Reading enriches the inner world of a person, improves grammar and spelling. Through reading people learn to understand different ways of thinking and feelings of other people, become more flexible and open-minded. Avid readers not only read and write better than those who read less, but also process information faster. The research presented by the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology proves that poor readers have poorer short-memory functions [1]. As a result, avid readers have a broader outlook, are quicker to analyze facts and find connections between seemingly unrelated ideas. A reader has better skills for comprehending, analyzing, understanding, responding, and, finally, learning from what he or she reads. As a result, it is easier for good readers to get used to new and unfamiliar circumstances or ideas. They are easier to communicate with, and have higher chances to succeed in both professional and personal life. The Importance of Effective Writing Skills Application essays, CVs, cover letters, and even e-mails often have to represent an individual. In such cases the persons writing is to form the readers opinion about the individuals personality and abilities. Excellent writing is sure to earn respect. Poor writing will, on the contrary, be difficult to

understand, and will leave a bad impression about the individual. Writing structures and crystallizes ones thoughts, improving learning in such a way [2]. Writing improves the effectiveness of the persons word usage in both written and oral speech [3]. A survey conducted among 64 American companies revealed that half of them pay attention to writing when considering a person for employment or promotion [4]. According to Roger Howe, a former chairman and CEO of U.S. Precision Lens, the majority of the successful people are clear and persuasive in their writing [5]. Developed reading skills lead to the development and improvement of writing skills. Regular readers' comprehension skills (ability to compare and contrast, evaluate and summarize, identify specific features and genres, make analogies) serve as a basis for good writing. Chapter I The Problem and its Background

a. Introduction Reading enriches the inner world of a person, improves grammar and spelling. Through reading people learn to understand different ways of thinking and feelings of other people, become more flexible and open-minded. Avid readers not only read and write better than those who read less, but also process information faster. The research presented by the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology proves that poor readers have poorer short-memory functions. As a result, avid readers have a broader outlook, are quicker to analyze facts and find connections between seemingly unrelated ideas. Poor writing will, on the contrary, be difficult to understand, and will leave a bad impression about the individual. Writing structures and crystallizes ones thoughts, improving learning in such a way. Writing improves the effectiveness of the persons word usage in both written and oral speech. A survey conducted among 64 American companies revealed that half of them pay attention to writing when considering a person for employment or promotion. According to Roger Howe, a former chairman and CEO of U.S. Precision Lens, the majority of the successful people are clear and persuasive in their writing. Developed reading skills lead to the development and improvement of writing skills. Regular readers' comprehension skills (ability to compare and contrast, evaluate and summarize, identify specific features and genres, make analogies) serve as a basis for good writing. Reading and

writing, are interrelated. Both are language based and experience based, both require active involvement for language learners, and both must be viewed as acts of making meaning for communication. Reading and the consideration of written texts should form an important part of the teaching of writing. Writing cannot be taken as a different entity from other aspects of language use. Writing requires attention to reading and to talking, for these are the two means by which writing skill can be learned or acquired. Trotsky (1983) and Shanahan (1988), did a survey of first language correlation studies, and here are the results they found as mentioned in the book, Reading and Learning to Read, by Vacca and Gove: * Reading and writing processes are correlated, good readers are good writers and vice versa. * Students who write well tend to read more books than those who are less capable as writers. * Wide reading may be as effective in improving writing as actual practice in writing. Writing usually comes from doing that is, through practice. But reading other people's writing also plays an important role in improving your own writing. For example, reading helps you develop your vocabulary and improve your spelling, which in turn helps your reading, which in turn continues to improve vocabulary and spelling. The cycle goes on. Reading also gives you writing styles to emulate. You can improve your writing by not only doing, but also seeing how others do it.

b. Statement of the problem 1. Does reading affect the writing skills of the English 2 students? 2. Does reading makes an English 2 students proficient in their writing skills? 3. Does the writing skill of the English 2 students which reads more is greater than those who dont read?

c. Definition of terms

d. Significance of the study Reading and writing can be a powerful way to learn, if conducted in an environment that supports it. Both reading and writing are skills that can be developed. Reading well requires critical literacy, met cognition, and reading strategy while writing can be a powerful way to develop knowledge in the writer while constructing texts for others. Children who read tend to do better at school and professionally. Improving your reading and writing a skill also goes hand in hand with developing your communication skills. The more you read and write, the more you broaden your vocabulary and are able to articulate concepts accurately and more effectively to others. Increasing your ability to communicate also helps make you a better worker or student.
