1.3: System Requirements

Any modern PC is more than adequate to run LinearPlus. The minimum recommended specification is as follows: Pentium 4 class processor 512Mb RAM 50Mb free disk space XGA (1024x768) display 17" monitor LinearPlus is a Windows application and can be run on the following operating systems: Windows 2000 Windows XP Home and Professional Windows Vista Windows Server 2003 This system will not run on older versions of Windows, and will run as a 32 bit application on 64 bit versions of XP, Vista and Windows Server.

1.4: Getting a license file

In order for LinearPlus to run, you must obtain a valid license file and register it in your system. A standalone license locks the software to the machine on which it is run and is not transferable to any other machine. This license is required in order to complete the installation of LinearPlus and should, therefore be requested before installing it. To generate a license file you will need to provide PCF with the Lock Code for the machine that will be running LinearPlus To obtain the Lock Code, insert the LinearPlus CD-ROM into the appropriate machine. If the installation utility does not start automatically, use Explorer to navigate to the CD-ROM and double-click on SETUP.EXE. You should be presented with the first page of the Installation Wizard:

2.2: Changing License details on a standalone system

It may be necessary at some stage to change the license details for your LinearPlus system if for example you originally installed the product with a trial license and now wish to register a full license. You do this using the System Configuration Utility, which can be started by selecting Programs/PCF Limited/LinearPlus/License Configuration from the Start Menu. You will see a dialog box like this:

This utility allows you to install and remove license codes. If you wish to find out what other functions are available in this utility, hit the Help button or the F1 key to bring up the online help system; in almost all cases the supplied default values will be fine. To install a license, click the Add button. You will see a small dialog like this:

Enter the path to the license file, and click OK. The utility will analyse the license file and if successful, will add the license code(s) it finds to the list. Once you have done this, click Save and Exit to save your changes and close down the utility. Please refer to the Troubleshooting section later in this Guide if you see message boxes warning of license problems after using this utility.

4: FAQs
4.1: Installer
When I insert the LinearPlus CD-ROM in my PC the Installation Wizard does not start. How do I install the product? You can install LinearPlus by using Explorer to view the contents of the CD-ROM and then double-clicking on SETUP.EXE.

4.2: License management

I get a message saying "The license for feature LinearPlus on this machine has expired" You will need to obtain a new license from PCF to be able to run LinearPlus again. When I start LinearPlus, my machine pops up the Dialup Connection dialog as if it is trying to connect to the Internet. On installation, an environment variable is set to prevent LinearPlus from searching the network for a license. It may be that the variable has been removed from your machine. You need to check for and, if missing, define a system environment variable on your machine called LSFORCEHOST and set it to NO_NET. I get a message saying, "Access denied due to clock tamper detection" The SentinelLM License Manager is designed to detect any attempts to "rewind" the system clock in order to bypass the expiration date of a time-limited license. If you see this message and no such tampering has taken place, please contact PCF for assistance.

4.3: System startup

Why does my system now pop up a dialog saying, "license expires in nn days"? This message means exactly what it says when there is less than one month until the expiry date of a time limited license, LinearPlus will issue a warning message every time you start the application. My system displays "System Error abnormal termination" and a Message window containing "Cannot access message file 'QEIDIR:\run\qei.mfl' - File does not exist" This will occur if LinearPlus is unable to locate the correct set of registry data. If you are comfortable working with the registry, you may be able to use the information in Appendix A to determine the exact cause of the problem, remembering to take a backup first. If not, please contact PCF for assistance. My system hangs while displaying a Message window containing "(PML 41) Unable to open macro file - File does not exist Database no.=" This will occur if LinearPlus cannot find the macro pointed to by the STARTUP variable in the registry. If you are comfortable working with the registry, you may be able to use the information in Appendix A to determine the exact cause of the problem, remembering to take a backup first. If not, please contact PCF for assistance. Please also note that by typing "quit y" at the database prompt you can exit the system cleanly without having to terminate it.

LinearPlus v3.5 Installation Guide

Appendix A - Registry keys used by LinearPlus

When LinearPlus is installed, the registry is loaded with data reflecting the installation. This data is stored under a branch of the registry with the path name:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PCF\LinearPlus\<version>

where <version> is the version number of LinearPlus being installed (currently 3.5). The sections shown below will then correspond to keys below this point in the hierarchy. Entries in the registry that are modified as a result of executing LinearPlus - such things as the visibility of the toolbar, and status bar; default spacing in SBC layouts and so on - are always stored in the branch:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PCF\LinearPlus\<version>

As this branch is always searched first by LinearPlus, this allows default information to be defined under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and then individually overridden under HKEY_CURRENT_USER on a per-user basis. Note how directory paths can contain references to other entries in the file (eg WINMAC:)
