Old PlANt, NEw PlANt

401 richmond Street West is an old plant. The tin factory was taken over by Continental Can Company in 1944 from the original owners Macdonald Manufacturing (since 1899) and was designated Plant 90. apart from the ancient vine that covers the front face of the building (thats around eighty years old) all the orchards and meadows that were once here were replaced with bricks and mortar. Bringing back the green through eco-restoration projects has been a significant part of the buildings transformation. Our award-winning roof garden is the cornerstone of our efforts but weve also been planting trees and more recently installing porous paving in our parking lot. We plan to keep adding new plants and if youd like to keep up with our efforts check out our new blog: www.oldplantnewplant.tumblr.com

Q Music and Musideums (B102 + Studio 133) Donald Quan decided to spend his summer doing one of the things he loves most: performing music with his friends. The Summer Coffeehouse Concert Series brought twenty-eight plus performers to the Q music Studios for intimate performances that dazzled audiences. Tucked away in his basement studio, the setting was a perfect match for the coffeehouse style event. There will be more performances this fall. On June 21 tenants received their first delivery of seasonal produce from Matchbox Gardens through an initiative spearheaded by Meal Exchange (Studio 365), Sustain Ontario (Studio 282), The Inner Garden (Studio 384), and in partnership with Urbanspace Property Group. Community-supported agriculture provides the opportunity for people to directly invest in local farms by purchasing shares of what is produced.

a major milestone like a 15th anniversary should not go uncelebrated particularly for an arts organization. It takes a great deal of stamina and creativity to remain relevant to audiences and attractive to funders. We met with Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festivals (Studio 309) executive Director Sonia Sakamoto-Jog to find out how they keep things fresh after fifteen years and how they continue to deliver as Canadas largest asian film festival. 401 richmond houses four of the largest film festivals in Toronto (others being: Images, Inside Out, and ImagineNative) and its inspiring to see that despite what could be construed as competition theres a truly supportive atmosphere in our festival community. Sonia took full advantage of this when she joined reel asian: I asked people here tons of questions as things came up there is such a rich pool of knowledge that people were happy to share. I dont think this would have happened as easily if we werent neighbours. The abundance of festivals in Toronto (over seventy at last count) reflects our citys diversity. Theres a little something for everyone, but theres also a risk of getting lost in the crowd. as part of reel asians initiatives to cultivate new audiences, theyre reaching outside of Toronto and screening a parallel festival in Richmond Hill. as Sonia explains, The city was very clear from the design stages of the Richmond Hill Centre for 4 the Performing Arts that they wanted to build a great presentation space for the festival, and asked us for our wish list to make sure that films could be shown there in a professional setting. In the downtown core there is so much competition for audiences, whereas somewhere like richmond hill they are so eager to have events like this that speak to their diverse community. an increase in programming has meant an increase in staff with a new full-time Director of marketing, Louanne Chan, to focus on promoting the festival not just in and around festival time but throughout the year. The festival also frequently co-presents screenings with other festivals keeping reel asian on the tip of the tongue. While the festival tries out new things, they also stay true to the things that work really well. Throughout the year, artistic Director Heather Keung travels to festivals all over the world keeping an eye on whats being shown and what might make a good fit for reel asian. Sonia says, We know were showing the best thats out there in asian cinema and that goes a long way toward keeping the festival exciting and relevant. you can catch the festival in Toronto from November 8 to 13 and in richmond hill from November 18 to 19. Visit the reel asian website to see the full program and purchase tickets that go on sale October 11. www.reelasian.com
