STAGES IN ASSIGNMENT WRITING

INTRODUCTION

There are different approaches to write an Assignment. But almost every single approach can be split into two specific parts which consist of: Part 1 - Preparation, Planning and Task Analysis and Part 2 - Drafting and Writing the assignment.

Each part can be broken down into different stages. Below is a scheme that adheres for writing a well-organised assignment.

PART 1 PREPARATION, PLANNING AND TASK ANALYSIS

Tasks 1. Plan how you will carry out the task 2. Analyse the assignment task 3. Gather information for the task

1.

Plan how you will carry out the task When is the assignment due? Write the date in your diary. When will you complete the first draft and final draft? Write these dates in your diary.

2.

Analyse the assignment task Break the question or task into its parts. Ask yourself: how many parts or actions are involved? Underline the question words (e.g. discuss/describe/explain/compare etc) and make sure you understand their specific meanings. Analyse your audience. Think of your potential readers as intelligent non-experts on the topic. What information do you think they need to know? Identify the materials you need to carry out the task - theory, factual information, statistics, case studies, interviews, etc. Organise your thoughts by brainstorming ideas, and grouping them. Which ideas are more relevant to the topic and which can be cut out? What links are there between ideas? Make a rough plan of the main headings

3.

Gather information for the task Start researching the literature early to get an idea of the dimensions of the topic. Review the material covered in lectures, workshops and problems relevant to the task. Collect any other information or data required. Read the material you have collected and make careful notes. Keep records of literature reviewed. Make changes to your plan as you read the literature.

PART 2 DRAFTING & WRITING THE ASSIGNMENT

Tasks 1. Make an outline draft 2. Write your first draft 3. Prepare the final draft

1.

Make an outline draft List the ideas you will use under the relevant heading. Make a list of all references. Go over the outline and make sure you have addressed all points of the question.

2.

Write your first draft Expand each idea into a paragraph. Arrange the paragraphs into a logical sequence. Write simply and clearly, using short grammatical sentences. Use your own words as much as possible. Link the paragraphs. Redraft if necessary.

3.

Prepare the final draft Re-read, and rewrite if necessary. Write the introduction and conclusion last. Leave the draft at least 48 hours before final proof-reading.
