University Scholars Program Proposal- Architecture and Photography Architecture and photography are similar in the fact that

they both depend on the same material for effective expression: light. Additionally, the two mediums share the need to contain space, define surfaces, textures and materiality, and convey a sense of place. Although these two forms of expression have similar objectives, I find that often times their interactions are dilute and one-dimensional. Its common for photography to be used to capture an already finished piece of architecture, real or modeled. This finished product is usually displayed as-is, giving the viewer a static and incomplete representation of what the space is actually like. Photography is commonly used as a way of documenting a place rather than giving a sense of an individuals experience there, which leads to a flat, undeveloped understanding of space. Photography can be used in a similar way that drawings and models are used to describe an architectural idea. Im interested in exploring how photography can be a tool to describe space in a more representational way that allude to qualities of a space rather than its physical nature. In initial experiments, Ive used the double exposure effect on film cameras. This effect allows you to expose two images on one negative. Using this effect has produced interesting and unexpected images that result from an almost subconscious manipulation of space. Images Ive taken using this tool create serendipitous juxtapositions of spaces that show scalar changes, shifting axis, layering of space, and figural negation, among other things. I plan on continuing this process to further explore how two-dimensional images can describe three-dimensional space. The setting for this exploration will be in Vicenza, Italy, so my research will be about exploring and representing certain typologies of the European city. I plan on using photography to describe more fully the experiences of a traveler in the city, not as a way of pure documentation but in a way that expresses an experiential understanding of the city. To figure out how to express spatial perception in a certain context through photography, I will begin by taking double-exposure images of the city. I will use these serendipitous images to identify spatial typologies that happen. Eventually, I will use single-exposure images in a more controlled way to create a series of

layered images that describe my experience of the city. After these images are compiled, I will create analytical drawings to further explore the city of Vicenza. This series of photography and drawing can be displayed in a gallery setting in addition to the required presentation and publication.
