Advanced Underbalanced Well Design

Discipline: Level: Well Construction/Drilling Specialized

Primary Instructor(s): Martin Culen Leo Arseneault P Suryanarayana Ravi Vaidya

DESIGNED FOR Operator and service company personnel interested in transforming a basic awareness of underbalanced drilling into a comprehensive understanding of this emerging technology to improve their ability to optimize engineering well designs and effectively manage critical UBD projects.

YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO Effectively screen candidate reservoirs for potential application Quantify project benefits and costs using advanced reservoir valuation techniques Create multiphase flow models using Neotec Wellflo-7 software Apply flow model results to optimize well design choices Specify and select UB equipment Select optimum UB fluid systems Interface rig with UB surface equipment Safely manage rigsite operations Maintain UB well conditions throughout operations Detect and mitigate common operational problems

ABOUT THE COURSE This course comprehensively addresses all major aspects of underbalanced well technology, design, and operations. The start of the course covers advanced methods of screening and valuation from a reservoir asset perspective. Planning and engineering methods are emphasized as essential prerequisites to successful project implementation. The course concludes with coverage of equipment, site management, rig modification, and operational practices needed to implement the technology in an effective and safe manor.

About the Instructor(s):

MARTIN CULEN joined the Middle East offices of Blade Energy in the fall of 2005, after 6 years with Precision Drilling. Prior to joining Blade, Martin occupied three roles for Precision in the Eastern hemisphere. His last role was Regional Business Development Manager for Precisions three core product lines Underbalanced Drilling, MWD/LWD services and Wireline. Martin joined Precisions Middle East offices in the spring of 2002 to work as regional Technical Manager for underbalanced drilling. His duties with Precision in UBD began in the UK office of Northland Energy Services in January 2000, as a Project Engineer. He specialized in the development and project management of offshore separation technologies. Before his move to the UK, Martin gained extensive experience in integrated UBD equipment design and fabrication with Tesco Drilling Corporation in Calgary, as well as UBD engineering and coil tubing drilling with Nowsco Well Service. He also conducted research for Exxon and the University of Alberta on fibreglass reinforced plastic production tubulars. Martin received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the U of A in 1994.

LEO ARSENEAULT has over 13 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. He joined the Middle East offices of Blade Energy Partners in early 2006. Leo has been involved with many facets of underbalanced and managed pressure drilling including project scoping, detailed engineering and feasibility studies, project initiation and project management, through to wellsite supervision and operations management. Before joining Blade, Leo worked in Precision Energy Services Middle East office for two years as the regional Technical Manager for underbalanced and managed pressure drilling. Prior to PES, Leo was directly involved with the Shell Southern North Sea underbalanced drilling operations for over five years including offshore operations supervision, onshore project management and as part of the rig operations management team. Prior to moving overseas, he worked for Nowsco Well Service / BJ Services Ltd. in Canada. Leo received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1993.

P.V. (SURI) SURYANARAYANA has seventeen years of professional experience including an extensive background in tubular mechanics, Coiled Tubing technology, multiphase flow modeling and probabilistic design (Quantitative Risk Analysis) techniques. He has extensive experience in the design, engineering and implementation of complex UBD projects. Lately, Suri has been very active in reservoir-based probabilistic valuation of UBD, and quantitative assessment of the impact of formation damage during conventional drilling. Suri is one of the founding partners of Blade Energy and is a member of several organizations including SPE. He is an SPE Distinguished Lecturer for the 2006-2007 seasons. He has authored or co-authored over 40 archival papers in the industry; several of them in CT technology and UBD. Education credits include a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University.

RAVI VAIDYA has diverse experience of 15+ years ranging from fundamental research to application of technology in the area of SCAL, PVT/EOS modeling, compositional reservoir simulation and software development. He is a Reservoir Eng. Advisor at Blade Energy Partners, a high-end engineering consulting company. His main tasks have been reservoir simulation, fullfield and sector/single-well studies, and reservoir engineering application of Underbalanced drilling. He also has assisted in studies on the optimization of the value of a portfolio of assets (oil and gas) and the strategic allocation of resources (such as, capital) for the development of new opportunities which are under engineering and economic constraints. At Mobil he was a teamlead for the Fluid Flow Technology group and part of a team that brought Mobil an R&D 100 award. He received his Ph.D. from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor for his thesis in the area of formation damage. Ravi has over 20 publications and presentations.
