ADVISER: Dr. J. M. Carnate RESEARCH QUESTION: Is the mode of delivery related to the development of asthma in children 6-10 years old? OBJECTIVES GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To determine if the mode of delivery is related to the development of asthma in children 6-10 years old in Dasmarias schools, 2009. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: To determine the proportion of children born through caesarean section and vaginal delivery. To determine the proportion of children 6-10 years old with asthma. To compare the proportions of children 6-10 years old with asthma born through caesarean section and vaginal delivery. RESEARCH DESIGN The research will utilize a cross-sectional study; a type of analytic observational design that would allow an analysis of the relationship between two variables occurring simultaneously in the present in order to test our hypothesis. It will be used to determine if there is a relationship between mode of delivery and the development of asthma in children 6-10 years of age. DEFINITION AND VALUES OF VARIABLES USED IN THE CALCULATIONS The variables used are taken from the articles Caesarean section and risk of asthma and allergy in adulthood by Xu et. al., published on 2001, and Assessment of the association between cesarean section and subsequent development of childhood asthma: a population-based cohort study by Juhn et al., published on 2005. Both articles are published in the Journal of 1

Allergy and Clinical Immunology. p1: The proportion of children with asthma among those born through caesarean section is not used in the calculation. Instead, an odds ratio of 3.23 is used.1 p2: The proportion of children with asthma among those born vaginally is estimated as 2.6%.2 Alpha A 90% confidence interval will be used, hence is 0.10. Beta The power of the study is 80%. Consequently, is 0.20. Hypothesis testing A two-tailed test will be used to test the hypothesis: Mode of delivery is related to the development of asthma in children 6-10 years old in Dasmarias schools. The null hypothesis is The prevalence of asthma among children born through caesarean section is equal to the prevalence of asthma among children born vaginally. Meanwhile, the alternative hypothesis is The prevalence of asthma among children born through caesarean section is not equal to the prevalence of asthma among children born vaginally. SAMPLE SIZE The variables listed above are inputted into Epi Info. The sample size is computed to be 504.
