Introduction
The shell of the old Palace Theater belongs to the Main Street Oce. We were commissioned to nd a purpose for the building, to show a developer the possibilities available here. After a grossly over-budget rst attempt, we decided to present several schemes- showing the vast amount of opportunity in this building. We have four total: a gym, an art venue/restaurant, a farmers market/restaurant, and nally, a general multipurpose building.
History
The Palace was originally a general store, and was about half the size that it is today. Between 1898 and 1913 the general store was bought by Najeeb Solomon, an immigrant from Lebanon, and turned into a dry goods store. By 1925, Mr. Solomon had turned half of his dry goods store into a cinema. Najeebs son Teddy worked at the cinema when he was young and throughout college. This inspired his love for movies and the theater. He became a theater magnate, owning around 300 theaters and drive-ins throughout the south. It was Teddy Solomon who expanded the original theater to its current existance.

Farmers Market/Restaurant
Project Goals: The goal for the Farmer's Market / Restaurant program for the Palace Theater is to create a multiuse facility composed of the market, restaurant, and a small lease area. The Palace Theater was a social hub in its heyday and it is the project goal to return it to this former role. This facility will enliven the downtown by providing cultural amenities to the area and by activitating both Main Street and Front Street. Project Description: The Palace Theater was converted from a feed store in 1920's by the Solomon Family, and fell into disrepair in the 1970's. The theater will be redeveloped into a farmer's market on the rst oor and a restaurant extending to both the rst and second oors. The market will be split up into two areas: temporary and permanent. The temporary area will be on the south side of the building and will be open-air. The permanent side, separated from the temporary market by a mechanical/storage core, will be conditioned. One of the storefronts on Main Street will be converted into a kitchen where food is transported by dumbwaiter to the 2nd oor where patrons are seated. The restaurant will be associated with the market and will incorporate fresh foods into the menu. The original Palace Theater entry and original windows on the second and third oors of the facade will be restored, bringing the facades on both the Front St. and Main St. back to their original grandeur. Community Impact: By restoring the original marquee, the Palace Theater will return a landmark to the community. The market/restaurant will enrich the cultural and ecomomic life of McComb and activate the downtown.

Multipurpose Center
Project Goals: The goal for the multipurpose program is to create a large open area for a variety of uses. This project is the cheapest scheme, with the least amount of alterations to the existing building. Project Description: The multipurpose room will be in two levels to lower the cost of attening the oor. The balcony on the second oor is reduced in size to contain a classroom. Oces are also present on the second oor. Of the two storefronts, one will be a warming kitchen for special events and the other will be leaseable space. Community Impact: The Palace Theater in its multipurpose form can function in a variety of ways, from a movie theater to a wedding reception hall to a church. It is also large enough to hold community-wide events.
