LUNCHEON BRIEFING

Preparing California for Change: Adapta3on strategies for

responding to local eects of ocean acidica3on

WHEN: September 1, 2011 12:00-1:30pm (lunch provided) WHERE: California Chamber of Commerce (1215 K St. 14th oor, California Room) WHAT: A brieng to explore the causes and consequences of increasingly acidied waters o our coast and how coastal communiSes can prepare for and adapt to these changes. WHO: Meg Caldwell, JD Center for Ocean SoluSons Dr. Jim Barry Monterey Bay Aquarium Research InsStute Dr. Chris Harley University of BriSsh Columbia

ABOUT THE EVENT

In California and around the world coastal and ocean pH conSnues to drop in a process known as ocean acidicaSon. Increasingly acidic waters directly aect a variety of species, with the potenSal for large impacts on Californias shellsh, aquaculture and other ocean-dependent industries. Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide is the primary cause of the decrease in open ocean pH. In coastal waters, addiSonal factors such as runo, polluSon, erosion and upwelling contribute to the problem. As new science emerges about the full scope and scale of potenSal impacts, local measures have been idenSed that can be taken today to help miSgate the risks posed to Californias coastal economies. Dr. Jim Barry will introduce the science of ocean acidicaSon, describing the processes, drivers and implicaSons of changes to Californias coastal waters, including the potenSal threat to commercially important coastal species. Dr. Harley will present case studies of species and stocks o our coast to illustrate how marine organisms respond to these condiSons. He will discuss whether some species may be able to adapt to the changes acidicaSon is bringing and present emerging research that can help guide management acSons and aect sheries producSvity. Ms. Caldwell will close with a discussion of the legal and management tools that are already available to help California communiSes address the local eects and manage the risks of ocean acidicaSon.

Please join us for a lively presenta2on and discussion on ocean acidica2on in California the drivers, impacts, and available solu2ons.
