Bellarmine in New York

2008-2011

Established May 2008

July 2011 Thank you for reading this first-edition report! We are honored to present this introduction to Bellarmine in New York. We have grown and accomplished a great deal over the past three years, and we want to proudly share our happiness for all that Bell in NY has become. We see this report as a small sign of the teamwork and bonds of friendship that are enriching our group as we continue to evolve. We each have lives and careers. And we have embraced the added challenge of settling in an area far, and far different, from the San Jose metro area. We love New York, and yet deeply appreciate the foundation Bellarmine provided that enables us toas Sinatra saidmake it there. It is tremendously meaningful for us to have an alumni community that enriches our lives here while providing a strong link to a place so important to our past. It has been truly rewarding to contribute to the founding and development of Bellarmine in New York. In these pages we share some of our recurring and most significant social, cultural, spiritual and fundraising activities. We hope that this generates excitement, momentum, appreciation and support for what we have done, what we stand for, and what we hope to accomplish in the future. We cannot continue as a vibrant alumni organization without each of those things; and we hope others take up the challenge of helping us make Bellarmine in New York more than it already is, for a long, long time to come. We thank our fellow alumni who have helped get Bellarmine in New York where it is today. We have seen the strength of the Bellarmine community, through the birth of the Bell in NY community. We look forward to seeing a new generation of alums build upon the foundation that we hope our efforts have helped firmly create. We welcome your feedback and participation. God Bless and Go Bells, Thomas Kearney, 97; Chris Kearns, 85; Donald Nadalin, 00

Participation in the Grand Reunion

Last weekend was my first Bellarmine reunion, and it truly exceeded all my expectations. Tom Simon 85, Princeton, NJ There were a number of my old friends from the Class of 1980 at the reunionmany I hadn't seen since graduation, and it's a testament to how strong friendships formed at Bellarmine are that we were able to pick up where we left off. Annual East Coast College Tour

During the February ski week of 2010 and 2011, small groups of current Bellarmine juniors travelled to New York to visit local area universities like Fordham and Drexel. The trip is funded entirely by alumni in the New York area, and as a group, we have made a commitment to fund this annual trip for the foreseeable future.

We work with several dedicated Bellarmine staff members to make this trip happen, including: John Callan 89, director of alumni relations; Joe Romano, college counselor; and Sonya Arriola, diversity director. Here is an excerpt from Mrs. Arriolas 2010 article Opening Doors from Coast to Coast.
Our inaugural East Coast tour left on a red-eye flight the evening of February 13, 2010, but there was no time for sleeping once the three juniors touched ground with college counselor Joe Romano. Over the next four days, the students visited five colleges in New York and Philadelphia: Fordham University, Saint Johns University, Drexel University, Saint Josephs University and Hofstra University New York City is a fast-paced town and our alums made sure that our students experienced New York City up close and personal.

Between college visits, the students were immersed in some traditional East Coast experiences, courtesy of many members of the NYC Alumni. Their first day in New York, Pierce Stanley 06, took the Bellarmine delegation on a walking tour of the Financial District where they saw the classic New York landmarks of the Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, Trinity Church, Ground Zero and Battery Park. Several days later, they were offered a firsthand look at the financial capital of the world with a tour of Bloomberg Headquarters facilitated by Jeff Kearns 92 followed by a tour of the New York Stock Exchange. Students worked side by side with traders at Bernstein Global Wealth Management, and quickly learned of the responsibilities and risks associated with managing investment portfolios. Another Bell alum,Geronimo Desumala 02, facilitated a tour of the United Nations Headquarters and a meeting with Ambassador John Hirsch. Students met and chatted with several members of the Bellarmine New York Alumni Chapter at various events that week. At a small dinner with nine alums early in the week, the students chatted with mentors that were paired with the

students. Teddy Smith 04, Waine Tam 97 and Thomas Kearney 97 had reached out to the students in the weeks leading up to the trip via email and phone, and shared their insights about life after Bellarmine and their experiences living on the East Coast.
