You Asked...
Kaitlyn, what is the craziest story you have from studying abroad?
- Hiedi Adkins, San Marcos
Abby, what are your tips for staying fashionable when the hectic school year starts up?
- Piper Burke, San Antonio
With the another semester rolling around the corner, also comes the great sport of football. My favorite thing about starting the fall is the fact that I get to see my Longhorns play on the eld along with Burnt Orange fans everywhere. Saturdays are lled with BBQ, country music, beer and cowboy boots. Saturdays cant get any better than that!
Well, there would have to be a tie between tanning butt naked on the Barcelona beach or nearly getting arrested in Paris on the 4th of July. Both stories involve lots of alcohol, raging, and ignoring consequences after my actions, but both crazy incidents proved successful for me in the end. Cest la vie!
Dresses. Everyone always thinks Im dressed up because I am wearing dresses, but they are really the easiest things to throw on in the morning. Also, my favorite hairstyle through the summer was the messy chignon. No one ever noticed when my hangover prevented me from caring about my hair.

From their beginning as four structured orchestra students jamming out after rehearsals to todays 19-member ensemble that is catching national medias attention, Mother Falcon has come a long way - and, as far as theyre concerned, they wont stop until theyve reached the top.
remember that, while were in formal black playing to a packed church, our name is still basically a joke on potty words.
How would you summarize your sound, that has been called orchestral pop? Nick: My favorite label that has
its something high-brow, but you have to remember this band came together over a high school lunch table...
been thrown at us thus far is contemporary classical. Id like to think we are free to do whatever we want musically and that it gains cohesiveness through our instrumentation. e uses of strings and horns have a certain classical sense to them and the music is re ective of both old and new trends in music. Some songs like Alligator Teeth have the grind of hip-hop while others like Kathryn waltz into the room.
priority on catchy hooks, hoping to catch the ears of a wide, often pop-listening, audience. But arguments against the word are fair and, long story short, we dont really know what to call ourselves. If we are indeed defying genres, thats even more exciting to me anyway.
How has the transition from college collective to a touring band been? Yun: Were not quite touring yet;
playing with the band for maybe six months before I found this out. Its always a little fun to

the furthest weve gone is Dallas. Were de nitely still in the middle of that transition. e hardest part is that a majority of venues simply arent equipped to handle 24+ inputs or even have that many microphones. Other than the equipment purchasing, weve also been practicing how to get in and out of a clown car.
Matt:
I may be one of the few defenders of the pop modi er. My feeling is that, at the end of the day, we are still writing songs with a
eres a lot to learn before we really become a touring band and theres also a lot of schedulejuggling to be done. Sometimes
its like waiting for the planets to align. We are very conscious of the amount of nancial and organizational resources that it would take to put us on a long tour though, so we are taking great care to ensure that we have audiences to visit before we really hit the road. at said, were making tiny forays into other cities this summer--Houston, Dallas, Denton, Birmingham, Mobil--in large part to make sure we work out the kinks before the stakes are raised. So far, so good!
I imagine that with such a large number of rotating band members that everyones style is different. How does that affect your writing process? Nick: We usually start the songs
there, but if we only played shows when everyone could make it wed probably have 2 performances a year. Flexibility is the key.
What has been your favorite experience as a band so far? e most fun times Matt:
Green Light from Still Life was altered a bit the last time we played it in mid-June 2011.
Matt:
have always been when all the members commit to clearing their schedules for something big like recording or SXSW. Its extremely rare that we can get together and not have anyone rushing o to do something else, so whenever that does happen its like Mother Falcon Summer Camp.
in a smaller writing group made up of a combination of the core writing group, people that are always in town and dont ever rotate out, and whoever else wants to join on that particular day. We then fatten the skeleton of a song through many group rehearsals.
open the annual Fusebox Festival (a contemporary art, music and performance festival that occurs in venues all over Austin). We wrote a piece just for that event that mixed and rearranged some of our songs together to be played by ourselves and 100 volunteer string players.
e scheduling is, of course, a huge feat, but part of why I love this band so much is that when you get everyone in the same room and focused on a task, the work happens so quickly and beautifully that it immediately makes up for all the prior organizational hassle. ere was a huge amount of pre-production and planning for the recording of Alhambra, but once we got everyone into the church where we recorded, we were able to knock out 12 songs in about as many hours.
What is the next step from here? Nick: Creatively, its all about
new songs with new directions with new interpretations. Well push ourselves out of our comfort zones and start to really question and rede ne our creative process.
Yun:
e biggest e ect the rotations have on our music is the arrangement. Particularly in the violin section, I think theres a noticeable di erence between songs depending on who was around when the parts were rst being laid out. Eventually though, people come back and further arrangement changes are made to the song, so its a constantly evolving process and everyone gets their say.
Your band is spread all over the nation. How does that affect your recording/touring/ creative process. Yun: Recording Still Life and
the production! Twenty-one schedules just create an awful lot of work. However, over the years weve gotten used to writing, practicing and performing in a multitude of con gurations, so even when some folks cant make it we can still play good shows and put our best foot forward. Certainly were never as strong as when every person is
Alhambra were very tricky scheduling issues. Still Life began to be tracked in the bedroom of one of my roommates, but we did the bulk of it over a weekend at the Indie Fort Studio when everyone could get together. For Alhambra, we did like 90 percent of it live over two and a half days at Central Presbyterian in mid-August. Vocals and a few other instruments were overdubbed afterwards. Touring isnt a ected much, as we have everything covered at just 2/3 strength and can even play the songs coherently using less members with some creative arrangements. Creatively, Ive mentioned we have a core group that lays out the meat and bones of the songs, but nothing is set in stone so people eventually come back and can make improvements - even Faint
were looking to expand our fanbase at a national level so we can start touring properly; while most bands can just pack up and go on a tour, our size makes it extra risky and costly to do so without enough support. e best thing you can do to help us out is to just let your out-of-town/ state friends listen to us and see if they like it.

THIS SOULFUL SINGER IS ON HER WAY UP IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY, AND SHE DOESNT PLAN ON LOOKING BACK.

f you arent familiar with the name Mlat Kassa, then get used to hearing it soon. e recent University of Texas advertising graduate has already put out a mixtape and a Christmas series in 2010. Standing at only 5 feet, 3 inches, it is easy to underestimate her- that is until she opens her mouth and her soulful voice destroys that assumption.
Campaign Music. She is the only singer and female on the label, which consists of rappers Killa Dro and Swi a, producer Pha the Phenom, and Shadyville DJ JC Flores. Making the album was a bit of emotional breakthrough for Mlat. After a long break from music, she struggled to refocus on her art, but the end results were very rewarding. I wrote all of my tracks and co-wrote a few with Pha, Mlat said. roughout making this album, I learned how to work, write, edit and basically do everything better from the guys who have all done these things for years. After the release of her debut Exposed in November 2010 and a subsequent Christmas series, Mlat received positive responses and an ever-growing fan base. However, her budding success did not come without a price. e former party girl had to learn how to balance nishing up school, going to work, and her burgeoning music career. ere is so much time that goes into my music,
While listening to her album Exposed, its hard to tie it to one genre. e Crunk and B style of her singles Purple, Green, and Yellow and Gimme a Shot are perfect pre-club anthems, while Crying Mood and When it Happens hold a serene, mellow mood with a pop avor. Mlat has already begun making a name for herself with San Antonio-based label Campaign Music behind every note. Taking back her inspirations Music has always been a part of Mlat. Its something that she lives and breathes on a daily basis. Ive wanted to do music for so long. I remember being little and dancing to Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald, the EthiopianAmerican beauty recalled as she sprawled across her couch for a rare moment of peace. I was watching the Grammys and wanted to sing with Frank Sinatra. Corny, I know! Supported and encouraged by her parents, Mlat started playing piano at age of ve. Although she was initially shy, she began to grab leads in choir and theatre her senior year of high school. Driven by practicality, she chose an advertising major over music when she got to college. She eventually ended up putting music on a two- year hiatus. It wasnt until she met Pha, a UT grad and now her producer, that she decided she wanted to commit herself to music full time. I started to show Pha some of the songs that I had written, said Mlat. I was still too timid to sing in front of people, but he convinced me. Once I sang Ave Maria, he paused and said, Lets get to work! In the studio and out for the public Once they had a solid selection of album-ready songs, Mlat signed on to
she explained. Im out of town every weekend for it. Its overwhelming at times. Ive basically given up some of my social life! Im blessed that I have supportive friends and family, though. With graduation near and new projects to complete, Mlat has taken a huge step into the world of music and will only look ahead to the future, which includes adding her presence and voice to future albums and live performances. Mlat o ers advice to anyone questioning following their dreams. I put myself out there and although it wasnt all roses and gumdrops, Im so proud of what has happened to me. She adds with a wink, And oh yeah, I plan on being at the Grammys sooner rather than later. We hear you Mlat! See you at the Grammys.

SEXTING
So here is the no brainer: sexting can be very risky. Ive always heard (and witnessed) that what you text, email, chat, and skype your goods all up for others to know and well, see. If youre dating someone for over a year, then the trust may be strong enough, but be careful if youre sending it to some douche you just met at the bar.
Technology has taken over our lives- including our love lives. Sorry ladies, it isnt about love letters anymore, its about being sexy via email or text messages. Here are some rules to keep in mind while doing the deed in sexting. Sexual Health Peer educator Milla Impola gives you helpful hints.

Revenge will be on the Longhorns minds as they travel to sunny Southern California for this home-and-home rematch. Always a barnburner, were thinking this time that both offenses will have their way with the opposing defenses. Oklahoma will be a top-5 ranked program to start the season, and will likely come into this game undefeated. For the Longhorns to win, Manny Diazs defense will have to clamp down late and somehow contain this potent offense. It can happen, Longhorn fans. You just have to believe.

Cowboy Meltdown?
tc
hup
You know how it goes, Longhorn fans. The Burnt Orange beats down a solid opponent, and then comes home and loses to a lesser foe. In this case, the Cowboys could actually be the Big-12s best. A loss here would not only be a surprise, but it is probably a forgone conclusion. Stranger things have happened, though.
1 2 3
Offensive Line: It was a key to victory in 2010, and we all saw what happened. It needs to improve and get the new offensive system for this team to win. Period. Dominant D: Manny Diaz is a ery leader that should will his unit to make big plays. In short, it MUST make big plays to get the offense back on the eld. Quarterback: It seems simplistic to think that Garrett Gilbert, or whoever is under center, has to play well. Turnovers have to be kept to a minimum, and the offense should move and ow.

The Tigers will enter the season as a top-25 program, but after losing Blaine Gabbert and a host of other playmakers, this team may be struggling at this point in the season. At this point in the season, the defense should be making big plays and the offense should have its gears moving.

KEY PLAYER
The running-back-by-committee approach may be totally scrapped if Brown is as good as advertised. Look, the Horns do have some competent runners in the stable, but Brown is a game-changer. He is going to be a star for this Longhorn team for years to come. Coaches Applewhite and Harsin will get him the ball in key situations and hell come through.
We think that a 9-3 record would be a huge turnaround after a dismal 5-7 record in 2010. The defense could become dominant once again, and the offense should produce some big-time reworks. Now, whos up for some Bowl-ing?
For Brown to maximize his effort, though, the Horns offensive line MUST be able to open up running lanes. The unit has been muchmaligned for the past few years, and has to become absolutely dominant in order for Gilbert to remain upright and the aforementioned Brown to break big runs.

Feel like looking cute and dressing up without taking it too far? Throw on a breezy romper and pair it with some strappy sandals to nish the look. Running late to class and dont know what to wear? You can never go wrong with a v-neck. Sperrys are also a comfortable and trendy shoe when youre on the go.
DONT
Save the booty dress and the 6 inch stilettos for the clubs. Looking this fancy will denitely get you attention, but in all the wrong ways. Do yourself a favor and throw away all of your graphic tees right now. If you are waking up three hours before class to do your makeup and hair, youre trying too hard.

HOW TO...
DRESS ACCORDINGLY
Football season can get a bit tricky. One game its hot, another its colder than the North Pole, and there are even times its so humid outside, your hair is taking you back to the 70s. Check the weather before hand, to make sure youll be able to watch, eat, and drink comfortably.
You have two hours before the game starts. That means, two hours to drink all the Shiner Bock you wish (or whatever your favorite beer is). Mastering the art of drinking at tailgates is a necessity. Fastest beer bong? Youve got it champ. Who can shotgun a beer in under 5 seconds...cold? You can. Now all you need is the Rocky theme song to dance along with.
The main reason to tailgate is to booze it up before heading to the stadium to see your team kick ass. What are the essentials to drink the right way? Take your koozie because beer after beer can get a bit cold, your sunglasses because it is 11am on a Saturday and the sun is starting to reach its peak, and oh yeah, the reason youre tailgating, a football game! Dont forget your ticket to get in.

Were Talking About The Two Steppin, Boot Wearin Music That Feeds Your Soul
Football season is right around the corner. While your hands are filled with beer and tailgate foods, there is only one more ingredient that makes the perfect tailgate complete. Thats country music. Its blasting in the background right before the game starts. If youre not familiar with what red dirt country is, dont fret. Its a reference to the color of soil where the country musicians began. Check out our exclusive interviews to get the inside scoop on these red dirt singers!
Guide To
artists. However, separating their dreams from reality was always a close call, Youd never though youd be this big. You have dreams of becoming an artist but you also have to be realistic. We still went to college, we graduated with degrees, and made enough money to pay the bills while still creating the band, says Mike Eli in an interview. What got this band to be so successful is that they always tried to work harder than anyone else who was creating music. You have to take every opportunity that crosses your path, because each one can lead to the next opportunity. Always entertain anyone who wants to talk to you, you never know what the next step it.

WIN!
If It Wasnt For e Fan Base, ere Wouldnt Be A Band. Brandon Rhyders popularity has grown tremendously in the past few months, and if you havent heard from him yet, its about time you get on board. His music ranges from slow love melodies to fast paced sounds that please the crowd. Among the many other red dirt singers, Rhyders sound is di erent. And once you hear it, its hard to let go of. e red dirt country music we sing isnt your Nashville country. is country music is real, original, and authentic.
e cool thing about what we get to do in the country world, it wouldnt be considered nashville country-- just red dirt, there is a market that your fans allow us to do, if it wasnt for the fan base, then there wouldnt be a band. says Brandon in an interview. Keeping the fans at the top of the bands priority list while making the music, is Brandons goal. With him as lead vocals, Matt Powell playing on the guitar and Dusty Saxon on the drums, they all play red dirt music that gives fans a new perspective.

Kevin Fowler
Actually, Its Kevin F #king Fowler, * To Be Correct. If youre looking for a crazy, beer drinking, hell-raising country music sound, this is your man. Kevin Fowler said it best, is aint your Daddys country music. is is country music for the shitty attitude. Someone who is all about having a good time and not taking anything too seriously, is why his fans love him the most. He has the crazy attitude himself and says things before thinking. When I walked onto the tour bus for an interview, the rst thing I was told, Kevin is kind of an asshole. Dont be o ended if he says something mean. My response? Well, Im kind of a bitch. is will be interesting. And interesting is what it was.
Fowler spends most of the year on tour, its in your blood or its not, simply because thats all he wants to make great music for his fans to have a kick-ass party to. He loves to write songs, make records and to create music, however, that is just all just a means to the end, which is to get on stage and play for people. If you think your attitude can hold up with lyrics such as I want a fat bottom girl, and I aint drinkin anymore, but I aint drinkin any less his music is something you should really check out. His latest album is Chippin Away released this past July. www. kevinfowler.com
Josh Abbott Vocals, Acoustic Guitar Preston Wait Fiddle, Electric Guitar Edward Villanueva Drums, Comic Relief James Hertless Bass Caleb Keeter Electric Guitar

Breaking away from the stereotype of typical dip-spittin singers, this band creates music to express their personality- fun. e music they play has a rock and roll feel to it to entertain the crowd to the fullest. e crowd enjoys a beer, dancing and having fun. If you havent listen to it yet, you dont get it, says Abbott. To hear a few of their sounds, be sure to check out their newest album, Shes like Texas to listen for yourself.

Out of sight, out of mind. When you shop, stay away from empty calorie foods. Only shop on the outside walls in your grocery store, where the fresh whole foods are kept. Avoid the middle aisles, where the processed foods are kept.

We kept very simple basics, like plain black couches and a plain black co ee table. We incorporated everyones style by creating our gallery wall. Everyone has at least one contribution. We were able to include all of our favorite eclectic pieces, like the mis-matched knobs and John Lennon poster.
If you had to pick one item in your apartment that described all of the roommates, what would it be?
Our tissue paper ower canvas is de nitely the piece that describes us. It was a handmade piece that Katherine and Rachel both worked on. Each ower was made by hand and sewn onto the canvas. e original idea was to use all of the colors of tissue paper transitioning from warm to cool colors. We edited it to just include the warm colors, because they are much more inviting.
How do you decide what makes the cut in the apartment, or do you just add things and hope no one moves it?
OUR PLACE
Each flower was made by hand and sewn onto the canvas.
Decorating has been a collaborative e ort. It de nitely helps that our styles are pretty similar. When deciding on the pieces to include in the gallery wall we considered how well each piece went together and its placement on the wall. If something didnt t or didnt look right we didnt include it.
What advice would you give to people who are trying to combine very different styles?
De nitely compromise. It helps to have roommates with similar styles, but we still did not agree on everything. It helps to be open minded. We all had very vague ideas of how we wanted to set up the gallery wall, and I think we ended with a better result than we had ever imagined. Decorating for ve takes collaboration.

Every month we give food tips on healthy eats and how to keep those pounds off, but lets be honest sometimes you just need a damn break. Indulge in the deadly sin of gluttony and have a 500-calorie cocktail while youre at it too. You only live once, so try out these recipes to (literally) die for.
Directions: Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt into large bowl. In another bowl, whisk together sugar, buttermilk, butter and eggs until thoroughly combined. Stir buttermilk mixture into flour mixture until smooth dough forms. On a lightly floured work surface, pat dough flat and lightly flour. Roll out dough to 1/3-inch thickness. Cut into rounds with 2 inch cookie cutter. Place a caramel in the center of each round, pinch dough closed around it. Gently roll into a smooth ball.
Line baking sheet with paper towels. Fill wide, shallow bowl with one inch of sugar. In a large, heavy pot, heat four inches of oil until it hits 350 on a candy thermometer. In batches of four, fry doughnuts for five minutes. Turn once with a slotted spoon and adjust heat as needed. Transfer doughnuts to prepared sheet. Let rest for four minutes. Roll in sugar to coat. Serve immediately.
Fried Pickles
Ingredients: 24 oz. jar of baby dill whole pickles, quartered 1 cup flour tsp salt 2 tsp black pepper 1 egg cup buttermilk, well shaken 2 cups panko breadcrumbs tsp cayenne pepper tsp dried dill weed
Directions: Place flour, salt and pepper in large ziploc bag, seal and shake to combine. Throw pickle spears in, re-seal and shake to coat well. Set aside. Whisk buttermilk and egg together in a bowl, set aside. Combine breadcrumbs, cayenne pepper and dill in a wide, shallow dish. Set aside. Dip floured pickle spears in egg mixture then in breadcrumbs, coating well.
Set coated pickles on a large tray. Heat about a half-inch of vegetable oil up to 250 degrees in a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Fry pickles in four batches until golden brown on both sides. Make sure oil heats back up to proper temperature between batches. Drain on paper towels. Serve with ranch dressing.

Although an NFL football game can last up to three hours the ball is really only in play for about 11 minutes. During a football game, Georgia Tech once beat Cumberland University 222-0. The huddle in a football game was created by deaf football players. This technique was to prevent the opposing team to read their plays through sign language. When youre watching a football game on television, more than 56% of plays shown are ones you have already seen, replayed.
