Tentou, tentou, at conseguir, muito bem! No recusaram a nova tarefa.

Precisam respeitar as diferenas, lutar contra o preconceito, adquirir hbitos saudveis e construir amizades slidas. So apenas impresses e interpretaes dos adultos. Praise the right way Recently a small group of children went through a very interesting test. Psychologists have proposed a task of average difficulty, but that children would perform without major problems. All managed to finish the job after some time. They were then divided into two groups. The group was praised for their intelligence. "Wow, how smart you are!", "How clever you are!", "How proud I feel to see how great you are, boy! ... and others praise the ability of each child. Group B was praised for their effort. "Girl, I liked seeing how much you spent on the task", "Boy, it was nice to have seen your effort!", "Wow, you showed such persistence. You tried and tried until you have achieved your goal, well done! "... and other work related praises and not to the child itself. After this phase, a new task of equal difficulty as the first proposal was for two groups of children. They were not required to accomplish the task, they could choose whether they wanted to or not without any consequence. The children's answers were surprising. The vast majority of children in group A simply refused the second task. The children did not want to even try. On the other hand, almost all children in group B agreed to try. Group B did not refuse the new job. The explanation is simple and helps us understand how to praise our children and our students. Humans flee from experiences that may be unpleasant. The "smart" kids do not want the frustration of failing to perform a task for it may change the image that adults have of them. "If I can not, they will no longer say I'm intelligent." The "hardworking" are not afraid to try, because even if they fail their effort is praised. We know many cases of young people considered intelligent that do not pass the entrance exam, while those young failures achieve get victory. The people considered intelligent rely too much on their ability and fail to prepare themselves properly. The others knew that if they hadn t had an excellent preparation they wouldn t be approved, and rightfully so, studied more, answered and solved more exercises, read and strengthened themselves in each subject. However, that's not all. In addition to classroom content, our children

need to learn the values, principles and ethics. They need to respect differences, fight against prejudice to acquire healthy habits and build strong friendships. They do not learn these things by fragile praises, focused on each others egos. They need to be constantly encouraged to do so. This is done with praise, feedback and stimulated to show the expected behavior. Our children need to hear phrases like: "I'm glad you helped him, you have a good heart," "Congratulations my son for telling the truth in spite of being scared ... you're ethical, "" I was proud of you for including that young girl rather than excluding her as some colleagues have done ... you are supportive, "" That's right son, letting your cousin play with your game was pretty cool, you're a good friend. " This kind of praise is based on real actions and reinforces the child's behavior and he/she will tend to repeat them. This is not parental "tactics" it is real encouragement. On the other hand, praising superficial things is a current tendency. "Oh, how beautiful you are, sweetie," "I think you're very smart my son," "You are so charming," "what pretty hair," "your eyes are so beautiful." Compliments such as these are not based on facts, behaviors, or attitudes. They are only adult s impressions and interpretations. Shortly, these children will be using emotional blackmail, tantrums, tricks and "charms." When adults, they will not have developed resistance to frustration and they will she emotional fragility. Men and women with strong and healthy personalities are as oaks that grow on mountain slopes. The winds do not knock them down, because they grew between them. They are leafy, large canopy and the green leaves show strength because they fed of fertile land. That our children receive the wind and fertilized land through our firmness and love.
