The Story Kingdom Notes:

In Advance
Recruit a Helper to operate the music and sound effects CDs and participate in the lesson as Goliath (see pages 45). Determine which songs you will use and be prepared to lead the children in singing. Song suggestions: Upbeat song for transition from Activity Stations to the Creative Bible Teaching The Happy Dance (Reach Up High CD) Touch the Sky (Touch the Sky CD) Dance, Shout & Sing (Touch the Sky CD) Determine whether or not you will use the sound effects CD. If you prefer not to use the CD, you might make the sound yourself, invite the kids to make the sound with you, or omit the sound altogether, and modify the lesson accordingly. Gather the supplies as listed in the supply list above and arrange your classroom as follows: Place the royal box on the table with tablecloth, and the King puppet under the table as in Lesson 9. Place the Bible, robe, rock, and soldiers helmet or other Goliath prop in the royal box. Print the royal game cards and place them in the royal box. Print matching cards. (There are four identical cards per pageyou need only two cards from each page.) Copy cards onto cardstock, two of each card for a total of eight cards, and place them under the table. Prepare the materials that will be given to each of the children. To prepare the stickers, print or copy the pages onto Avery label sheets #5294. Consider cutting the stickers apart for easier distribution. Print out the lesson and practice the teaching time.

Teachers Prep
READ 1 SAMUEL 17. Jeff has five children. Recently, he had to do a very hard thing: he helped three of his children move. Jeff s oldest daughter moved into her very first apartment after college. Jeff s second-oldest daughter returned to college for her senior year and his oldest son moved 30 miles away for his first year of college. None of these moves came easily or naturally for him. Letting his children go was difficult, but Jeff knew he could trust God. He knew God was on His side. Jeff discovered that God could help him do this very hard thing. This week, stop and take a breath. As you inhale, think about all the difficult things you have to do. As you exhale, ask God for help. Take another breath. As you breathe this time, smile. Smile knowing God is on your side, always helping you, and never leaving you to handle difficult things by yourself.

UNIT 3:

The Story Kingdom

TEACHER:

The Israelites were afraid of Goliath. Show me your afraid face. [Kids make afraid faces.] No one wanted to fight Goliath. It was too hard to fight a big giant, so all the Israelites ran away when he came. But there was a little boy who was not afraid of Goliath. His name was David. [Walk puppet up to Goliath and continue narrating the story and talking in kings voice as David.]
TEACHER:

David talked to Goliath and said, I am David! I am a shepherd. I take care of the sheep. And though I may be little, Im not afraid of you. Goliath couldnt believe what David told him. He said . . .
HELPER:

Well, you should be afraid of me, David! How is a little boy like you going to fight a strong, powerful, giant like me?
TEACHER:

But David knew he could do it with Gods help. David pick up a rock and threw it at Goliath. [Pull out the rock and pretend to throw it.]
HELPER:

[React as if youve been hit in the head with the rock. Reach up, touch forehead, and fall over.]
TEACHER:

The rock flew through the air and hit Goliath in the head. Goliath fell down! God helped David! [Helper returns to manning the CD player as Teacher reviews story with kids.]
TEACHER:

Friends, who helped David? [God.] Even though it was hard, David knew God would help him. God will help us do hard things too. God [point up] helps me [point thumbs to self] do hard [pound fists together] things [pound fists together]. Lets say that together. God [point up] helps me [point thumbs to self] do hard [pound fists together] things [pound fists together]. Lets say it in our quiet voices. God [point up] helps me [point thumbs to self] do hard [pound fists together] things [pound fists together]. [Take David robe off puppet and put crown back on.]
KING:

It may be hard for me to be nice to Queen Henrietta, but I can ask God to help me.

This is the time for you and the children to build community. A great way to let the kids know you care about them as individuals is to ask them questions about themselves. GIVE each child a snack to eat. GIVE each child a Key Concept sticker to put on their shirt while they are eating their snack. TELL kids: God helps us. GIVE each child a coloring sheet to color while they wait to be picked up. ASK each child a question or two about themselves: Are you going to obey your mom and dad this week? How will you obey? Do you think you can pray to God and ask Him to help you obey?
