cent to $1.00 Store has
its grand opening this
weekend. The store has been
completely remodeled since
the first of July.
Egypt and Riffle &
Brockman of Fort Recovery
won the right to play in the
finals of the Coldwater Slo-
Pitch tournament with wins
over St. Anthony and the
Coldwater VFW. The finals
of the 14-team tournament
will be played Friday night
under the lights at Memorial
Park.
I had a most enjoyable
time just the other day while
visiting Baker Woods. Just
north of Coldwater off St.
Anthony road you can enter
Baker Woods for a most
enjoyable hike through the
woods all the way to the
ending at Buscher road. It
was a pleasant trip with
several very large trees to
see. The ones I recognized
were the shagbark hickory
and I remembered from
my childhood just how
good the hickory nuts
are from this tree. Also,
along the paths you can see
several different species
of mushrooms, several in
very bright colors. The
woods is named after Lela
Mae Baker of Coldwater
who donated the property
to the Division of Natural
Areas and Preserves in
1992. A word of caution,
take along plenty of bug
spray, you will need it this
time of year. But even with
the mosquitoes it is a very
nice hike. Be sure and take
the kids as they will also
enjoy seeing the ora and
maybe some wildlife.
I watched some of the
MD Tournament and along
with the pleasant weather
saw some very good
softball. It was announced
this years money raised
will put the tournament
over the one million mark
for M.D. That is great
news and congratulations
to all the committees
through all the years that
worked so hard to make it
all worthwhile.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

You dont need to have young children to be keenly aware that weve
reached that back-to-school time of year. Whether youre shopping for
school supplies or not, you may want to take a cue from this season
to think about getting a little more education yourself specifically,
investment education.
Many people find the language of investing to be confusing, but with
a little effort, you can learn important concepts and principles. And the
more you know about investing, the better off youll be because, in the
investment world as in other areas of life, knowledge is power.
So take just a few minutes to read more on these basic investment
concepts:
Growth You purchase some types of investments with the hope
that their value will rise over time. Of course, over the short term, the
prices of growth-oriented investments can and will fluctuate, sometimes
substantially, and the preservation of your principal is not guaranteed.
Income When you invest in income-oriented or fixed-income
vehicles, you receive income in the form of interest payments. The
market value of fixed-income investments can also fluctuate, but if you
hold them until maturity, you can generally expect to receive the original
principal value.
Investment risk When most people talk about investment
risk, they are usually referring to the possibility of losing money and
that is indeed an ever-present risk. But all investments carry some type
of risk. When you invest in fixed-income investments, for example, you
may incur interest rate risk the risk that the value of your investment
will drop if interest rates rise. Or you may encounter purchasing power
risk the risk that your rate of return may not keep up with inflation.
Risk tolerance Generally speaking, your risk tolerance refers
to what type of investor you are. If youre an aggressive investor, you
may be willing to accept greater risk in exchange for potentially higher
returns, whereas if youre a conservative investor, youll take lower
returns if you can receive greater preservation of principal.
Time horizon Your investment strategy will be partially based on
your time horizon the number of years in which you plan to invest.
Your time horizon will likely stretch into your retirement years.
Diversification Diversification is an important factor in investment
success. By spreading your investment dollars among an array of
investment vehicles, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your
portfolio, although diversification, by itself, cant guarantee a profit or
protect against loss.

Ive Found
My Calling

I may have found my
calling. It seems many
people have talents,
connections, or power
that they can use to help
others. I have none of
these. But I recently
discovered that if you
need someone to share a
glass of wine, Im your
woman. Ive always
considered myself a good
listener and think I have
a compassionate heart.
As do many mothers,
Ive often wondered why
my children dont listen
to my suggestions. My
sister pointed out that
my track record isnt
the best. Good point; I
have done some dumb
things. So maybe there
is a reason why people
dont take my well meant
advice. Once in awhile,
I may hit a lucky streak
and have some wisdom,
but most of the time,
my ideas are about as
brilliant as Winnie the
Poohs. Knowing that I
might have something
to offer though, puts
a new perspective on
things. I probably should
be ready at all times.
When the phone rings,
I must be prepared to
act. I wonder if this is
how Batman felt when
the Batphone rang. Not
that I consider myself in
superhero category, but I
try to take my missions
seriously. I could never
be a first responder or
run with a squad. Im
too squeamish and just
not smart enough to pass
those tests. And forget
anything that requires
physical strength. My
daughter could beat me
in arm wrestling when
she was eight! But its
nice to know that I may
be able to give something
back. That whole pay it
forward idea intrigues
me. Ive been on the
receiving end many times
and would like to do
my part to continue the
chain. So if you need to
commiserate or just want
to share those vacation
photos, Ill be there. Call
me if you want to finish
that bottle of wine. I also
love coffee, like those
colorful fruity drinks
with umbrellas, enjoy a
nice glass of iced tea,
and prefer Diet Coke to
Pepsi. I could probably
even be talked into
drinking a beer. This is
Mercer County after all.
Keep Smiling.
Town, Dog Town,
Frogtown, or
Cassella?

Ray Feltz, born in 1906,
saw an era from horse and
buggies through automobiles
and planes to watching the
U.S. land Astronauts on the
Moon! Ray was talented
in engineering and inventing
and building models, e.g. the
Speicher Trencher, steam
engines, and other machinery.
Ray was equally talented
in the arts, e.g. his reverse
paintings painted on the back
of three layers of glass.
Ray attended the Cassella
grade school and worked in
the family Blacksmith Shop
and for area farmers, until
1923 when he worked at
Mersmans. After marrying
Olive Bensman in 1929,
they lived in Celina and then
moved to Cassella. Ray
worked at New Idea Co.,
1937-1947, and then went to
Pax Steel until 1961. Next
he worked a decade at S
& K Metal Products, until
he retired in 1971. After
retirement, Ray volunteered
with the Mercer County
Historical Society at the
Mercer County Historical
Museum for another couple
of decades.
Ray loved history, and
he told me story after story,
while he was working at the
Museum. One afternoon,
he was telling me about the
communities at Cassella,
locally called Dogtown,
Frogtown and Town.
Town was the name of
the Village where Cassella
now stands on St. Rt. 119
and Cassella-Montezuma
Road.
Dogtown was the
name of the village a quarter
of a mile west of Town,
on St. Rt. 119, where Ray
Feltz, Clarence Feltz, Walter
Schmiesing and Bill Nagel
lived in the 1980s.
Frogtown was the
village a half mile west of
Town, on St. Rt. 119 and
Stelzer Road. On the NE
corner was a cane mill owned
by John Grievenkamp, which
Frank Feltz later bought and
moved to Town. It was
an open copper pan with six
compartments. They cooked
the molasses step by step in
the rst four compartments.
The last two steps were for
nishing; they cooked it at
232 degrees plus. On the NW
corner of the intersection was
a sawmill owned by John
Link. On the SW corner
stood a big brick store owned
by Herman Cron. There was
a pond on the west side of
the store. Several houses
stood west of the pond; all
of the old houses were gone
by the time Ray was telling
this story. On the SE corner
of the intersection stood a
saloon, which was also gone
by that time.
Signs of Town,
Dogtown, and Frogtown
have all disappeared. A
few of the old homes still
stand. New homes and new
businesses are now a part of
Cassella. Two books reect
the history of Cassella.
Ray and Rita (Ranly)
Flaute, volunteers at the
Mercer County Historical
Society and Museum, worked
with other Church Members
in planning the Cassella
history book, Nativity of
Blessed Virgin Mary, 1847-
1997. I would suggest that
this is the most complete
history of Cassella, to have
been written.
Father Ernie Ranly,
C.PP.S., Rita (Ranly) Flautes
brother, wrote a history book,
highlighting his life while
growing up near Cassella:
Pick Up Stuff; Family Farm
Life. This delightful book
gives insight into the daily
activities on a farm this past
century. When I read this
book, I felt as if I were right
there, enjoying life with his
family, as they faced their
daily chores, challenges, and
family laughter.
No matter what the
name, Town, Dog Town,
Frogtown, or Cassella, the
Village has a rich history.

Whats Happening around
the Fort..

Timothy N. Baucher,
originally from the rural Fort
Recovery area, passed away at
his residence in Millersburg,
Indiana, on July 23. He is
survived by his wife Sandy
Johnson Baucher, originally
from Portland, Indiana, and
two children Brandie and Matt.
Tim was the son of Morris and
Leora Baucher and they are
both deceased. He is survived
by the following siblings:
Becky, Julie, Candy, John, and
Sam, all from Fort Recovery;
Deb and Sara from Virginia;
Steve from Dublin, Ohio;
Joe from Goshen, Indiana;
Phil from Jackson Center,
Ohio; and Paul of Millerburg,
Indiana. The cause of death
was not determined.
The St. Peter Neurological
Centers winning number for
the last two weeks were: 844
won by Henry Langenkamp
of St. Henry and 713 won by
Nick Koesters of St. Henry.
THOUGHT FOR THE
WEEK: The famous M&Ms
candy was started in the 1930s
when Forrest Mars, Sr. got the
idea from the soldiers in Civil
War who carried chocolate
pellets covered with a hard
candy shell to prevent them
from melting. The M&M
name came from two giants
in the candy industry, Forrest
Mars, son of candy magnet
Frank Mars and Bruce Murrie,
son of Hersheys Chocolate
president. Why name the
flagship confection after
a rival? First of all, Bruce
Murrie owned 20 percent of the
stake in the M&M project and
Hershey controlled most of the
American wartime chocolate
ration. So most of the original
M&M candy was made from
Hershey Chocolate.
UNTIL NEXT WEEK,
REMEMBER: Be happy, love
one another and remember that
there is a miracle out there that
can change your life.

Observations..... by John Bruns
OFF THE
OFF THE
WALL
WALL
NOT THE BEST WEEK
The economic news from
around the world has not been
good recently, but that has not
been new news for some
time. I often wonder if the
vast array of economic expert
commentators I see on televi-
sion really know how to bal-
ance their own checkbooks.
I have noticed more of the
experts are younger women
who are pleasant to look at
if not to hear. Economic
gloom has been plentiful and
unfortunately will be here to
stay for some time, but it was
incidents in the international
sports scene that were excep-
tionally ugly last week.
The most widely reported
problem in a game occurred
in an exhibition basketball
game between Georgetown
and a Chinese national team.
The NCAA does permit col-
lege teams to periodically trav-
el overseas to play exhibition
basketball against teams from
outside the States. United
States coaches like the concept
because it exposes their stu-
dent athletes to another culture
and the fact that their kids get
extra practice and scrimmage
time is nice also. It also sup-
posedly promotes good will
between countries by means
of friendly competition and
good sportsmanship. The cur-
rent Chinese team had been
ne d recently for ghting and
improper conduct, but as is
normal, no one really knows
who or what started the ght
between the teams. Players
exchanged punches and kicks.
Fans contributed with thrown
bottles and chairs and the game
was canceled with a tie score
in the second half. Not a great
deal of international good will
was achieved during that one.
A soccer match in
Brussels, Belgium, was
recently stopped for a period
of time by the referee. I am
told it is not uncommon for
fans of the opposing team
to station themselves behind
the other goalie and attempt
to distract the player with
taunts. The goal keeper in
this contest was Japanese
and the fans chanted
Kawashima - Fukushima,
the site of the earthquake
and tsunami where over
20,000 of his countrymen
were killed. The goalie was
in tears and said the fans
could say anything else, but
not that.
In Mexico City another
Division I soccer game was
stopped when a gunght
broke out just outside the
stadium between a police
patrol and possible elements
of a drug cartel. Players and
ofcials ran for cover and
hundreds of fans ran onto the
eld, avoiding the area of the
gunre.
Certain things, like sweet
corn and sports, are much
better if purchased and con-
sumed locally. Our local
high school football starts
tomorrow and the other fall
sports are in full gear.

Calebs Crossing
By: Geraldine Brooks
Reviewed by: Norma

Two things drew me to
Calebs Crossing and
that included my interest in
historical ction and books
about strong women. Both
delivered a powerful story
that kept my attention to
the end. I equally read and
listened to this book on audio
C/D. The reader did an
excellent job of making the
story so real and convincing.
I will look for more books
narrated by Jennifer Ehle.
She has a quiet, slow,
melodious voice that was
perfect for this novel.
Bethia Mayeld is the
daughter of a missionary
whose family resides
on the island of todays
Marthas Vineyard when
it was inhabited by the
Wampanoag Indian tribe.
It is 1665 and Bethia
learns the native language
by secretly listening and
observing her father teach
her brother, Makepeace.
Bethia is very quick witted
and learns easily in a time
when women are expected
to be keepers of the home
and child bearers. Bethia
meets the native Caleb while
both were foraging for food
and rewood in the wilds of
her home. They are young
preteens and become best of
friends while he teaches her
many things and aids her in
her exploration. This time
in the book was one of my
most memorable as I can
imagine the two developing
a friendship as they hike
and explore the shore and
woods.
Bethias father tutors
Caleb and she looks forward
to each visit to their home.
Her brother and Caleb,
the rst Native American
to do so, enter Cambridge
to prepare for studies at
Harvard. The father passes
away and Bethia must
leave Marthas Vineyard
to become an indentured
servant in the headmasters
home. This permits her
brother to attend the school.
The brother is not the scholar
that Caleb is and he struggles
at the school. Bethia loves
learning, and positions
herself to eavesdrop in on
the classes thus continuing
her education. Political
principles come to play a
part in the schools decision
on the top graduate and
Caleb is not permitted to be
the top student because he is
of Indian descent.
True is the fact that a
Wampanoag Tribe member
did attend and graduate from
Harvard in the late 1660s but
other than that the author has
created a believable story
of what ifs and what might
have been.
Many historical
happenings are woven into
the story that covers two
generations. The ending is
unsettling, but given the
times, probably close to
what might have happened.
I highly recommend the
novel Calebs Crossing
and encourage all to give
contemplation to just what
Caleb crossed to and the
deep thought that goes
with it. Each must decide
for himself. Calebs
Crossing is located in the
new ction of the library and
on audio C/D.

FARM EQUIPMENT
When two-time NASCAR
Cup Champion Tony Stewart
purchased Eldora Speedway
from the legendary Earl
Baltes in the Fall of 2004,
he confessed that he had big
shoes to fill. He admitted
that no one could completely
duplicate the Baltes style, but
Stewart set out on a mission
to preserve the famed Eldora
Experience as much as he
could, with continued respect
for the foundation that Baltes
had built Eldora upon.
Aware of Baltes flair for
the unheard of, Stewart and
his Eldora team announced
earlier this year a new
concept for dirt Late Model
racing a three-wide start
coming down for the green
flag, with up to 33 cars in the
field. Both ideas represent
firsts for Eldora.
Appropriately enough,
as a tribute to the 90-year
old Baltes, this race will
be conducted as part of
the annual Baltes Classic
on Sunday, September
4. Stewart introduced the
Baltes Classic in 2008 as his
way to give annual tribute to
renowned man who almost
single-handedly turned
a cornfield into the most
prominent grassroots facility
in the Nation. At that time,
Stewart unveiled a life-
style bronzed sculpture of
Earl and his wife Berneice,
which sits at the entrance
of the speedway, to forever
welcome fans to Eldora.
With WIX Filters on
board as sponsor of the
UMP (United Midwestern
Promoters) sanctioned event,
Stewarts promotional team
came up with 33 as the
common denominator for the
unique event. The race will
go 33 laps, start 33 cars,
pay $3300 to win and $330
minimum to start.
Stewart quipped, now
THIS is something that Earl
would be doing if he still had
control of Eldora, and were
excited about the buzz it has
created among the racing
fraternity and its fan base.
It is truly hard to come up
with an idea that Earl hasnt
already tried, but were
convinced this is something
that definitely complements
the Baltes flair.
Apprehension personifies
the mood of the drivers,
as is always the case when
something new is introduced.
To ease the concerns
somewhat, the start of the
event will move from the exit
of turn four to the middle of
turns three and four. This
move will allow the teams
to progress up to speed in a
safer manner, rather than full
bore out of the turn.
For the drivers, it will be a
full points event towards not
only the Sunoco American
Late Model Series title, but
the coveted Eldora Speedway
Late Model title as well; and
the final tune-up for the
famed World 100, which will
invade Eldoras hallowed
high-banks the following
weekend.
Joining the card for a
tripleheader program will
be the UMP sanctioned
Modifieds and Eldoras
Stock Car division. For the
Modifieds and Stock Cars,
the Sunday special will serve
as their final points meet
towards the cumulative title.
Three-wide start designed to
complement Baltes promotional air
Dear Neighbor,
As a state representative, there is
nothing that I take more pride in than
the quality of our schools and the role
our teachers play in preparing the
next generation for the working world.
Education is the backbone of any com-
munity, and that fact certainly rings
true right here in Ohio. For this reason,
I am committed to ensuring that our
education system is as strong, compre-
hensive and balanced as possible.
The state budget that was recently
signed into law by the governor priori-
tized our schools in a comprehensive,
multi-faceted manner. We invested
in our schools by ensuring that all
school districts receive at least what
they received in state aid last year,
even when the state was faced with
a staggering $8 billion decit. We
also included a performance-based pay
system for teachers, which will reward
teachers for success in the classroom
and ensure that our schools are staffed
with motivated, passionate educators.
The budget also expanded school
choice options in Ohio by increas-
ing the number of and eligibility for
vouchers. This effort will not only give
parents more options for their children,
but it will also help motivated students
from underperforming schools receive
a better, higher quality education.
The Legislature has also repealed
several unfunded or underfunded man-
dates that were forced onto our school
districts during the previous General
Assembly, including the requirement
for all-day, every-day kindergarten in
every Ohio school district. We found it
important to give school districts more
control over their nances and decide
for themselves if they are nancially
able to afford this program.
We also acknowledged the unpre-
dictability of Ohios weatherespe-
cially our often-dangerous winters
and restored Ohios excusable calam-
ity days to ve. We also gave school
districts more exibility by providing
two new options to make up for calam-
ity days: e-days (teachers prepare
and distribute classroom materials
via the Internet) and blizzard bags
(lesson plans and other materials are
prepared in advance pending inclem-
ent weather so students can complete
assignments from home).
The link below will lead you to
a brief survey that will help keep
me aware of the issues that are most
important to you and our area.

Education is our gateway to a
prosperous future as a state, and I am
pleased that the Ohio House has truly
put students rst during this General
Assembly. Thank you for your phone
calls, e-mails and letters that have kept
me informed and guided my decision-
making in Columbus. If you have other
ideas for strengthening our commu-
nity, I may be reached by calling (614)

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated
BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL
Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found
by going to: www.propet.org.
If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.

Mercer Health announced
today that local native
Jennifer Bills, CPNP
(Certied Pediatric Nurse
Practitioner), has joined the
practice of Dr. Nazih Dabis
whose ofce is located at the
Community Medical Center,
950 S. Main St., Celina.
Bills states, I will
be focusing on well
child management and
incorporating a holistic
approach to Pediatric
Care. I will be monitoring
growth and development
especially during the rst
three years of life as well
as monitoring nutrition,
academic development, social
growth and family well-
being. In addition to well
management, I am able to
treat acute health conditions
such as ear infections and
strep throat. Finally, I can
monitor stable chronic
conditions such as asthma;
collaborate with specialists;
and prescribe certain types of
medications.
Jennifer (Spoltman) Bills
earned her Bachelors of
Science Degree in Nursing
at The Ohio State University
in 2004. Her rst position
out of college was at Miami
Valley Hospital in Dayton,
Ohio, where she worked
as a registered nurse in the
Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit. In 2006, she was
nominated for the Miami
Valley Hospital Excellence
in Nursing Award.
In 2007, Bills moved closer
to her roots when she became
the Service Coordinator for
the Auglaize County Help
Me Grow Program. At the
same time, she became a
Childbirth Educator at the
Upper Valley Medical Center
in Troy, Ohio.
In February, 2008, Bills
joined the nursing staff at
Mercer Health. She has
worked in the hospitals
Obstetric Department
and helped develop a
Hypoglycemia Policy for
high risk infants.
Throughout this time,
her interests were drawn to
improving childrens health.
She says, I have a son with
some chronic health issues,
and I wanted to help him and
others improve their health.
I was already a registered
nurse, but I was inspired to
further my education.
This desire led her to
complete a Masters of
Science Degree in Nursing
in 2011 with a primary focus
in Pediatric Primary Care at
Wright State University. She
passed board certication to
become a Certied Pediatric
Nurse Practitioner in July of
this year.
As part of her training
to become a CPNP, Bills
worked with preceptors
to examine, educate, and
treat pediatric patients at
Mercer Health, Nationwide
Childrens Hospital in
Columbus, and The Pediatric
Group in Piqua, Ohio. For all
clinical rotations, she earned
an excellent rating from
the preceptors and university
instructors for clinical and
academic performance.
She says, Throughout
my training, I was able to
experience pediatric care
in both the urban and rural
setting. The different settings
helped to develop skills
ranging from suturing and
lab value interpretations to
performing comprehensive
physical and developmental
assessments. I was able to
examine and treat pediatric
patients in a variety of settings
ranging from infectious
disease to cardiology and
from tuberculosis to ear, nose
and throat clinics. Finally, I
was able to develop a better
understanding of both the
referral system and services
available both locally as well
as in the surrounding cities.
Bills says, Im excited
about joining Dr. Dabis.
His years of experience and
expertise will be a great
opportunity to expand my
knowledge. Together, we will
treat patients ranging from
newborns to young adults up
to age 21. People often think
that pediatrics only refers to
the very young, but we also
treat young adults.
Persons wanting to set up
an appointment to see Bills
can call 419-586-7940. Her
ofce is in with Dr. Dabis
at the Community Medical
Center, 950 S. Main Street,
Celina.
Certied Pediatric Nurse
Practitioner Joins Local Pediatrician
Dr. Nazih Dabis welcomes Jennifer Bills, CPNP (Certied
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner), to his practice located at the
Community Medical Center, 950 S. Main Street, Celina.
On Wednesday, August
17, at 9:49 p.m., ofcers
from the Coldwater Police
Department performed a
trafc stop of a male sub-
ject who had warrants for
his arrest at E. Elizabeth
Street at N. Fifth Street.
Nicholas M. Schramm, 19,
of 901 Chelsea Drive Cold-
water, had two warrants for
his arrest from a previous
incident. During the arrest
attempt, Schramm pulled
away from ofcers and re-
fused to follow their orders
so they could search and
handcuff him.
Ofcers then pulled
out a Taser and ordered
Schramm to the ground.
Schramm was assisted to
the ground and then hand-
cuffed and searched. Dur-
ing the search, ofcers
pulled a cellophane baggie
from Schramms pocket
containing an unidentied
pill. When asked what the
pill was, Schramm said it
wasnt his.
Schramm was secured
in the rear of the patrol car
and a canine unit was re-
quested from the Mercer
County Sheriffs Ofce.
The canine unit alerted to
the drivers side door of the
vehicle but nothing further
was located inside the vehi-
cle. The vehicle was towed
and impounded.
Schramm was then
transported to the Mercer
County Detention Center
on charges of resisting ar-
rest and for the warrants
which were for Obstruct-
ing Ofcial Business and
Disorderly Conduct. Once
an analysis is completed on
the unidentied pill, more
charges may follow if it
is found to be a controlled
substance.
The charges of obstruct-
ing ofcial business and
disorderly conduct stem
from an incident that oc-
curred on Monday, August
8, at 3 a.m. at the intersec-
tion of N. Sixth Street at
Plum Street. Ofcers ob-
served two people in the
middle of the street and two
people on the sidewalk.
Schramm was observed
arguing with another male
in a turbulent manner. Of-
cers spoke with Schramm
and the other male. Both
males appeared to be in-
toxicated and had an odor
of an alcoholic beverage
coming from their persons.
As ofcers were attempting
to identify the males, they
started to walk backwards.
They were told to stay on
the sidewalk where they
were. Schramm would not
listen to the ofcers orders
but the other male stayed.
Schramm was again or-
dered to get back on the
sidewalk and as the ofcer
turned his back to check on
the other ofcer, Schramm
ed from the scene.
Ofcers had three other
subjects so they could not
leave the scene to pursue
Schramm. Ofcers led
charges later and warrants
for Schramms arrest were
issued.
The police department
would like to thank the
Mercer County Sheriffs
Ofce for their help with
their canine unit.
Update: 08-23-2011
The pill located in the
pocket of Nicholas M. Sch-
ramm ,19, 901 Chelsea Dr.,
Coldwater, on Wednesday,
August 17, was identi-
ed as Oxycodone which
is a controlled substance.
Possession of a controlled
substance of that type is a
Felony of the Fifth Degree.
Schramm was arrested on
Monday, August 22, on a
warrant issued by Celina
Municipal Court for Posses-
sion of Drugs and is being
held in the Mercer County
Detention Center. There is
no bond on the charge, Sch-
ramm will be held until he
makes an initial appearance
in Celina Municipal Court.
Coldwater Police news
Thad Forsthoefel,
Coldwater High School
teacher, spent 10 days in
Prague, Czech Republic,
early this summer. He went
to observe the educational
system and to study Czech
history. Old Prague dates
back to 1295 and contains
almost 400 churches.
Thad had photos that
illustrated the architecture
of the churches and other
buildings. Prague has been
modernized in the past ve
years and now has great
public transportation.
The school, where Thad
taught four days, is quite
advanced technologically
and the cost is supported by
the European Union. It was
a specialized trade school
for electronics. Teacher
salaries there average about
$12,000 per year. He found
that 80% of the teachers
at this particular school
were retirees who had
been rehired. In the Czech
system students decide at
age 13 which type of high
school they will attend.
Kiwanis News
Deb Hemmelgarn,
Executive Director of the
Mercer County Red Cross,
spoke to the Coldwater
Kiwanis Club August
9. The Mercer County
Chapter is a volunteer-led
organization a 501 (c) (3)
non-prot which receives
no government funding. Its
largest fundraiser is Red
Cross Kart Racing. Twenty-
one local teams participate
and they have local sponsors.
Hemmelgarn said the Red
Cross averages about 75
blood drives each year
generating 5000 units of
blood. One unit can save up
to three lives. An individual
can donate up to seven times
each year. The Red Cross
also taught 2200 people life-
saving techniques, provided
assistance to families who
suffered res, oods, and
other disasters, and provided
emergency communications
for military families.
On August 16 the
Coldwater Kiwanis Club
heard about the Coldwater
High School Girls Soccer
Team. Head Coach Scott
Brinkman described his
background in the sport as
a player, referee and coach,
introduced two senior
players Carly Schlater
and Bridgette Kremer, and
discussed the progress of
the team during its three-
year existence. He noted
that during the rst year,
when most of the team was
new to the sport, he had to
introduce the basics of the
game. He says his players
are coachable and athletic
and he sees a good deal
of improvement. This year
he has 11 seniors and 19
underclassmen on the team.
They will play 16 varsity
games and almost as many JV
games. Coach Brinkmans
philosophy includes these
points: everyone must
play; practice must look
like soccer; work to build
character; and have fun.
The program receives good
support from the players,
from their parents, and from
the school. He said their
playing eld (located near
the village ofces) has some
landscaping improvements,
a concession stand, and a
new scoreboard.
