The Hyehwadong Filipino Catholic Community (HFCC) is organizing a pilgrimage to Baeron Shrine on Black Saturday, April 11, 2009. The participants shall leave Seoul at 8:00 am on the said date and be back at about 4:00pm. The assembly place is Hansung University Subway Station, Exit 5, near the Police Station. Everyone is invited to participate. Please submit your names to Ms. Ely Torres (010-8061-9143) or to any Council member or Chairperson. A certain amount shall be collected for the transportation and food. The following is a description of the Shrine: Baeron is located between two rough and rugged valleys and its name, meaning shaped like the bottom of a ship comes from the shape of this location. Like Noahs Ark, this place was one of the secluded shelters deep in the mountains where early Korean Catholics hid themselves from persecution and secretly formed communities of believers.

Baeron is one of the most important shrines in Korea for three reasons: it is the place where Alexius Hwang Sa-yong wrote his Baek-so, The Silk Letter, it is the site of St. Josephs Seminary, the first seminary in Korea, and is also the burial site of Fr. Thomas Choi Yang-op, who was the second priest in Korea. Alexitus Hwang Sa-yongs Baek-so, The Silk Letter Alexius Hwang Sa-yong was one of the young leaders in the early Catholic church in Korea, escaped from persecution in 1801 (the shinyu persecution) in a dugout in Baeron. While in this dugout, he wrote an epistle on a silk scroll to Bishop Guvea of the Diocese of Peiping(now Peiking), pleading for the bishops help to rebuild the Catholic church in Korea which was devastated by religious oppression. With each line being permeated with Hwangs zealous efforts and yearnings for the evangelization of Korea, the letter records the causes of the persecutions, the lives of about thirty martyrs and the political situation in Korea. It also makes five suggestions to the Bishop for the freedom of faith in Korea. Before the letter was delivered, its messenger was apprehended and the scroll confiscated, Hwang was arrested for high treason and killed by dismemberment at the age of twenty-seven. The original Scroll was presented to Pope puis XI during the beatification of the seventy-nine Korean Catholics in 1925 and is now preserved in the Vatican Museum. The dungeon where Hwang wrote his Baekso is now restored. St. Josephs Seminary, the first in Korea. Korea. Then called Chosun, was made an apostolic vicariate in 1831, and the apostolic vicariate of Chosun was entrusted to the Paris Foreign Missions Society. No sooner had the missionaries of this society begun their work than they sent Korean seminarians to Macao or Penang to be educated.

PAGNINILAY: Kilala ang mga Kristiyano, partikular na tayong mga Katoliko, sa Tanda ng Krus. Kung ating iisipin, sa maraming pagkakataon sa loob ng isang araw, tayong mga Katoliko ay nagaantanda ng Kruspagkagising at bago matulog, bago at pagkatapos kumain, bago at pagkatapos maglakbay, bago at pagkatapos magtrabaho, bago at matapos kumuha ng pagsusulit, kapag napadaan sa Simbahan, kapag natatakot, kapag nalulungkot, kapag natutuwa, at sa napakarami pang pagkakataon. Nakapagtataka kung bakit matapos mamatay ni Jesus sa krus, ito ay sinimulan nang yakapin ng mga Kristiyano. At hindi rin nakapagtataka kung bakit marami sa ating mga hindi kapanampalataya ang nagtatanong kung ano nga bang meron ang krus ni Jesus? Bagamat hindi tuwirang binanggit sa Mabuting Balita, pinatutungkulan dito ang krus. Sinabi ni Jesus kay Nicodemo, Kung paanong itinaas ni Moises ang ahas doon sa ilang, gayon din naman, kailangang itaas ang Anak ng Tao upang ang sinumang sumasampalataya sa kanya ay magkakaroon ng buhay na walang -hanggan. Ito ang ating patuloy na pagnilayan

Noong panahon ni Moises, ang sinumang tumingin sa ahas na itinaas ay gagaling mula sa kanilang karamdaman, gayundin ang sinumang mananampalataya kay Jesus na itinaas at nakabayubay sa krus ay gagaling, partikular na ang kagalingang pangispiritwal o pangkaluluwa. Ang paghilom ng ating mga pusong sugatan ay makakamtan sa krus na niyakap ni Jesus. Oo, niyakap ni Jesus ang krus bilang tanda ng kanyang dakilang pag-ibig sa kanyang dakilang gawain na pagligtas sa sanlibutan. Nilapatan ni Jesus ng pag-ibig ang krus at ito ang nagpabago sa dating nakatatakot na kahulugan nito. Kung kayat paghilom ang dulot ng krus na pinuno ng pag-ibig ni Jesus. Sa mga makasalanan, nalulumbay, nagdurusa, nalulungkot, nababalisa, nahahapis, nanlalamig sa pananampalataya, ang pagtutok sa Krus ni Jesus ang siyang kagalingan. Ang mga dugong dumanak sa katawan ni Jesus ang siyang hihilom sa ating mga sugat. Ito ang misteryo ng Krus at ng pag-ibig ni Jesus. Doon sa Krus tayo makatatagpo ng kagalingan. Doon maghihilom ang ating mga pusong-wasak. Doon mabubuo muli ang ating mga nasirang pangarap. Doon tayo muling aasa mula sa ating pagkabigo. Doon mapapawi ang ating galit at mapapalitan ng pag-ibig. Doon ang kadiliman ay magliliwanag. Sa kabalintunaang idinulot ni Jesus, nakatagpo ng bagong kahulugan ang krus. Hindi bat napakagandang isipin na lumalapit tayo sa isang Diyos na minsan ding nasugatan? Hindi bat ang mga sugat natin at ni Jesus ang higit na nakapagbubuklod sa atin sa kanya? At ang lahat ng ito ay magaganap doon sa Krus ni Jesus!

CATHOLIC FAITH:
Last of two parts Q: What are appropriate activities for ordinary days during Lent? A: Giving up something we enjoy for Lent, doing of physical or spiritual acts of mercy for others, prayer, fasting, abstinence, going to confession, and other acts expressing repentance in general. Q: Is the custom of giving up something for Lent mandatory? A: No. However, it is a salutary custom, and parents or caretakers may choose to require it of their children to encourage their spiritual training, which is their prime responsibility in the raising of their children. Q: Since Sundays are not counted in the forty days of Lent, does the custom of giving up something apply to them? A: Customarily, no. However, since the giving up of something is voluntary to begin with, there is no official rule concerning this aspect of it. Nevertheless, since Sundays are days of celebration, it is appropriate to suspend the Lenten self-denial on them that, in a spiritual and non-excessive way, we may celebrate the day of Our Lord's resurrection so that that day and that event may be contrasted with the rest of the days of Lent and the rest of the events of history. This heightened contrast deepens the spiritual lessons taught by the rest of Lent. Q: Why is giving up something for Lent such a salutary custom? A: By denying ourselves something we enjoy, we discipline our wills so that we are not slaves to our pleasures. Just as indulging the pleasure of eating leads to physical flabbiness and, if this is great enough, an inability to perform in physically demanding situations, indulging in pleasure in general leads to spiritual flabbiness and, if this is great enough, an inability to perform in spiritual demanding situations, we when the demands of morality require us to sacrifice something pleasurable (such as sex before marriage or not within the confines of marriage) or endure hardship (such as being scorned or persecuted for the faith). By disciplining the will to refuse pleasures when they are not sinful, a habit is developed which allows the will to refuse pleasures when they are sinful. There are few better ways to keep one's priorities straight than by periodically denying ourselves things of lesser priority to show us that they are not necessary and focus our attention on what is necessary. Q: Is the denying of pleasure an end in itself? A: No. It is a only a means to an end. By training ourselves to resist temptations when they are not sinful, we train ourselves to reject temptations when they are sinful. We also express our sorrow over having failed to resist sinful temptations in the past. Q: Is there such a thing as denying ourselves too many pleasures? A: Most definitely. First, God made human life contingent on certain goods, such as food, and to refuse to enjoy enough of them has harmful consequences. For example, if we do not eat enough food it can cause physical damage or (in the extreme, even death). Just as there is a balance between eating too much

food and not eating enough food, there is a balance involved in other goods. Second, if we do not strike the right balance and deny ourselves goods God meant us to have then it can generate resentment toward God, which is a spiritual sin just as much as those of engaging in excesses of good things. Thus one can be led into sin either by excess or by defect in the enjoyment of good things. Third, it can decrease our effectiveness in ministering to others. Fourth, it can deprive us of the goods God gave us in order that we might praise him. Fifth, it constitutes the sin of ingratitude by refusing to enjoy the things God wanted us to have because he loves us. If a child refused every gift his parent gave him, it would displease the parent, and if we refuse gifts God has given us, it displeases God because he loves us and wants us to have them. Q: Is that balance the same for all people? A: No. For example, with the good of food, people who are by nature physically larger need more food than people who are physically smaller. Similarly, people who have higher metabolisms or who do manual labor for a living need more food than people with slower metabolisms or who have less active lifestyles. The same is true with regard to other goods than food. The St. Paul speaks of this in regard to the good of married life: "I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own special gift from God, one of one kind and one of another. To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well for them to remain single as I do. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to be aflame with passion" (1 Corinthians 7:7-9). Thus some are given the gift of being able to live without the good of married life in order that they may pursue greater devotion to God (1 Cor. 7:32-34) or to pursue greater ministry for others (2 Timothy 2:3-4), as with priests, monks, and nuns. God gives these people special graces to live the life which they have embraced, just as he gives special graces to the married to live the life they have embraced. Q: Aside from Ash Wednesday, which begins Lent, what are its principal events? A: There are a variety of saints' days which fall during Lent, and some of these change from year to year since the dates of Lent itself change based on when Easter falls. However, the Sundays during the Lenten season commemorate special events in the life of Our Lord, such as his Transfiguration and his Triumphal Entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, which begins Holy Week. Holy week climaxes with Holy Thursday, on which Christ celebrated the first Mass, Good Friday, on which he was Crucified, and Holy Saturday -- the last day of Lent -- during which Our Lord lay in the Tomb before his Resurrection on Easter Sunday, the first day after Lent. http://www.cin.org/users/james/files/lent.htm

Si Cathy, tatlong taong gulang at mayroong malubhang karamdaman. Kailangan niyang sumailalim sa pagsasalin ng dugo. Subalit sa kanilang pamilya, si Sebastian, ang kanyang limang taong gulang na kuya lamang ang mayroong dugo na ang tipo ay katulad ng sa kanya. Kinausap ito ng doktor at ipinaliwanag ng masinsinan ang kalagayan ng nakababata nitong kapatid. Sebastian, tanong ng doktor, mahal mo ba si Cathy? Tumugon ang bata, Opo. Matindi ang sakit ng iyong kapatid at kailangan mo siyang tulungan, paliwanag ng doktor, Kailangan siyang salinan ng dugo na nanggagaling sa iyo para gumaling siya. Bibigyan mo ba siya? Sandaling natahimik ang bata at nag-isip. Napatingin ito sa kanyang mga magulang at muling bumaling sa doktor sabay tango bilang tanda ng kanyang pagsang-ayon. Kayat kaagad na isinagawa ang pagsasalin. Makalipas ang ilang araw ay muli siyang isinama ng kanyang ama sa ospital upang dalawin si Cathy. Muli niyang nakatagpo ang doktor at nakangiting sinabi nito sa kanya, Nakatulong ng malaki ang dugo na ibinigay mo kay Cathy kaya gagaling na siya. Biglang nangilid ang luha sa mga mata ng bata. Tinanong siya ng doktor kung bakit siya umiiyak. Kailan naman ako mamamatay? ang inosenteng tanong ng bata. Dahil sa dugong kinuha sa kanya ay buong akala niyang mamamatay na rin siya.Ganunpaman, hindi niya ito ipinagkait para sa kanyang kapatid. Gayon na lamang ang pag-ibig ng Diyos sa sanlibutan, kaya ibinigay niya ang kanyang bugtong na Anak, upang ang sumampalataya sa kanya ay hindi mapahamak, kundi magkaroon ng buhay na walang hanggan.(Juan 3:16) Maaaring hindi madali ang magkaroon ng pananampalataya. Lalo pat sa mundong ito na pinaghaharian ng ibat ibang uri ng kaguluhan, samot saring kalamidad at mga sakit. Ang pananampalataya ay isang biyaya. Bago makamtan ito ay kailangang dumaan muna sa tamang proseso. Kadalasan, masakit ang paraang daranasin ng sinumang nagnanais na magkamit nito. Maging sa sandali ng ating pag-iral bilang tao, ang sakit ay kakambal na ng pagtubo, pagbunga, pagsilang at pagbabago. Kaya ngat maliwanag at masasabi nating Ang pinakamagandang biyaya ng Diyos ay kadalasang nababalot ng sakit. Gaano kasakit sa isang Ama ang ibigay upang patayin ang kanyang kaisa-isang Anak? Tumanggi ba ang Anak na ibigay ang kanyang buhay para sa katubusan ng lahat? Si Jesus bilang tao ay maaari rin naman sana siyang makaiwas upang hindi sapitin ang pagpapakasakit. Tayo din, bilang tao, maging ng hayop ay nasa kalikasan natin na mapanatili ang buhay sa pamamagitan ng pag-iwas sa anumang nakakasakit. At ang kalikasang ito ay sadyang nananalaytay sa anumang nilikha. Ngunit alam mo ba na anuman ang ating nararamdaman o nararanasan ay mainam itong pagkahunan ng pagninilay. Dapat nating malaman na tayo lamang mga tao ang may kakayahang pagnilayan at lampasan ang kadalasang iniiwasan ng lahat. Subalit hindi si Jesus, dahil hindi niya ninais na umiwas sa itinakda sa kanya ng Ama para maganap ang lahat. Naparito siya upang magbigay ng liwanag bagamat marami pa rin ang nais manatili sa kadiliman. Ngunit marami rin ng di hamak ang gustong mabuhay sa katotohanan at sa liwanag. Tiyak na hindi makikita ang sikat ng araw sa gitna ng bagyo. Ngunit hindi mahirap paniwalaang sa likod ng madilim na ulap ay nandoroon pa rin ang araw. Tila napakahirap ding paniwalaang nanatili ang pag-ibig ng Diyos maging sa gitna ng ating pagtitiis. Sa pamamagitan ng sinag na nagmumula sa Kanyang dakilang pag-ibig, kaya nating iwasan ang anino ng pagiging makasarili. Hindi nagatubiling ialay ng Panginoon ang kanyang buhay, para sa kanyang mga kaibigan, para sa kanyang mga minamahal. Katulad ni Sebastian, bagamat musmos, maging sa kanyang paniniwalang siya ay mamamatay. Sa pamamagitan ng Sinag ng Pag-ibig ng Diyos, ngayon, ang kaginhawahan at kasiyahan ay ipinagbubunyi habang ang sakit ay pinapawi.

Seong-rye was also a martyr. With Kim Dae-geon (later the first Korean priest, also martyred and canonized) and choi Pang-jae (who died before ordination), young Choi Yang-op at sixteen (1836) went to Macao to get his seminary education. In 1849 he was an ordained priest and came back to Korea the same year. For the next twelve years Fr. Choi took care of more than four thousand believers in over a hundred Catholic communities which were scattered around Korea. While ministering to his congregations Fr. Choi translated catechism books in Chinese into Korean, and adapted the doctrine and instruction of the catholic faith into traditional Korean verse forms to make it easier for lay people to understand and remember.
