Integration of East Germany into the Federal Republic has resulted in high unemployment and a severe reduction of state subsidies for childcare and other social benefits. Although confronted with a dramatic change in their expectations, East German women have joined neither Ihe WO!U~H'~ movement nor the major political parties in large numbers. Yet it is through pressure within the political parties and through social-political coalitions that progressive policies are most likely developed.
