Artists of River Town Salmon Show

Artists of River Town Annual Salmon Show features artist, writer, naturalist,Rex Burress. His paintings will be on display at the Artists of River Town Gallery, 1435 Myers St., Downtown Oroville, through September 30. Rexs love of nature is demonstrated in his rendering of the natural world. More than a painter, Rex writes a weekly column about and takes photographs of the glory of nature, all with good humor and great expertise. You can check out his column, RiverWatcher in the local newspapers. He is our go-to expert in identifying local (sometimes exotic) flora, fauna, rocks and minerals. Rex will be joined by Jean Burg, Don Becktel, Freda Flint, Lynn Rose Light, Lynne Stefanetti, Bob Thomaston, Phyllis Morris, Lauralyn Lambert, Barbara Sekerka, Machelle Conn, each showing work related to the Salmon and Critters theme. As students head back to school this September, the Butte County Library wants to make sure that all children have the most important school supply of all-- a library card. Owning a library card provides students the resources they need to compete academically. Most public libraries provide students free access to databases of news articles, encyclopedias, and test preparation materials, as well as homework help. In addition, public libraries are the number one access point for free internet access, an important resource for families without access at home when 96% of school districts require students to use the internet to complete their homework. The Butte County Library will celebrate National Library Card Sign-up Month by making the replacement of lost or damaged library cards available for free to patrons who would normally pay $2.50 any other time of the year. Sign up to get your new or replacement library card during September and receive a free library pencil or bookmark. Getting a library card is easy. Simply fill out a simple form available in the branches or on our website (follow the link for Services and then click Get a Library Card). Library card applications are available at all branches in either English or Spanish. The application must be submitted in person. Children 12 and under may receive a card with the signature of a parent or legal guardian. The stars of this production are Lowell Weatherfor and Mickey Foster. Its A Little Bit of Country, from 6:30 to 8 pm. Go once, and you will go again and again. It makes for fun entertainment. Bunco at The Monday Club is scheduled for September 9th. Remember, The Monday Club is a non-prot organization ran by local folks, who are notorious for laying out a terric array of yummy food, door prizes and games. Now, why is it called The Monday Club of Oroville? It seems the wives of the leading citizens of Oroville, in January 1910, decided to prove to their husbands, that they could have their washing on the line and meet for luncheon at noon. True to this day, they meet on the First Monday of each month for a lunch-business meeting. And, on the 3rd Monday for an interesting program and refreshments. The Monday Clubs clubhouse has been the hub of social and cultural activity in Oroville since it began, and represents an opportunity for members to come together for friendship, learning, entertainment and enjoyment of one anothers fellowship. New members are always welcome. For more information, call 530-5335976. I recently joined the Monday Club, and am looking forward to making new friends. These are Happy-People! They celebrated their 100th birthday last year. And by the way, they own the building, so they must have been smart business ladies. (Kudos!) If you arent happy, you need to do something about it! Happiness, like success, is a state-of-mind. No matter what you volunteer to do, you will always get back more than what you put into it! I love people, especially, happy people, and you will nd them, when you volunteer. I met Herma Barber a couple of years ago. Then I bumped into her a few more times. I last saw her at the Cornucopia on the Friday, before she passed away. She wanted me to meet her friends, Joan ONeill, from Magalia and Becky Nimz, from Oroville. They had just completed a morning of volunteer work at Orovilles Food Basket, (i.e. Gleaners). These women were anxious for me to learn more about Oroville. They wanted me to join The Monday Club, and volunteer on Fridays at Oroville Food Basket. At the time, I was too busy to follow through and sign up as a volunteer, or become a member of The Monday Club. A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to a Celebration of Herma Barbers Life. I regret we didnt get to develop a long-term friendship. But I must tell you, she was an awesome lady, with multiple talents, and has inspired me to reach out to others, as she did, in her travels on this earth. John Lowe, who acted as Master of Ceremonies, was sincere and touching in his introductions pertaining to her life and good will. My message is: Do it today ... there may not be a tomorrow! About tomorrowthis is the last week of August, that means Friday, September 2nd, is First Friday in Historical Downtown Oroville. I made a call to nd out whats going on? Will there be music in the streets, dancing outside of Housers Music Store, a band or two on Myers outside of Coyote Clothing or a block away in front of Copa De Oro? Its my understanding each merchant will be doing their own thing this First Friday, having their own sales, putting forth their own efforts, saving their bigtime festivities for the Salmon Festival, Sept. 24-25. But that means there could be discounted clothing on sidewalks, and more sales inside. Gallery Interiors is still having a sale on costume jewelry, and would be happy if you dropped in and inspected their new line of furnishings, as well as the colorful carpet runners. Dennis Perry, well known to local theatre enthusiasts, will take the male lead. Co-starring with Perry are Katy Ryan, Barbara Daggett, Allison Cardwell, and Carole Falcon. Director/actor/playwright, Bill Falcon, has taken on the job of directing this hilarious play. It opens Friday, September 9th at 7:30 pm., and runs each weekend through the 25th of September.
