September 4, 2011 CELIAC DISEASE AND THE EUCHARIST

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

At least 3 million Americans suffer from Celiac Disease (1 in 133 people), an allergy to wheat gluten. This allergy creates difficulties for those who must avoid any food or product that contains wheat or gluten, a thickening agent in many foodsincluding those that contain no wheat at all. Some people are highly allergic and can have significant health problems from even a small amount; others may experience only mild symptoms or none at all. A growing number of people, especially children, are being diagnosed with this intestinal condition. As Catholics, the bread that is consecrated to be the Body of Christ poses a particular health issue for people with Celiac disease. Some choose not to receive the Consecrated Host and only drink from the Cup; others may not be able to receive even from the Cup if any gluten has transferred to it by someone who has received from the Cup previously. People who are highly allergic have to be concerned about cross-contamination. The Catholic Church has granted the use of a lowgluten host for those who cannot tolerate wheat gluten. The host has to have a minimal amount of gluten in order to be bread, which is required for consecration (we cannot use rice, for example). There are several people in our parish who are currently using this alternate host. Perhaps there are others among us who suffer from this condition? If so, we have been developing a set of procedures for the distribution of Holy Communion using the lowgluten hosts, and to receive from the Cup without concern for cross-contamination. If you have Celiac Disease or any allergy to wheat gluten, please contact Fr. Chris so he can inform you of how we can help keep you close to Christ in the Eucharist while responding to your health needs. We plan to begin our new procedures the first weekend of September (9/3-4). Fr. Chris Heath: cheath@stedward.com, or 949-542-4312

Ministry News
NEW GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP A Grief support group is being formed for parents who have experienced the loss of a child (any age). We want to help you find comfort through your grief journey within a loving spiritual environment. Come join us on September 20, 2011 from 7-8:30 pm. We will be meeting on Tuesdays for 8 weeks in the Parish Room located on the second floor of the school. The group will be facilitated by professionals specializing in grief. For questions call the parish office. WOMEN OF WISDOM Beginning again September 14, 2011 9:30am-11:30am in Knight Hall. We will explore for 8 weeks, teachings on LIFES HEALING CHOICES that bring freedom from Hurts, Hang ups, & Habits. The 8 BEATITUDES will be the foundation of our sessions. WOMEN of WISDOM is committed to encouraging women of all ages to grow spiritually, emotionally and in relationships. Shirley Filadelfia will facilitate. Register at first Meeting. All women are welcome to attend this enriching 8 week series. SICK AND HOMEBOUND MINISTRY If you would like to take Holy Communion to the Sick we are looking for someone to serve at the EMERITUS, Assisted Living Facility, in San Juan Capistrano one Sunday morning of each month. It would involve approximately two hours of your time. You would attend a short training session on how to serve the homebound parishioners in an assisted living facility and/or individual home in our area. Please call (949)496-1307 X 2207 and leave your name and telephone number for a call back. IMPORTANT PLEASE READ FOR YOUR INFORMATION Periodically, and more so of late, we have had gypsies, usually a mother with a small child, seeking money from our parishioners after the weekend Masses. While we have given them food from our Christian Service Outreach (to which they are indifferent), what they want are monetary donations. It is a racket and they prey on parishioners good will. They have been circulating among parishes and other establishments seeking money. We ask that you do not respond to their solicitation for money so as not to encourage their return. It is important to say that we are not turning our backs to the poor; rather we do not wish to condone or encourage their manipulative and sometimes aggressive behavior which is a racket for collecting money. ART AND ENVIRONMENT NEEDS YOUR HELP Beautifying the church environment enhances the liturgy, encourages the faithful to enter into their spiritual journey and prepares the atmosphere for our priests to celebrate the Mass. This task takes time and many people, young, seniors and in between. If you can offer a helping hand to decorate your church for all the liturgical seasons please contact Deana Progar at dprogar@cox.net or 525-7092 TWO HEARTS PRAYER GROUP FRIDAY SETPEMBER 2ND 9:15 A.M. TO 10:15 A.M. We invite you to join us as we sing and pray before the Blessed Sacrament, the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet asking Jesus and Mary to fill us with their LOVE. Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, Calif., wrote to members of Congress last month. In a time of economic crisis, the poor and vulnerable people are in greater need of assistance, not less. Blaire, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, explained the moral framework that should guide Congress: Meeting essential human needs is a compelling ethical and fiscal priority. A moral measure of the budget is how it treats the least of these in all stages of life. - Editorial, National Catholic Reporter 7/23/11 Next meeting: 9/13, 6:45 - Church Meeting Room. SOCIETY of ST.VINCENT de PAUL In 2010 the Vincentian Studies Institute of DePaul University undertook the project of creating the first full-length documentary about St. Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac (co-founder with Vincent of the Daughters of Charity) to celebrate the 350th anniversaries of their deaths (Vincent on Sept. 27, 1660, and Louise on March 15, 1660).The result is "Vincent de Paul: Charity's Saint." DePaul University (Chicago, IL) derives its name and fundamental mission from St. Vincent de Paul. HELP US HELP OTHERS Christ Caring for People through People. What Do Stephen Ministers Do?
