n The Mecosta County Rod &
Gun Club is holding a pancake
breakfast on Sept. 4. Serving
begins at 8 a.m. and goes to 11
a.m. Menu includes scrambled
eggs, pancakes, French toast, sau-
sage, biscuits and gravy, juice and
coffee. The cost is $5 for adults
and $3 for children under age 12.
Children under age 4 are free.
The Mecosta County Rod & Gun
Club is located for miles West of
Mecosta on M-20. For more info:

n An AARP Drivers Safety Pro-
gram will be offered in September
through the Mecosta County Com-
mission on Aging.
Classes will run from 12:30
to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 and 22.
The classroom course will help
older drivers become more aware
of their changes in vision, hear-
ing and reaction time and how to
adjust their driving accordingly.
There are no tests in the two
four-hour sessions. Attendees
will go over basic rules of the
road and typical traffic violations
elderly drivers commit.
State government passed legis-
lation encouraging auto-insurance
companies to grant adults 50 and
older a discount on their auto
insurance for completing a drivers
safety course. Attendees should
consult their insurance agents to
see what discounts are available.
The cost is $12 for AARP mem-
bers and $14 for non members.

each month at the Mecosta VFW.

mend you follow these steps:
First, ask yourself some
questions. Do glasses and/or
contacts interfere with my dai-
ly life? Am I activeinto sports
or outdoor activities? Can a vi-
sion care procedure, such as
LASIK, enhance my lifestyle?
Second, learn about what
LASIK is (and what it is not).
LASIK, one of many surgi-
cal vision correction options
available, is an outpatient pro-
cedure that uses laser technol-
ogy to reshape the cornea.
LASIK is a great choice
for those with active lifestyles
where glasses and contacts in-
terfere with their daily life, a
stable vision prescription and
realistic expectations about
what the procedure can do,
said Eric D. Donnenfeld, M.D.,
F.A.C.S. and member of the
American Refractive Surgery
Council.
LASIK doesnt always com-
pletely eliminate the need for
glasses-for example, those
with age-related vision issues
such as presbyopia may even-
tually need reading glasses, as
almost everyone will at some
point.
Talk to friends and family
members who have had LASIK
and have them tell you about
their own experiences with the
procedure. There are online
resources where you can con-
tinue your research, including
the U.S. Food and Drug Ad-
ministration (www.fda.gov)
and the Eye Surgery Education
Council (www. eyesurgeryedu-
cation.com).
Third, make an appoint-
ment with an experienced oph-
thalmologistsomeone who is
certifed with the American
Board of Ophthalmology and
has performed at least 200
procedures. Get referrals from
friends, family or a trusted
physician. Experienced sur-
geons often have additional
certifcations, may be on staff
at a university medical school
and participate in clinical re-
search.
Finally, in partnership with
your surgeon, determine if
you are a good candidate for
LASIK. Many ophthalmolo-
gists offer preoperative exams
for free. Expect the exam to
take two to three hours, dur-
ing which time you will have
your vision, eyes and overall
health evaluated. Share your
full health history with your
doctor. There are medical con-
ditions, such as diabetes, that
may make LASIK and other
laser vision correction options
a poor choice. Also, certain
medications, such as cortico-
steroids, can affect the healing
process.
Education and counseling
are among the most important
things we do as surgeons. You
want a doctor whos accessible
and willing to not only tell
you all the good things about
LASIK but also if youre not a
good candidate, said Dr. Don-
nenfeld.
Bear in mind that an espe-
cially low price may not refect
your total costs, as some ser-
vices may be extra. If you arent
certain about a price, ask for a
written estimate. A checklist

City before moving to the farm in Trufant. A daughter, Karen, was born in 1954. The Hansens farmed with all the traditional farm animals. Russ also
worked in a Greenville factory, retiring in 1985. Louise passed away in 1995, following a nine year illness. The cattle are gone, but he still has his
beloved horses, three half lingers and a quarter horse. They maintain two gardens every year, vegetable and ower.
Following graduation from Lakeview High School, Karen became an LPN, working for twelve and a half years in that capacity, but decided she would
go back to school and she received her RN status. She is now retired. In 1985, they went to Denmark. Karen loved the country and wanted to learn the
language. So in 1996, she returned and spent ve months learning to speak Danish. All totalled she has been to Denmark sixteen times. She taught
Danish Conversational Classes and entertained us at a previous Trufant Jubilee Queens Pageant.
They are members of the Langston Church and Trufant Area Chamber of Commerce.
We are very proud to honor them as they represent Trufant, for this 33rd annual Jubilee celebrations, September 2011.

You Are What You Eat
Every part of our physical body comes from the earth. We are 60 to 80 percent water. The rest of the body is made up
of physical elements and compounds that come from the ground we walk on. So we should take care of the earth.
Our food comes from minerals, plants, and animals. Plants combine water and minerals from the earth and energy
from the sun to produce the plant itself. The plant parts, seeds, owers, stems, fruit, roots, tubers, and sap have been
used for food forever. Some animals eat the plant parts and then we eat the animal parts, muscle, organs, etc for a food
source for ourselves. That is why it is called a food chain.
We can manufacture most of the components of our structural body, but some parts must come in through our diet.
These needed compounds are called essential. Therefore, we see the names essential vitamins, essential fatty acids,
essential amino acids, and so forth. When you see that term, it means we cannot make that material in our body and we
must have it in our food. If we do not, deciency diseases like scurvy (lack of vitamin C) and hypothyroid goiter (lack
of iodine) will develop. In the past, deciency diseases were much more common. Today we know more about these
things and we can supplement with vitamins, minerals, and fortied foods.
One big problem we face is toxicity in our foods. Many food manufacturers use preservatives and additives to extend
the shelf life of their product. Last week I saw bread with a 19 day shelf-life. That bread must be loaded with something
powerful to mummify it like that. The FDA requires these chemicals and compounds to be within a certain safety range.
That, in itself, is very good. And, if we had only one or two additives in our dietary intake each day we would be ne.
But many foods that we eat every day all carry the allowable level of toxin. These, then, become cumulative and the net
effect is that each day we take in an unusual amount of toxic substances. Some of these we can deal with and get rid
of them through our normal channels of elimination, bowel, kidney, skin, and lungs. Some of the
toxins we cannot eliminate and then we sequester or hide them in body fat to keep them from
harming more vital tissues. This is one reason some people have a problem eliminating unwanted
pounds. Eventually these accumulations will cause damage to some of our systems.
Our body is no different than anything else we build. The quality of the ingredients determines
the quality of the nal product. If you want a beautiful garden around your home you will prepare
the soil, buy nice shrubs and owers and eliminate the weeds. We cannot expect a nice garden
spot if we plant weeds and do not take care of things. We must start with good pure raw material
and do our best to cleanse out any toxins that do get in. That way we have the best chance at
a long, healthy, happy life. So do your best to eat organically grown food and avoid the toxins.
