"We Feel the Attraction for Heaven Rekindle in Us"

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 3, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the address Benedict XVI gave Saturday, All Saints' Day, before praying the midday Angelus with crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square. November 09, 2008

Dear brothers and sisters: Today we celebrate with great joy the feast of All Saints. When one visits a botanical garden, he is impressed by the variety of plants and flowers, and spontaneously thinks of the fancy of a Creator who has made on earth a marvelous garden. An analogous sentiment washes over us when we consider the spectacle of sanctity: The world seems to be a "garden" where the Spirit of God has called forth with admirable imagination a multitude of men and women saints, of every age and social condition, of every language, people and culture. Each one is distinct from the others, with the uniqueness proper of the human person and of a particular spiritual charism. All of them have, though, the "seal" of Jesus (cf. Revelation 7:3), that is, the imprint of his love, witnessed by way of the cross. All are in a state of joy, in endless celebration, but, like Jesus, they have reached this goal by passing through fatigue and testing (cf. Revelation 7:14), each one confronting his own part in sacrifice so as to participate in the glory of the Resurrection. The solemnity of All Saints was gradually affirmed over the course of the first Christian millennium as a collective celebration of the martyrs. Already in 609, in Rome, Pope Boniface IV had consecrated the Pantheon, dedicating it to the Virgin Mary and all the martyrs. This martyrdom, on the other hand, can be understood in a broad sense, that is, as love for Christ without reserves, love that is expressed in the total gift of oneself to God and to neighbor. This spiritual goal, to which all the baptized are called, is reached by following the path of the Gospel beatitudes, which the liturgy proposes for us in the feast of today (cf. Matthew 5:1-12a). It is the same path traveled by Jesus, and which the saints have made an effort to travel, though aware of their human limitations. During their earthly lives, in fact, they have been poor of spirit, sorrowful for sin, humble, hungry and thirsty for justice, merciful, pure of heart, peacemakers, persecuted for justice. And God has made them participants in his own happiness: They have foretasted it in this world, and in the world beyond, they enjoy it in plenitude. Now they are consoled, inheritors of the earth, satisfied, forgiven, they see God of whom they are children. In a word, "theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven" (cf. Matthew 5:310). On this day we feel the attraction for heaven rekindle in us. [It] moves us to quicken our step on this earthly pilgrimage. We feel burst into flame in our hearts the desire to unite ourselves forever with the family of the saints, of which already now we have the grace to form a part. As a popular spiritual hymn says: "When the saints come marching in, oh how I want to be in their number." May this beautiful aspiration burn in all Christians and help them to overcome every difficulty, every fear, every tribulation. Let us place, dear friends, our hand in the maternal hand of Mary, Queen of the saints, and allow ourselves to be guided by her toward the heavenly homeland, in the company of the blessed spirits "of every nation, people and tongue" (Revelation 7:9). And let us unite ourselves already in prayer, remembering our dearly departed, who tomorrow we commemorate. CATHOLIC FAITH:

Id like to begin today with a little of the history of the Church of St. John Lateran. St. John Lateran is the Pope's cathedral or principal church of the Bishop of Rome. It was once a royal palace and basilica which belonged to the ancient Roman Emperor Constantine and his family. After Constantines conversion in A.D. 313, the Emperor gave the palace and adjacent church to Pope Miltiades. At one time to say the Lateran was equivalent to saying the Vatican today. This continued up until the fourteenth century. When the papacy moved from Rome to Avignon for seventy years, the Lateran basilica fell into ruins from lack of maintenance as well as from several earthquakes which ravaged it. When the Popes finally returned, for practical reasons, the Popes began to stay more at private residences on the Vatican Hill. Little by little the Lateran, though rebuilt in reduced dimensions, was relegated more to the cardinal vicar whom the Pope named to govern his diocese in his name so he could devote more time to the universal Church. Since then, and in our day, the Lateran Palace houses the papal vicar for Rome and his household and offices, thus becoming the chancery of Rome. As the Cathedral of the Pope, the Supreme Pontiff and Pastor of the Universal Church, the Lateran Church or Basilica is the head and mother of all churches. It is dedicated under the title of the Most Holy Savior as well as that of St. John the Baptist. It is more known by this second title of St. John, its full proper name being the Patriarchal Basilica of the Most Holy Savior and Saint John the Baptist at the Lateran. If you go to Rome today and visit this Basilica, you will most likely be impressed by the large circular building behind the Church. This is the Baptistry. The diameter of the baptistry is about half the size of our Church here. By the way, if you were to go to Pisa, when you are done looking at the leaning tower, behind the Cathedral youll see a similar baptistry. Same in Florence and other major Italian cities. When people, infants to adults, were baptized, the entire parish gathered for the celebration. The entrance of a new Christian into the faith was a central focus of the Church. Baptism was never then nor now considered a private ceremony. It was and remains a community celebration. That is why our adults who are brought into the faith are baptized during the Easter vigil or, if baptized at other times of the year, are baptized during major parish celebrations, such as Pentecost. Todays celebrations reminds us of our union with the Bishop of Rome, the Holy Father. In the nineteenth century, St. John Bosco (Don Bosco) came upon a group of his Salesians and their charges celebrating the election of the papacy of Leo XIII. They were shouting the equivalent of Hooray for Leo XIII. Don Bosco corrected them by saying, No, not hooray for Leo XIII. Instead, Hooray for the Pope whoever that Pope may be. We have to recognize that the papacy is a gift from the Lord who appointed Peter and his successors to continue his presence over the other apostles and bishops as his Rock, his Vicar on earth. The Pope is often referred to as the Supreme Pontiff or bridge builder between God and man. Every Pope has particular gifts as well as particular human foibles. What really matters is not the individual but the charism given to the indiPage 4

vidual when he is consecrated Bishop of Rome. It is important that we not relegate the merits of the papacy merely to a consideration of whoever might be pope at a particular time. We have been blessed with a wonderful, dynamic and powerful leader in Pope John Paul II. His prayer and hard work contributed to the downfall of communism. He has made the papacy global, bringing Gods love and concern to all people everywhere. Perhaps a day will come when he also will be considered to be a saint. But even with all this, the papacy is infinitely greater than Karol Wotyla. We pray for him particularly in these days when he appears so physically frail. But when his life does come to an end, the papacy will remain as the Holy Spirit appoints the next Vicar of Christ. The union of all the Dioceses of the world with the Diocese of Rome, of all the Bishops of the world under the authority of the Bishop of Rome, is our assurance that we remain the Church that Jesus Christ founded on the Rock of Peter. The fundamentals of our theology, our liturgy, our morality, are the same throughout the world due to the union of the Catholic Church with the Bishop of Rome. You may join in the celebration of Mass in a country where you do not know a word of the language, but you still can join the people in the praying the Mass because the fundamental parts of the Mass are the same everywhere as determined by Rome. Catholics in India believe in the Divinity and Humanity of Jesus in the same way as Catholics in the United States because that which is fundamental to our belief has been codified by Rome. Catholics in South America are as repulsed by the immorality of abortion as Catholics in the United States because the fundamentals of our morality has been clarified by Rome. The Ancient Church of Rome was persecuted until the Edict of Milan and the conversion of the emperor. At that point the Christians of Rome were able to enter into the Church on the Lateran Hill and worship in peace and joy in the Lords house. How wonderful it must have been to be able to come to a holy place and worship together. Nagkakaroon naman ng kagaanan ang dibdib lalo kung mayroong nakikinig. Isang tunay na kaibigang maituturing na handang dumamay sa lahat ng dalahin. Matiyagang inuunawa ang kahinaan, bagkus ay nagpapalakasan sa isat isa. Dahil sa palagiang pag-uusap ay lalong napapatibay ang pagiging malapit ng isang magkakaibigan. Kung sa magkakaibigan ay nakikipaghuntahan tayo, ang pananalangin ay paraan ng pakikipag-ugnayan natin sa Diyos. Nais ng Diyos na tayong lahat ay manalangin. Si Jesus mismo ay nanalangin. Sa pamamagitan ng kanyang pananalangin ay nagkakaroon kababalaghang pangyayari katulad noong siya ay binyagan sa Ilog Jordan na kung saan ay nabuksan ang kalangitan. Nadaig rin niya ang tukso ng diyablo at marami pang ibang pangyayari na naganap dahil sa kanyang pananalangin. Bagamat abala siya sa paglilingkod, naglalaan din siya ng panahong mamahinga at manalangin. Maging ang kanyang mga tagasunod ay tinuruan din niya ng mga bagay na ito at ibinigay ang panalangin na kng saan ay makikilala sila bilang kanyang mga disipulo (Lukas 11:1-4). Hinihikayat niya tayo na manalangin lagi at hindi dapat masiraan ng loob. Binibigyang pabuya ba natin ang Diyos kung tayo ay nananalangin? Kailangan ba ng Diyos an gating mga panalangin? By: Bevi Tamargo I have some free time today, so luckily I could rest a little and type this article. Last Tuesday was really hectic. A guy named Mike Balba called me up and said that someone was using his name at onfino.com, (the website that I am currently managing). So I had to check it out and it seems that someone was indeed using his name. He then uploaded messages to clear his name, and I proceeded to delete all the negative comments. Mike and I both thought it was really funny. And we had a good laugh about it. But I do know that some people are really taking these comments seriously. In fact, one time, May Heducos called me up and she was crying because of all the negative rumors going around about her, which were all false, of course. I felt so sorry for her. I knew she was just trying her best. And having personally known her, I would say that she is such a nice and sweet young lady. And Im proud of her for having the courage to shine and help other people. The last topics we did at Arirang (Talk Around), were celebrities and tests. Celebrities was quite boring. I am not such a fan of celebrities, to be honest, as I hardly watch TV. But I did say a little bit about Richard Gomez, Aga Muhlach, Mirriam Quiambao, And Leah Salonga. Our host, Richard Kim, knew about Leah Salonga. He said she was indeed a big star internationally. I felt a surge of pride in that. I realized then that I love it when other Filipinos are doing well internationally. It gives me a surge of pride to be Filipino. good at test taking, and others are better at practical, hands-on work. Im really happy that I dont have to take tests anymore. I remember how I used to cram for all those midterm and final exams. But its funny how society places so much emphasis on tests. When the truth is, a persons ability cannot possibly be measured by a piece of paper. I really wish that another system could be developed where instead of written tests, there could be some practical evaluation as well. I also learned that the highest form of love is the Love of God, that all things are possible with Him, that all things would fall rightly into place, that we will overcome the problems we encounter and that He is really mighty and He is worth-praising. He will never abandon us and he would always make a way for us to see his unfailing and unconditional love.

Report: Workers in S. Korea at risk
By Jerome Aning Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 08:58pm (Mla time) 10/19/2008 MANILA -- Migrant workers in South Korea, including the 80,000 overseas Filipino workers there, are prone to exploitation and abuse because the government there has failed to implement anti-discrimination laws. This was the finding of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), which recently surveyed the labor standards in South Korea. While South Korea ratified core conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO) on discrimination and equal remuneration, in practice, discrimination against women and foreign workers is both frequent and serious, said ITUC secretary-general Guy Ryder in a statement posted at the organization's website (www.ituc-csi.org). The ITUC report, released Oct. 10, said migrant workers would be arrested, detained and deported, if they would organize a union to improve their working conditions there. Despite legal avenues, migrants refrain from bringing complaints out of fear of retaliation by the employer. Complaints include the withholding of wages and excessive working hours for wages lower than what Korean workers earn in similar jobs.

He urged governments to create more opportunities for work so that families are not torn apart. He also recalled the words of Pope Benedict XVI in the address he delivered to the United Nations last April 18. "The future will be built on human rights.' We are speaking of a fundamental nucleus of values, hence of rights, but also of duties and responsibilities, including the need to promote human dignity and justice without imposing either cultural relativism or cultural imperialism, and with full acceptance of the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity," Marchetto quoted the Pope as saying. "Any form of temporary and circular migration should never be taken as a pretext for avoiding full respect of migrants' rights, and specifically their right to family reunification, their right to the recognition of their contribution to development both by their work and by means of their savings sent home. "Special attention must be given to avoid discrimination and to protect vulnerable migrants such as women, unaccompanied minors, elderly and disabled persons," Marchetto said. He first made the call at last week's 2nd Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
