Media center goals, objectives, and evaluation methods: Long Range Goals 1.

Long Range Goal - The SLMS will increase the time spent fulfilling the roles set forth by IP. Rationale - The SLMS's responsibilities are set forth by IP to include: teacher, instructional partner, information specialist and program administrator. (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 4-5) Rationale - These four roles support "student learning". (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 49)

Objective - Make 4 attempts at increasing awareness of the roles of the SLMS set forth by IP Evaluation - Were 4 attempts made to raise awareness of the roles of the SLMS set forth by IP? Strategy -Hold a short informational meeting about the roles of the SLMS and the LMC during preplanning, using a short but informative powerpoint Strategy -Offer 2 more informational meetings, one before school, one after; these are for the teachers who were unavailable during preplanning and those hired late. Strategy -Post Power point presentation online for : those unable to attend and those who want refreshing on the subject matter Objective - Increase Parent Volunteerism by an average of 3 hours a week. Evaluation - Was Parent Volunteerism increased by an average of 3 hours a week? Strategy -Open LMC during Open House at beginning of year, posting need for volunteers Strategy -Open LMC during PTA Meetings, posting need for volunteers Strategy -Hold parent orientations that show volunteers check in/check out procedures as well as shelving procedures

Objective - Delegate allowing 10% more time to fulfill the roles of the SLMS set forth by IP Evaluation - Was 10% more time spent fulfilling the roles of the SLMS set forth by IP? Long Range Goal - Increase Parent Involvement Rationale - Strong relationships with parents and families also lead to a broader network that supports authentic student learning through the library media program. (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 124) Rationale - Community resources ... are natural allies of LMP in fostering learning." (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 127) Rationale - Involving parents supports the school mission of encouraging community involvement.

Objective - Increase Parent Volunteerism by 3 hours a week. Evaluation - Was Parent Volunteerism increased by an average of 3 hours a week? Strategy - Open LMC during Open House at beginning of year, posting need for volunteers Strategy - Open LMC during PTA Meetings, posting need for volunteers Strategy - Hold parent orientations throughout the year that show volunteers check in/check out procedures as well as shelving procedures

Objective - Increase circulation due to parent check out by 10% Evaluation - Did circulation due to parent check out increase by 10%? Strategy - Open LMC before and after PTA meetings allowing for greater parent access Strategy - Open LMC during conferences allowing for greater parent access Strategy - Have before or after school hours allowing for greater parent access Strategy - Buy Audio books and market to parents as read alongs for the car. 3. Long Range Goal - Increase Classroom Standards-Based Instruction by increasing collaboration between the SLMS and teachers Rationale - Increasing classroom standards instruction will support the school goal of AYP attainment. Rationale - "The library media program is essential to learning and teaching and must be fully integrated into the curriculum to promote students' achievement of learning goals."(AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 58) Rationale - "The information literacy standards for student learning are integral to the content and objectives of the school's curriculum." (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 58) Rationale - "The library media specialist should work on subject and grade level teams and committees at the building, district, and state levels to develop curriculum" (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 61) Rationale - "The library media program supports the mission, goals, objectives, and continuous improvement of the school." (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 100) Rationale - "The library media program requires flexible and equitable access to information, ideas, and resources for learning". (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 83) Rationale - "The library media program models and promotes collaborative planning and curriculum development". (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 58) Rationale - "The library media program models and promotes creative, effective and collaborative teaching." (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 58) Rationale - "The library media program is essential to learning and teaching and must be fully integrated into the curriculum to promote students achievement of learning goals" (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 61) Rationale - "The library media specialist should be a "curricular leader and a full participant on the instructional team". (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 4)

Rationale - "The library media specialist should work on subject and grade level teams and committees at the building, district, and state levels to develop curriculum" (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 61)

Objective - Increase the usage of Flexible Scheduling by 10% in order to increase collaboration. Evaluation - Did flexible scheduling increase by 10%? Strategy -Hold a short informational meeting about the flexible scheduling and the LMC during preplanning, using a short but informative power point Strategy -Offer 2 more informational meetings, one before school, one after; these are for the teachers who were unavailable during preplanning and those hired late Strategy -Post Power point presentation online for: those unable to attend and those who want refreshing on the subject matter Strategy -Keep Scheduling Book in a well accessed place for teachers to easily sign up for LMC time. Strategy -Attend one grade level meeting - 2 times a year - for each grade Strategy -Personally introduce yourself to every teacher during preplanning or the first week of school Strategy -Make at least one unsolicited suggestion of grade level standards-based - reading material during each each quarter, to each grade. Strategy -Create quarterly newsletter to be posted online and in print to teachers and administrators telling what is new in the MC

Objective - Increase computer usage in the LMC by 10%. Evaluation - Did computer usage increase by 10%? Strategy -Talk to teachers during preplanning about the availability of the computers for classroom usage when the computer labs are booked Strategy -Keep a scheduling book for computer usage next to the flexible scheduling book 4. Long Range Goal - Create a more inviting media center atmosphere. Rationale - The library media program provides physical access to information and resources for learning. (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 83) Rationale - The library media program provides a climate that is conducive to learning. (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 83) Rationale - Support the School Mission by creating a nurturing learning environment.

Objective - Change Lighting Evaluation - Was the lighting changed? Strategy -Change to softer overhead lighting. Strategy -Place lamps on top of shelves near walls making for a more homey feeling.

Objective Improve the learning environment by planning for the creation of a Reading Corner for SSR Evaluation - Were prices determined and budgeted for in the upcoming year's budget? Strategy -Shop for prices on furniture and rug for inviting area Strategy -Budget for purchase of furniture and rug 5. Long Range Goal - Support the Curriculum by encouraging SSR Rationale - "The library media program encourages and engages students in reading, viewing and listening for understanding and enjoyment." (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 58) Rationale - "Models the effective and enthusiastic use of books..." (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 67) Rationale - "The library media program supports the mission, goals, objectives, and continuous improvement of the school." (AASL, AECT, 1998, p. 100) Rationale - The school's improvement plan includes the encouragement of reading non fiction books.

Objective - Increase the circulation of non fiction books by 10%- in support of goals set forth by School's Plan of Improvement Evaluation - Was the circulation of non-fiction books increased by 10%? Strategy -Make a display of non fiction books that align with the standards being taught - allowing for a greater connection between book and classroom Strategy -Make a display of teacher/SLMS favorites of non fiction books Strategy -Buy AR non-fiction books to support SIP goals of increased non-fiction reading Strategy - Buy more non-fiction/informational magazines to support non-fiction reading Objective - Increase the overall circulation by 15%. Evaluation - Was overall circulation increased by 15%? Strategy -Increase hours before and after school to allow for greater access for students and parents Strategy -Make a display of most popular books Strategy -Schedule Read Aloud time for 3rd through 5th graders reading aloud a chapter of a book that is a part of a series - hoping that the series will appeal to the student allowing for a greater choice of books - not just one book , but any one of the series Pick a book the would appeal to a boy's group Pick a book that would appeal to a girl's group or read aloud a chapter of a book that is part of a classroom set available for check out Pick a book the would appeal to a boy's group Pick a book that would appeal to a girl's group Strategy - Purchase new books series that appeal to 3-5 graders.
