SAMSUNG ML-1865W

The combined drum and toner cartridge is available in just one capacity of 1,500 pages. The best prices we could find for this consumable gives a cost per page of 3.6p, including 0.7p for paper. Print costs for mono lasers vary considerably with the purchase price of the printer itself, but for sub-100 machines, this is a good result.
Verdict

If you're looking for an inexpensive mono laser printer for general home or small office work, it's hard to fault Samsung's ML-1865W. This modestly sized machine prints fast, with very little initial wait, produces excellent prints and doesn't cost much to run. With an easy to set up wireless link, it epitomises what most people are looking for in a budget laser printer.

SAMSUNG ML-2851ND

The input tray feeds into the bottom and can hold the standard 250 sheets of paper; Samsung also gives the option to purchase another 250-sheet drawer as an accessory. The Samsung does have an additional tray on the front for single sheet feeds, but again, the Samsung ML-2851ND is as basic as you can get in a monolaser, with no bells or whistles other than a built-in duplexer for printing double-sided sheets of paper. The Samsung ships with a standard yield toner cartridge capable of producing 2,000 pages, but they also sell a 5,000-page high-yield cartridge for $100. We did the math and it factors out to approximately 2 cents per page for the high yield, which is good but not the best deal you can get

SAMSUNG ML-3471ND

The drum and toner cartridge is available in two capacities: 4,000 and 10,000 pages. Using the 10,000 page consumable for better economy gives a cost per page of 2p, including 0.7p for paper. At the base is a 250-sheet paper tray, which is underspecified if the machine is really intended for a busy workgroup. You can buy an optional second tray, but this has the same capacity as the first so, with the 100 sheet multi-purpose tray, there's a maximum capacity of just 600 sheets. The control panel, set to the right of the output tray, is easy to use and well labelled. There's a 2-line by 16-character, unlit LCD display, but because it's raised up at an angle, its easy to read under most overhead lighting. There are two illuminated buttons on the control panel that you don't normally find on a laser printer. The first is a duplex button, which automatically prints all documents that come through on both sides of the paper. Where its quite normal to have a duplex facility in the printer driver theres one in Samsung's it's less usual to have a button to do this in hardware handy, though.

The second button is for Toner Save, another option that you can also enable through the driver. This is a feature unique to Samsung and shouldn't be confused with a draft print mode. When printing with Toner Save switched on, text is lighter than normal, but is still fully formed and not jagged and dotty as

with most draft modes. Samsung claims a toner saving of up to 40 per cent using Toner Save, so if most of your print is for internal consumption you could leave the feature switched on and expect up to 14,000 pages from a high-yield cartridge, rather than the 10,000 pages estimated in normal mode. At the back of the ML-3471ND are sockets for USB, 10/100 Ethernet and legacy parallel connections and it comes with both PCL and Postscript 3 in emulation. Drivers for Windows and OS X are provided and Linux is supported in Red Hat, Fedora, Mandrake and SuSE distributions, among others. The single-piece drum and toner cartridge slides in from the front in seconds, once you've folded down the front panel, so the machine needs very little maintenance.

SAMSUNG ML-3712ND

Performance was better than average. The ML-3712ND printed plain text at speeds of 22.2 pages per minute (ppm) on the PC and 22.6 ppm on the Mac. On the PC, basic snapshots exited at a rate of 5.8 ppm. On the Mac, a four-page PDF of mixed text and graphics printed at a peppy rate of 6.6 ppm. Photos showed a surprisingly smooth quality, distinguishing the ML-3712ND from most other laser models in its price range. What you have to watch out for with the ML-3712ND are its toner costs. The replacement cartridges come in three sizes. Based on our in-house street pricing research, the standard-size, 2000-page cartridge costs about $75, or a whopping 3.7 cents per page. The current average for standard-size cartridges is 2.5 cents per page (cpp). The 5000-page cartridge costs about $127, or 2.5 cpp, but the current average for higher-yield cartridges is 1.8 cpp. Finally, a 10,000-page cartridge costs about $180, or 1.8 cpp; the current average for highest-yield cartridges is 1.6 cpp.

SAMSUNG ML-4050ND

The drum and toner cartridge is available in 10,000-page and 20,000-page versions and given the comparatively small increase in price of the high-yield component, we would recommend using this, if possible. It gives a cost per page of 1.6p, including 0.7p for paper, which we've seen bettered by few printers, bar the occasional Kyocera Mita. Verdict The ML-4050ND must be a strong candidate for anybody in the market for a robust, hard-working, workgroup laser printer. It's fast, and can handle a decent amount of paper in one go, even without the copious paper tray options. Print quality is generally good though graphics are less so and running costs are better than most in its class.
